The Academic Procession herald s Convocation.the most significant gathering of the univer sity community.
On the first day of Convocation the Academic Procession wi ll enter the hallat ten o'cloc k in the morni ng. at three o'c lock in the afternoon and at seven- thirty in the even ing.
On the seco nd and third days of Convocation the Process ion wi ll enterthehallat ten o'clock in the morni ng and at three o'clock in the afternoo n.
The audience is requested to stand while the Procession enters and leaves the hall,during the anthems. and at other times as noted in the Proceedings.

David George l'ittDavidPitt.professoremerillisofEnglishatMemorialUniversitysince 1983, is a distinguished author and editor who has written extensively on the historyoftheMethodist Church in Newfoundland . As well. he has edited , with introductions, anumber of textbooks covering Shakespeare and other English classics.
Dr. Pitt is the pres ident of the St. John 's branch of the Humanities Association of Canada and a founding memberof the Associa tion of Canadian University Teachers of English, establishedin 1957.
He holds a doctor of laws honoris causa from Mount Allison University, a medal for Canadian Biography from the

The academic dress for matriculated undergraduates of the University shall be similar to the Scholar'sgown of the University of Oxford. It shall be worn whenever the President so directs.
The gowns of the Bachelors shall be of black stuff. The gowns of the Masters shall be of black stuff or silk.The gowns of the Doctors shall be of fine scarlet cloth or silk, or of black stuff or silk.
The pattern of the Bachelor 's gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Bachelor's gown. The pattern ofthe Master's gown and the Doctor's black gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Master's gown,except that the Doctor's gown shall have an edging of black silk braid at the opening of the sleeve. TheDoctor's scarlet gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Doctor of Divinity's gown.
The hoods of the Bachelors shall be made of black stuff,thehoodsof the Masters of black silk, and thehoods of the Doctors of scarlet silk. They shall be full in shape and lined with the university colours ofclaret and white. The hoods of the Bachelors shall be trimmed with white fur, the tippets with velvet in thecolours distinctive of the Faculty or Degree. The hoods and tippetsofthe Masters shall be edged with velvet in the colours distinctive of the Faculty or Degree. The hoods and tippets of the Doctors shall be edgedwith silk in the colours distinctive of the Faculty or Degree; however, the hood of the Doctor of Philosophyshall be of claret silk, lined and edged with claret silk.
The distinctive colours for the degrees shall be:
The caps of Bachelors and Masters shall be black and of the square shape, with black tassel. The caps ofthe Doctors shall be similar to the Oxford Doctor's bonnet.
