Peter Gardner is the general and artistie director of the Newfound landSymphony Orchestra (NSO) . Mr. Gardner eomple ted his formal trainingasavio!inistatTrinityCollege, London, under noted violinist Nieho!asRoth. a student of the great Hungarian teaeherJcno Il ubay. He workedexten sivclyinEnglandandWales asafrcclaneeperformerandtcacherbefore coming to Newfoundland in 1971 as the resident artist andconcertmaster of the SI. John's Symphon y Orch estra (now the NSO).

During the past 30 years he has been instrumental in the development ofmany NSO activities including the NSO Sinfonia , the Philharmonic Choir,the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Choir. the NSO Hibernia Gala and.mos t recently, the NSO Light Orche stra. He founded , and was lor anumber of years the first violinist of. the Atlantic String Quartet. Mr.

Gardner is the founding director of the Newfound land Symphony Youth Orc hestra and at various times hasheld the posi tions of vice-presiden t, executive director and festival director of the Canadian Associa tion ofYouth Orchestras . He is the executive direc tor of the Banff International String Quartet Competition and theassociate director of the Music and Sound Summer Program at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta . He isalso the executive dircctorofFestival 500 -Sharingthe Voices, a highly suecessful biennial internationalchoral festival held in Newfoundland .

Ian Rusted was born in Upper Island Cove , Newfoundland . Followinghigh schoo l years inCarboncarand St. John's, he spent two years atMemorial University College (1938-40) , followed by three years at TrinityCollege , University of Toronto . He received a bachelor of arts degree in1943. At Dalhousie University in Halifax he comple ted the MD, CMprogram and a rotatingintemship in 1948, followed bya master of sciencedegree from McGill University in 1949, with researeh support from aNational Research Council. The award of a Fellowship in Medicine fromthe Mayo Foundation led to additional postgraduate experience at theMayo Clinic . However, two summers spent on the ewfoundlandgovemmentcoastalboatS.5.KylealongtheeoastofLabrador, aswellashis childhood years in Newfoundland, led him to choose to return to whathad by then bccomethe province of Newfoundland .
