ACADEMIC DRESS

The academic dress for matriculated undergraduates of the University shall be similar to th e Scholar 'sGown of the University of Oxford . It shall be worn whenever the President so directs .

The gowns of the Bachelors shall be of black stuff . The gowns of the Masters shall be of black stuff orsilk . The gowns of the Doctors shall be of fine scarlet cloth or silk . or black stuff or silk.

The pattern of the Bachelor 's gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Bachelor 's gown . The patternof the Master 's gown and of the Doctor 's black gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Master 'sgown, except that the Doctor's gown shall have an edging of black silk braid at the opening of the sleeve.The Doctor's scarlet gown shall be similar to that of the Oxford Doctor of Divinity's gown .

The hoods of the Bachelors shall be made of black stuff , the hoods of Masters of black silk. and thehoods of Doctors of scarlet silk. They shall be full in shape and lined with the University colours ofclaret and white . The hoods of the Bachelors shall be edged with white fur. the tippets with velvet inthe colours distinctive of the Faculty or Degree . The hoods and tippets of the Masters shall be edgedwith velvet in the colours distinctive of the Faculty or Degree . The hoods and tippets of the Doctorsshall be edged with silk in the colours distinctive of the Faculty or Degree . However , the hood of theDoctor of Philosophy degree shall be of claret silk , lined and edged with claret silk.

The distinctive colours for the various degrees shall be :

The caps of men undergraduates, Bachelors and Masters , shall be black and of the square shape , witha black tassel. The caps of Doctors shall be similar to the Oxford Doctor 's bonnet. The caps of thewomen undergraduates, Bachelors and Masters , shall be similar to the Oxford women 's caps .

The academic dress for Officers of the Universiry shall be as follows :

Chancellor - a silk gown heavily embroidered with gold braid .Vice-chancellor - a silk gown embroidered with gold braid .Pro vice-chancellor - a silk gown embroidered with gold braid .Registrar and other Officers of the University - gowns of a pattern approved by the Senate .

Cyril Francis Poole

As principal of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook from 1977 until his retirement in 1990, Dr.Cyril Poole guided the college during a key period of development and growth. Recently he has servedas editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, overseeing the completion of thismajor work .

Born and educated on Pilley's Island , Dr. Poole earned first class honors and was a gold medallist inphilosophy at Dalhousie University in 1953. At the University of Toronto he received a master's degreein 1954 and his doctorate in 1957. He headed the philosophy departments of both Bishop 's Universityand Mount Allison University , and while at Mount Allison he also served as dean of arts and science ,and vice-president (academic).

In the public arena , Dr. Poole chaired the Royal Commission on Forest Protection and Management([980-81) and the Provincial Task Force on Education ([983 -84), and also served as a commissioner onthe Newfoundland Human Rights Commission ([982-85 ),

He has written for both scholarly and general audiences. In 1984 Dr. Poole received the first Ted RussellAward for Humor from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. He was made a member of theOrder of Canada in 1991.
