JOIN US ON A JOURNEY THROUGH GOD’S WORD

So the month of May is BUSY! Mother’s Day, Graduation, Memorial Day—we have lots to do. And between all of these important dates, our journey through “The Story” will be covering chapters 17-21, which covers the Southern Kingdom of Judah’s captivity in Babylon and their return from the Persian king who liberated Judah from their Babylonian captivity. The Babylonian captivity found God’s peo-ple living in a land that was not their own among a people that were not their own. What a low point in the life of the nation of Judah. However, their hope and their light at the end of the tunnel was the promise from God that they would one day return to their homeland. God has always been faithful.

But in many ways we can identify with Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and even the rest of people of Ju-dah. No, we may not have endured victory in a lion’s den, or come out unscathed from a fiery furnace, but certainly we can identify with these heroes of the Old Testament when we have been tempted to bow to the idols of today’s culture, or escaped the grasp of Satan's traps. 1 Peter 2:11 says, “Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.” In other words, as believers in Jesus Christ, we live our time here on earth as aliens and strangers in a world that is not our own. While we are commissioned to seek and save the lost, we are to spread the love of Christ to all those we meet, but we should never “settle” in this world as a place of permanent residence. God has in mind an eternity in heaven that awaits those who believe in His Son, Jesus. So we live, and we share Jesus, but we do so as if we are not from here and will soon return home. In that way we ARE like the people of Judah. We are living in captivity, believing in the promise of God that we will one day live in our “new” Jerusalem. And in the mean time, we share the love of Christ with those around us. Jesus said that the world will know that we are Christians by the way we LOVE one another. The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians that even though the miraculous gifts would one day all pass away, and that the body of Christ, the church, is made up of believers with all kinds of gifts and abilities, the GREATEST gift we could share, the one above ALL others, the one that would NEVER pass away, is LOVE. We often read and recite 1 Corinthians 13 (Love is patient, love is kind…) at weddings. And while those words might be inspiring for a husband and wife at the outset of their union together be-fore God, they are really words for every believer and follower of Jesus Christ. All of those attributes of LOVE that we think of in such “gushy” ways for a husband and wife, they are the attributes of LOVE we should not only have for one another, but is also the kind of love we are called to share with a world around us. So, no matter what we may do as a church that is good, and no matter what we may TRY to do as a church but fail, the ONE thing—the GREATEST thing—we can do, is LOVE. We are SO much better at that now than we were a year ago, but we can be even that much better a year from now. So in the words of some unknown anonymous cliché from the ‘90’s, “I love you man!” In His Service, Allen G.

INVEST YOUR HEART

Bruce Lee was known as the greatest martial artists of the modern age. He created his own style of Kung Fu called Jeet Kune Do, an open and flowing form of fighting. He was known for his “2 inch punch”. He could place his fist two inches from a board and break it in half with one punch. He defied Chinese tradition by teaching Kung Fu to anyone who wanted to learn. He was consid-ered by many to be unbeatable. Chuck Norris was asked who would win in a fight between him and Bruce and Chuck said “Bruce of course. Nobody can beat him.” I say all this just to show that Bruce was someone who knew his stuff. He got into movies and television. In America he played Kato on the Green Hornet television show. The TV series Kung Fu was originally written for him, but the producers decided a white man would come across better and so cast David Carradine in the leading role. He was finally cast in the first big budget American martial arts movie, “Enter the Dragon”. In one of the open-ing scenes of that movie, Bruce is seen teaching a young man to strike. He says to the man, “Kick me!” The young man places a perfect roundhouse kick at Bruce who easily steps back and blocks. Bruce says, “Now, show me emotional content.” The young man looks puzzled but kicks again, and again Bruce blocks the kick. The young man kicks again, obviously angry at his inability to strike. After several attempts, Bruce tells the young man that his form can be perfect, but if he does not invest his heart he will never connect. In Matthew 19 we read the story of the rich man and Jesus. The man comes to Jesus and asks, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" 19:17 "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments." 18 "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, "'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'" 20 "All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?" 21 Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." 22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. This man made all the right moves, but he lacked “emotional content”. Paul tells us; “If I speak in the tongues of men and of an-gels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mys-teries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.” We can obey all the commandments, go to church every week and say all the right things, but without investing our hearts we will never connect.

FAMILY LIFE MINISTRY

We have completed four months of The Story, a chronological study of the Bible. I really enjoy seeing the biblical timeline and how everything fits together. Un-fortunately, Israel and Judah went through some dark times, which are currently studying. Their idolatry eventually puts them into exile and many people die. How could this happen to God’s chosen people?

Many Christians live in exile today. They once enjoyed close fellowship with God, but have traded that relationship for the cares of the world and are struggling be-cause they have no peace. What is scary is that, like Israel, they have become de-

luded, thinking that there is no way back from this exile. What can we do to escape? Is there no hope?

Remember, that with God, all things are possible. God always gives us the option of repentance. We have to choose to leave our old ways behind. Like a Father waiting at the door, our God is expecting our return and fully plans on running to us with full forgiveness. All we have to do is decide, which is key, to turn around and take the road home.

Sometimes God takes us into exile in order to refresh our memory of the fact that we need Him to sur-vive. That’s what He did to Judah, but with a mighty promise. He promised to bring them home with a purpose in mind. See what God said to an exiled Judah through the prophet Jeremiah.

This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and ful-fill my good promise to bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.” – Jeremiah 29:10-14

He fully promises to restore us, and prosper us, when we decide to turn around on that road seeking after Him with all our heart.
