Monthly Newsletter February 2017 Issue 7 Greetings Greyhound Nation, Inspiring and exciting things are continuing to take place at Lincoln Park Academy. Official graduation rates were released by the DOE and I am proud to announce LPA led the entire Treasure Coast with the highest graduation rate, 96.7% for the 2015-2016 school year. Although we dipped by almost 2 percentage points from last year’s rate, congratulations are still in order to the entire Greyhound family! We could not have been at the top of the list had it not been for the outstanding dedication and hard work of our students and the unwavering support of all our stakeholders. During the past month, our Staffulty and students have participated in many learning experiences. LPA Staffulty participated in “Kids at Hope” training, a framework designed to engage entire communities to support success for “ALL” children. Our Staffulty members have now been transformed into “Treasure Hunters,” committed to search for all the talents, skills and intelligence that exists in all children and youth, with the belief that all children are capable of success. Our students were also busy, many of them participating in Science Fair, History Fair and Project Citizen. We are proud of all our students who participated in these events and were selected to advance to the next level. Congratulations and good luck! We also supported this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative activities, to include the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade. Students in grades 6 through 10 completed their third-round of essay writing in preparation for the upcoming FSA ELA Writing component and our IB seniors completed their long-anticipated English orals. Way to go Greyhounds! I am also proud to announce Ms. Makeda-Ione F. Brome has been selected as one of the three “Teacher of the Year” finalists for St. Lucie Public Schools. Ms. Brome's selection reflects her commitment to creating an environment that is conducive to learning for all students. It is also a true testament of her hard work and dedication, not only as a classroom teacher, but as a teacher leader. We are confident she will represent herself and Lincoln Park Academy in true Greyhound fashion. Finally, as we move closer toward the busiest time of the school year, I want to take the time to remind everyone of our commitment to our theme and mission… “One School; One Team; One Theme.” As one school and one team, we ensure that all our students graduate from our safe and caring school equipped with the knowledge, academic skills and the desire to succeed as life-long learners and positive contributors to our diverse society. As one school and one team, we work toward meeting our goals and completing our mission together with the support of our parents and partners. As one school and one team, we are committed to search for all the talents, skills and intelligence that exist in all children and youth. We believe that all children are capable of success… no exceptions!” One School; One Team; One Theme” Sincerely, HENRY SANABRIA Principal & Treasure Hunter

Greetings Greyhound Nation, Inspiring and exciting things are continuing to take place at Lincoln Park Academy. Official graduation rates were released by the DOE and I am proud to

announce LPA led the entire Treasure Coast with the highest graduation rate, 96.7% for the 2015-2016 school year. Although we dipped by almost 2

percentage points from last year’s rate, congratulations are still in order to the entire Greyhound family! We could not have been at the top of the list had it

not been for the outstanding dedication and hard work of our students and the unwavering support of all our stakeholders.

During the past month, our Staffulty and students have participated in many learning experiences. LPA Staffulty participated in “Kids at Hope” training, a

framework designed to engage entire communities to support success for “ALL” children. Our Staffulty members have now been transformed into “Treasure

Hunters,” committed to search for all the talents, skills and intelligence that exists in all children and youth, with the belief that all children are capable of

success. Our students were also busy, many of them participating in Science Fair, History Fair and Project Citizen. We are proud of all our students who

participated in these events and were selected to advance to the next level. Congratulations and good luck! We also supported this year’s Martin Luther

King Jr. Commemorative activities, to include the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade. Students in grades 6 through 10 completed their third-round of essay

writing in preparation for the upcoming FSA ELA Writing component and our IB seniors completed their long-anticipated English orals. Way to go

Greyhounds!

I am also proud to announce Ms. Makeda-Ione F. Brome has been selected as one of the three “Teacher of the Year” finalists for St. Lucie Public Schools. Ms.

Brome's selection reflects her commitment to creating an environment that is conducive to learning for all students. It is also a true testament of her hard

work and dedication, not only as a classroom teacher, but as a teacher leader. We are confident she will represent herself and Lincoln Park Academy in true

Greyhound fashion.

Finally, as we move closer toward the busiest time of the school year, I want to take the time to remind everyone of our commitment to our theme and

mission… “One School; One Team; One Theme.” As one school and one team, we ensure that all our students graduate from our safe and caring school

Congratulations to our IB seniors for the outstanding job they did on the English orals. The students were excited and well prepared to present their very best. This is the first phase of multiple assessments that seniors will complete for grading by the IB from February through April. The completion of each major assignment creates another reason to celebrate success! Parents and students, please be mindful of the upcoming major assignments for February. Juniors will be working on English oral presentations throughout the month. Seniors have several major assignments due including TOK presentations throughout February and March. Additional important due dates for seniors include:

* TOK Paper 2/10

* French/Spanish Written Assignment 2/14

* History Internal Assessment 2/21

* Theatre Collaborative Project 2/22

Our MYP students have also been busy with various major assignments including; Black History, Career Projects, History Fair, and Project Citizen. Our Project Citizen winners will be traveling to Tallahassee to present their projects at the state level. It is inspiring to see students who are proud to take ownership of the excellent work they have created. The consistent parental support our students receive at home clearly contributes to our LPA tradition of excellence.

My final update involves academic honesty. The expectation at LPA is that students fully acknowledge the work and ideas of others. Students, remember to cite your sources so that full credit will be awarded for the work you have produced.

From the Clinic

Attention Parents of 6th grade students: As the first half of the school year begins to wind down I would like to remind you that all sixth (6th) graders must receive a TDap immunization before entering 7th grade. Spring break is a great time to stop by your Pediatrician, Health Department or local walk in clinic to have your shots updated! Please make sure you obtain the 680 state form and return it to the school clinic. If you have any additional questions please contact Ms.Fishbein at 468-5479 or email [email protected] Stay Healthy!

From the SAC

The School Advisory Council will be accepting nominations for the SAC Board at the March 23, 2017 meeting. You may submit your nominations at the February 16, 2017 meeting.

All parents are invited to vote for the election of board members at the April 20, 2017 meeting.

Seniors, hopefully by this time you have completed your applications for the Bright Futures Scholarship, which can be found at http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org and the FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov). Seniors, please continue to seek scholarships. The Education Foundation Scholarship Guide (www.educationfoundationstlucie.org) as well as Naviance (https://connection.naviance.com/lpa) list a number of applications which are mostly due in February and March.

Seniors make sure you are turning in all “Letters of Acceptance” to Mrs. Salvador, Guidance Clerk, whether you are planning to attend that school or not and all scholarship award letters to Mr. Gray, Senior Sponsor, Room 251.

We will soon begin the registration process for the 2017-18 school year. Students, please begin discussing classes with teachers and parents. Please note that some programs, such as Band and Chorus classes require teacher recommendations.

Students who are planning to take Dual Enrollment classes for the 2017-18 school year, will need to have PERT scores recorded before placement or registration of classes can occur. Indian River State College enrollment window opens March 30. Students will need to score 106 in Reading, 103 in Writing and 114 in Math on the PERT. March 30th registration is for Summer and Fall classes.

Students who failed required class(es) for semester 1 will need to register to retake the class on Florida Virtual School (www.flvs.net), or at Indian River State College Adult High School. Seniors and eighth graders need to make sure they understand the deadlines for completion in order to graduate on time. Seniors whose grade point averages have dropped below a 2.0 will also need to enroll.

All 11th graders will take the SAT on campus, free of charge, on Wednesday, March 1. All students will need to be present for this first time school day administration. Students who qualify for the fee waiver can gain access to College Board services to help them apply to college. These services include: four additional free SAT score reports to be used at any time during high school, four college application fee waivers to apply to colleges and universities participating in the fee-waiver service and students can access the Student Answer Service (SAS), which provides answers and level of difficulty for SAT questions.

Drivers Education News

Unfortunately, the funding for Drivers Ed was cut back beginning in 2017. Therefore, there is only one more Driver’s Ed class for this school year and it begins April 6th and goes through May 18th. As always, this is first come, first serve so you need to sign

up NOW if you would like your son/daughter to take the class.

Through A Treasure Coast Driving School your child receives attention and help with confusing on the road questions; they get on

the road instruction specifically geared to make them a cautious and safe driver; and they are taught by teachers that have a heart to see your child excel and be the best driver they can be.

Remember, most insurance companies will give a discount for students who have taken our drivers ed course and a discount will definitely help when its time for your son/daughter to get their drivers license!!!

As we enter celebrate the month of February, make sure that you show your LPA pride by doing right because it’s right to do right. At LPA we:

Love to meet Expectations

LPA expectations: PROMPT, PREPARED, PRODUCTIVE, and PRACTICING RESPECT. In addition, please be reminded of high academic achievement, dress code (collared shirt, belt, tucked in all the way around so belt is visible).

Love to be on time

Ensure that you are arrive at school and to class in a timely manner. To be early is to be on time, and to be on time is to be late.

Love to drive to school

As a reminder, park only in your assigned space and follow all school-wide expectations. If you have any concerns, contact the dean's office.

Love to be in Dress Code

Dress Codes are an important part of the climate of schools. Our goal is to always provide an environment that is free of distractions, safe, orderly and conducive to learning. Compliance is key! Collared shirt, tucked-in all the way around, belt visible. Pants should not have any rips, tears, or holes. Logos must be pocket-sized.

Love Bus Riders

Arrival - Before exiting the bus, make sure all electronic devices (includes but is not limited to cell phones, tablets, blue tooth, headphones, and earbuds) are turned off and put in book bags and you are in dress code (collared shirt, belt, tucked in all the way around so belt is visible). Please use the sidewalk; walking through the parking lot is prohibited.

Love Dismissal

Once the dismissal bell rings, students are expected to immediately report to the bus area, check the list and board their assigned bus. If bus number is not on the list, move to the front of the bus loading ramp to await the second bus wave. A "final call" for wave one buses will serve as a warning for departure. Once buses are moving, step back from the safety rails and DO NOT WALK between buses.

We are eager to work together with our families to make the best learning environment possible for our students.

LPA, All the Way!

From the Dean’s Office
