foreverything.Unfortunatelythatisnotthereality.Accordingtothe
DistrictofMission,itisestimatedthateachpersonusesapproximate-
ly600litresperpersonperday.Thisamountisover100litresabove
theCanadianaverage.Waterconservationiseveryone’sresponsibil-
ity,sohereareafewtips:
• Makesuredrippingwatertapsarelookedafter.Fixingadrip-
pingtapcansaveupto300litresofwaterperweek.
• Usealow-=lowshowerhead.
• Handwaterplantsinyourgardenratherthanusingasprinkler.
• Waterintheearlymorningtoreduceevaporationortheburning
oftheplantsfromthesun.Theaveragegardenhosepoursout20
litresaminute.Notonlywillyoubeconservingwaterbutyou
willbegettingsomeexercise!
Aswatersuppliesdiminishduringthesummerwithmorepeople
washingcars,=illingswimmingpoolsorwateringlawns,itisupto
eachofustodowhatwecan.
Pleasemakesuretodumpanystandingwaterfromyourpropertyto
controlourmosquitopopulation.Generallymosquitoesaremoreac-
tiveinthedawnandduskhours.Changebirdbathsoranimalwater-

Wild berry season is here; ripen �me depends on the loca�on. Berries are most o�en in moist areas near
lakes and rivers. Remember to leave some for the wildlife and keep an eye out for bears as they love juicy
berries as well.
The following is a list of wild berries and �mes that they normally grow in:
Salmonberry – Begins around May to late July.
Elderberry – June to July (elderberries cannot be eaten raw, as they may cause nausea)
Huckleberry; Wild Blueberry – begins June for red huckleberry, and late July or early August through to Sep-
tember for blueberry.
Thimbleberry – Beginning of July
Blackcap Raspberry – Mid to late July through to September

BC Raspberry Cake
1/3 Cup Margarine
1 Cup Sugar
1 Egg
1 tsp. Vanilla
2 Cups Flour
3 tsp. Baking Powder
¼ tsp. Salt
1 Cup Milk
2 Cups Raspberries
Cream margarine and sugar, add well beat-
en egg and vanilla, add dry ingredients with
milk, beat just enough to keep ba5er
smooth. Pour into a greased floured pan.
Sprinkle raspberries on top. Bake at 375 de-
grees for 30-40 minutes. Frost with vanilla
BC Raspberry Salad Dressing
¼ cup BC Raspberries
Your Choice of Le5uce
¼ Cup Vinegar
¼ Cup Yogurt
½ Cup Croutons
1 Garlic Clove
1 tsp. Lemon Juice
1 tsp. Sugar
1 tsp. Thyme
Crush garlic and raspberries. Add rest of in-
gredients. Clean & tear your desired choice
of le5uce. Add croutons and dressing & mix
well. Top with fresh raspberries, if desired.

herwhenandwhereIcan,shewillbecompletingthesurveybytheendofJuly2009.Wehavealistof
alternateswhenamemberchoosesnottotakepart.Somepeoplejustdon’twishtotakepart,thisis
completelyunderstandable.Abigthankyouisextendedtothosememberswhohavedoneinterviews

field trips.

Call for Volunteers Leq’a:mel First Nation is currently looking for volunteers to assist with the planning and preparation for our: • Annual Student Appreciation Day • Ancestral Walk to honour our Ancestors • And for our Drug Rally events We are compiling a list of volunteers for each event. We will be having a Food Safe Level 1 workshop coming up later this month for Leq’a:mel First Nation.
