What is an entrepreneur?

• A person who starts his or her own business in the hope of earning a profit.

What is a social entrepreneur?

• A person who sees a need in a society or community and provides a business to address this need, using his or her entrepreneurial skills and sound business practices.

• The main focus is the social cause not profit but he/she must at least break even.

A Story of a Social Entrepreneur

Sabriye Tenberken is a young blind woman from Germany who became fascinated with a distant country named Nepal.

She studied Nepal while in college and visited after graduation in 1997. She soon discovered that many blind people there had difficulty obtaining an education and other opportunities.

Sabriye became committed to helping, and she established the country's first school for the blind in 1998.

• By filling a need that holds significance for them, entrepreneurs can turn their enthusiasm into a business.

• It is their love for the product or service, and their pleasure in filling a need, that drives most entrepreneurs.

• Each team will receive background information to develop a workable

business plan. A list of questions will be provided as a guide.

• Teams will be judged based on:

Innovation and creativity.

How well their solution meets their customers' needs.

How well their ideas reflect a knowledge and understanding of their

new business.

Whether or not the business has a long-term plan.

Project Manager: Responsible for keeping the team on task.

Team Designer: Responsible for visualizing the business plan.

Team Spokesperson: Responsible for presenting the plan.

Quality Lead: Responsible for ensuring that the plan clearly addresses the

need, as the team brainstorms, plans, and presents.

•Review your card together and decide what available resources you have.

•The business that the you are creating today are going to be competing for $1

million in start-up funding! The better the idea, the more money the new business

will receive.

• In your own words, describe the urgent need you've identified.

• Describe your "big idea" to meet this need.

• Explain how your plan will benefit customers and why they will use your

product or service.

• Assuming you obtain start-up funding, describe how you will manage it.

Group One Business Challenge

It is estimated that over 300 million children around the world do not have access to education and most likely will never learn to read or write. These children, especially in developing countries in Asia and Africa do not have a reasonable chance of rising out of poverty given their situation.

Your business challenge is to develop a sustainable solution that will provide these children with an opportunity to access the life-long gift of education.

One valuable resource that you can tap on is the enthusiasm and willingness of the local people in rural villages who can help provide labour, land or materials.

In many countries in the world, there is a great social divide between rich people living in the cities and the poor in rural areas. The rich city people often discard clothes and household items they no longer need or want resulting in huge amounts of waste.

Your business challenge is to find a way to recycle or convert the waste material into a resource for rural development.

How can you create a civic participation movement in which ordinary people are given the opportunity to play a part?

Group Three Business Challenge

Around the world, many families have difficulties saving enough money to buy a home. Their dream of owning a home never comes true because they must spend their income on rent and other essentials. In areas that have been affected by natural disasters (like hurricanes, tsunamis, and tornadoes), there often are no houses available for purchase.

Your business challenge is to find a way to help people obtain affordable, well-built houses.

Remember, it takes many different skills and a lot of material resources to build a house, and there are probably many people (including the new homeowners) who would be willing to help.

Group Four Business Challenge

Many children dealing with a serious illness or injury have urgent needs. Often, these kids require expensive mobility equipment (such as special wheelchairs, scooters, exercise equipment, and ramps). To keep up their spirits and help them heal as quickly as possible, they also need conversations and laughter with friends, and the knowledge they are not alone. Many healthy individuals would like to help these sick kids.

Your business challenge is to organize a venture that will put people’s good intentions to work for this compelling cause.

Room to Read

John Wood founded the non-profit Room To Read in 2000 after a trekking holiday in Nepal which changed his life. He visited a local school and was shocked by the poverty and lack of educational resources. John decided to quit his senior executive position with Microsoft and dedicate his life to eliminate world poverty through the power of education.

From a simple email request in 1998 to friends to donate used books, John has built a global organization with over 7,500 libraries, 6 million donated or published books, more than 830 schools and over 8,800 long-term scholarships for girls in developing countries in Asia and Africa.

Group Two Business Challenge – REAL BUSINESS

Goonj

Anshu Gupta is the founder of Goonj which means “life echo” in Hindi. It is a New Delhi-based social enterprise that recycles clothes and other basic necessities for India’s poor. Rich people in the cities discard clothes and things they no longer want, creating a glut of urban waste which Anshu Gupta uses to bridge poverty and plenty.

Goonj keeps costs low with a system of collection centres, volunteers and partners (which includes the Indian army, a radio station, grassroots groups and schools). It operates in 21 of 28 states in India and collects 30,000 kgs of material every month for the poverty-stricken who form 35% of India’s one billion people.

Habitat for Humanity

Founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International has built and restored more than 150,000 homes. The idea for Habitat came from Koinonia Farm, a small diverse Christian farming community in Georgia, founded by Clarence Jordan. Inspired by the Koinonia model, the Fullers and Jordan developed the concept of “partnership housing”, in which those in need of homes work with volunteers to help build their own houses.

Churches, community groups, and other volunteers work side by side with home owners to build affordable, decent housing. Habitat for Humanity has built more than 175,000 houses in more than 3,000 communities worldwide.

Kids Helping Kids

In 1997, a year after diagnosed with a brain tumor, Mischa Zimmerman established Kids Helping Kids (KHK), a non-profit volunteer organization run by teens to benefit teens and children affected by catastrophic illness or injury.

KHK provides support with peer interaction, mobility equipment, and special wishes, while also raising awareness of the changes that these individuals and their families will face.

The teens who participate in KHK often help with event and activity planning, learning the value of contributing their time and developing a profound sense of commitment to something larger than themselves.
