Let It Snow Wall Hanging

This eye-catching wall hanging features two of the best things about winter: snowmen and snowflakes! The snowman is an "on the edge" design; the snowflakes are a mixture of classic embroidery and freestanding lace.

Project Needs & Notes

- 1/2 yard flannel for front - 1/2 yard print cotton for borders and back - 14" x 18" piece of double-sided stiff interfacing - Medium weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer - Temporary spray adhesive (like Gunold KK100) - 1/8" wide ribbon - Two small metal or plastic rings for hangers - Needle and thread for some hand sewing - Fabric glue

For this tutorial, I used the medium size of the Peeking Snowman. Some snowflakes are embroidered onto the fabric, and those are the large sizes of the Snowflake Simplicity 2 design, Snowflake Simplicity 3 design, and Snowflake Simplicity 4 design.

Freestanding lace snowflakes are also included in the tutorial. A mixture of small and medium sizes of the Light & Lacy Snowflakes (Lace) Design Packs were used. For instructions on how to embroider the lace snowflakes, reference the freestanding lace tutorial here.

Finished size: 14" x 23 1/2"

This project was featured in the following: Crafty Christmas Trunk Show Video

Begin by preparing the fabric for the front of the wall hanging.

Use an air-erase pen to draw a 12" x 14" rectangle on the flannel. Leave at least 1" of excess fabric around the shape.

Measure and make marks 1/2" up along each side edge starting at the bottom corners. Draw a line connecting the marks. This is where the snowman will be positioned to "peek" from the bottom of the wall hanging.

Print a template of the snowman design from embroidery software and trim the template, cutting right along the bottom edge of the design. Cut around the side and top, leaving about 1" of excess around the design.

If you do not have embroidery software that makes templates, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program to use. Place the template along the line you drew on the fabric.

Center the template side to side. Mark the center point, as well as the vertical and horizontal axis points.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks.

Spray the cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive. Smooth the flannel on top.

Hoop the flannel and stabilizer together, aligning the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric.

Embroider the design.

After embroidering, remove the flannel from the hoop and trim

the stabilizer away from the back.

Next, print templates of the snowflake designs. Arrange them in the rectangle where you'd like to stitch them. Leave at least 1" of space between the edges of the designs and the edges of the rectangle. In this example, space is left to add the lace snowflakes later.

Mark the center points and axis lines for each of the embroidered snowflakes.

Hoop the fabric with cutaway stabilizer and embroider the snowflakes.

After the snowflakes are embroidered, trim the excess stabilizer away from the back after stitching.

Cut out the rectangle shape.

To make the side borders, cut two pieces of the print cotton fabric to 2 1/2" x by 14".

Align the fabric pieces, right sides together, on top of the embroidered front piece.

Align the fabric pieces with the side edges of the front piece. Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the outer side edges only.

Press the back seams open with an iron.

To prepare the top and bottom border pieces, cut two pieces of fabric to 15" x 2 1/2".

Align the fabric pieces, right sides together, along the top and bottom edges of the assembled front/side border piece.

Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the top edge.

Then, sew a 1/2" seam along the bottom edge, sewing with the back side facing up.

Sew the seam right along the bottom edge of the design, which is 1/2" from the bottom edge of the fabric. Press the seams.

To prepare the back piece, lay the assembled front piece on top of the fabric, right sides together, pin in place, and cut around the shape.

Then, sew a 1/2" seam along the side and top edges only. Leave the bottom open for turning.

Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams.

Cut a piece of double-sided fusible stiff interfacing to 13 1/2" x 15" and insert it inside the fabric.

Turn the fabric of the opening in 1/2" to the wrong side and press.

Add the lace snowflakes. Loop ribbon through the tops of the snowflakes and tie a knot.

Trim the end of the ribbon allowing about 1" of excess at the bottom fold of the fabric.

Tuck the open end of the ribbon in between the fabric and pin in place.

Then, top stitch a 1/8" seam along the entire outer edge of the wall hanging to secure the snowflakes in place.

If you like, you can add lace snowflakes to the upper portion as well. Attach with fabric glue.

To add hangers, hand-sew the loops to the back of the wall hanging. Position the loops 1" down from the top, and 1" in from the side edges.

The snowflakes in this wall hanging give it an especially wintery feel.

The freestanding lace pops out of the piece, and hang down from ribbons to mimic snow falling.
