    T h e w e l l k n o w n B a l ienvironmentalist said the loss of watersources in Bali's hinterlands is due bothto the loss of vegetation and theintensity of ground water exploitation inthose areas.

As a result, the intense demandon ground water has prompted theprovincial government to encourageconservation by increasing the tax onsub-terrain water sources by 1,000percent.

Steps Underway to CleanUp the Image of Bali'sMother Temple Pura Be

Bali's Mother Temple ofPura Besakih sits high on theslopes of Bali's Mount Agung.sakih. On a mountain viewed bythe Balinese as the "belly-button" of the universe, Besakihis indisputably Bali's mostsacred temples, dating itshistory back to the 14th century.

In fact a complex oftwenty-two temples set onparallel mountain ridges, thedistinctive tiered meru roofs ofthe tens of lesser temples leadthe eyes to the main structure orPura Penataran Agung which, inturn, immediately draws themind and the eyes to the nearbysacred caldera of Mt. Agung.

While Besakih remains amajor tourist and spiritualdestination on the island of Bali,a Karangasem Regencyreligious leader recentlyexpressed to Bisnis Bali his viewthat all parties involved with thesacred temple, both religiousdevotees and tourist visitors, need to achieve a shared viewof the site and the important roleit plays in the island's culturaland religious life. I WayanArthadipa, the Chairman of theMajelis Madya Desa Pakraman

(MMDP) for Karangasem, saidthat Besakih's sacred status inBalinese society tends to mutet h e m a n y d e f i c i e n c i e ssurrounding the daily life ofBali's Mother Temple. Brandingit as unwise to remain silentwhile the image and reputationof the Temple suffers, he urgedlocal leaders and those chargedwith safeguarding the Temple to

have the courage totake the steps necessary torestore Besakih's spiritualand moral standing. Drivinghome his point, he said thatguides leading peoplethrough the complex must

always respect the sacrednature of the Temple, obey allrules already in place and notdefraud or coerce thosevisiting the site.

He also said that theconditions prevailing insidethe Temple are no lessimportant , po in t ing tocriticisms that are oftenh e a rd f ro m d e v o t e e sregarding questionable feesdemanded for mandatoryofferings. Arthadipa called for

transparency in how thefunds flowing in from varioussource to Besakih arehandled. "Besakih has bemanaged well, be organized, and handled in a neat andprofessional manner," hesaid. To do this, he added, the regency of Karangasema n d t h e p r o v i n c i a lgovernment must both beinvolved in order to oversee

Coordinating therevamp of the Temples image,Ardika has issued warnings toguides, traders, parkingattendants and the local peopleliving near Besakih to follow all

They made it home onMonday to Whyte and Mackay, thebrand's owner, for analysis to seehow they have fared after so longpreserved in the polar chill.

Two more crates ofwhisky, along with two of brandy, were also discovered but theywere left under the floorboardsof the hut.

G'day again folks and welcome to this weeks babble. Now, Iknow this editorial is supposed to be about Bali, and it usually is,however, much to the editor's disgust, this week I want to start byoffering my deepest sympathy to all the flood victims back home inAustralia. I have been catching the news at the best place that has allthe satellite goody's (Kuta Townhouses) and have been watching withdisbelief at the sheer amount of water that has been falling from theskies. Entire houses have been washed away in some small countrytowns with complete herds of farming stock being drowned in the next.

The worst footage I saw was of a few horses that had been swimming around in a small town for so long thatthey simply succumb to exhaustion and drowned. Very upsetting stuff. I think the pub was even washedaway in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia, and wouldn't that be terrible. I find it strange that there'sbeen absolutely bugger all rain for maybe 15 years with farmers doing it really hard for the most of that time, then we have almost 2 metres of water running over the same land now. Crazy stuff.

I did see a church group on the news praying at an outback church for the victims of the floods andtheir losses, and as the vicar was being interviewed, he explained that it was an act of god and for the mostpart of me, yes it is something that nature does from time to time, but I had to wonder to myself how theinsurance companies will handle it??? That dreaded term, act of god makes the hairs on the back of myneck stand up especially if I thought I had insurance on my lot. I think it's going to be a very long hard road forsome in Australia over the next few months and believe that all Australians should throw a few bucks into thecharity events that wil l be happening, so keep your eye out and don't be a tight arse. I remember when thebig tsunami's hit some time back, maybe 18 months ago, and I recall the Australian government sending aidand a big big swag of money to different governments to help out with the clean up and rebuilding, so Iwonder whether those same governments will be so quick to send some support or aid dollars back???Only time will tell.

Anyway, moving right along, I did get an email from one of our readers regarding last week's rambleabout the lost puppy, and with that in mind I firmly believe the Bali Micro Chipping System is a winner. The letter is as follows:

Hello Aliasj,I was very interested to read your article last week regarding the dog that went missing. I

experienced the same thing, when we moved to this beautif ul Island we brought our beloved GoldenRetriever, Barry with us (which was no cheap exercise I might add). Anyhow we did get Barrymicrochipped as we felt it was worth doing, and about 2 months later he went missing much to thedistress of myself and the whole family. About two days later we spotted him being walked bysome kids fro m a few blocks up who insi sted that he was there's and had been given to them by theiruncle, needless to say we contacted the Bali microchipping company who came out and verifiedthat the dog was ours, and thankfully Barry was returned to us st raight away without an argument. So I would recommend to anyone that loves their pet that it 's worth spending that little bit extra toget the microc hipping d one. By the way I really look forw ard to getting t he Kuta Weekly each weekand thoroughl y enjoy reading your articl e, keep up the good work. Kind Regards.

    NAME WITHHELD as request ed

So there you have it, another happy reader, and thank you for the input. We do get alot of emailsregarding things on the island and am happy to publish what we can when we can, so keep them coming. Okpunters it's off to the watering hole for a few sherbets' and a yarn with good friends for the rest of the week, Ihope you all stay safe, happy and healthy till next week, and I will ask you all to remember, The Act of God designation on all insurance policies means roughly, that you cannot be insured for the accidents that aremost likely to happen to you.

    Enjoy your week, ..

BOISE, ID QuickGem Staters, hidethe Biggie Smalls! The state of Idaho isbann ing h ip -hopmusic!

    The Idaho StateL e g i s l a t u r e

unanimously passed abill on Friday thatprohibits anyone in thestate from playing hip-hop or rap.

Under the newlaw, anyone caught listening tohip-hop would be slapped with a$3,000 fine, or worse, could faceup to seven months in prison.

Legislators from the IdahoHouse of Reps said the decisionto ban hip-hop was based on astudy conducted by University ofIdaho scientists, which showedthat rap music can have adverseeffects on young listeners.

Rap music leads toviolence, said RepublicanSharon Maclean. So if you wantto get rid of the violence, you haveto get rid of rap music. It's thatsimple.

The law would also prohibitIdaho radio stations from playing

anything that resembleship-hop music, including reggae, techno, dancehall, and pop.

I'm just trying to raise myk i d s i n a w h o l e s o m eenvironment, said John Stiglitz, aresident of Boise and father oftwo, and if that means getting ridof rap music, then so be it.

    It's a shame, though,added Stiglitz. I really enjoyed

Kanye's phat beats.Though the bill received

overwhe lming suppor t inCongress, some Gem Staters feelthat the new resolution is a blatantattack on hip-hop culture.

This is unfair, said MikeWilliams, a 23-year-old rapperhrough music. It's not violent. I've

    f r o m N a m p awhose stage name isThuggy Bumpkins. Hip-hop is a way for people toexpress themselvesthrough music. It's notviolent. I've listened tohip-hop all my life, and noto n ce h a ve I d o n e

    anything illegal.Williams, along

with other Idaho-basedrappers, launched acampaign against the billcalled Rappers Against

the Prohibition, or RAP. They'vealready organized severalprotests and rap-ins around thestate.

Our mission is to getpeople out in the streets, saidWilliams. Our voices need to beheard. This anti-rap bill is unfairand it must be stopped!

    But despite the voices of

opposition, those in the IdahoState Legislature show no signsof backing down.

They can complain all theywant, said Democrat MarkHarping. But we're standing firmin our decision to ban rap. If theywant to beef, tell them to bring iton!

TAURUSThe coming weeks will bring an increasing planetaryfocus on your goals, especially those of a long-rangenature. Begin considering your options now, since withrecent events having ushered in dramatic changes, whatonce suited you might no longer be of interest, while othernew ideas could take centre stage.

GEMINIBeing intrigued by the latest developments just becausethey're fascinating is not universal. While you're alwaysinterested in learning about what's going on around you,not everybody is. And that's exactly what you're dealingwith now, which is an individual who's simply doesn't careabout matters that are of no direct, personal, influence.

CANCERBe wary of taking certain situations too seriously. True, what's decided or done will have considerable influenceon your life and the circumstances of others. However, your concern about doing things properly is giving someindividuals the impression you don't trust them, which is

very much not the case. Try to be more easygoing.

LEOThose around you are working themselves into a frenzyover details. But you're taking things less seriously.Actually, by the time that Mercury meets Pluto, planet oftruth and power struggles, early next week, you'll want toboth have your facts in order and make whatever plansare appropriate.

VIRGOSome of what's being discussed isn't just incorrect, it'sunfair. Ordinarily you'd be right to protest. But others aren'tas aware of the facts as you are, which could lead toconfusion, if not embarrassment. Difficult as listening tothem speak half-truths and saying nothing may be, it's thebest option.

LIBRAThe expectation that the changes triggered by theeclipsed New Moon, early last week, would be settledswiftly was somewhat optimistic. The repercussions willcontinue for some time. This slower pace is unsettling, butenables you to explore and weigh up your options beforeyou attempt to make a final decision.

SCORPIOHealing comes in many forms, and currently it's likely toinvolve regaining your sense of humour. You're taking onerather unfortunate situation far too seriously. Eventuallyyou'll recognise what was funny about it. The sooner youdo, the more swiftly you'll be able to move on, and put it allbehind you.

SAGITTARIUSWhen you kept financial or business matters to yourself, itwas only because you regarded them as so dull that youdidn't want to bother others. Unfortunately certainindividuals attached completely different, and far lessnoble, intentions to this. Explain now, and fully, or they'll beconvinced their suspicions were correct.

CAPRICORNNow that you've had a chance to reflect on theunexpected, if promising, events of the year's first week, your attitude is far more positive. The fact is, thesechanges aren't just necessary, they'll breathe new life intoexisting arrangements. The more swiftly you get them

going, the better for everybody concerned.

AQUARIUSGoing over old ground may not be your idea of fun. Butwith a series of errors surfacing as a result of recentmistakes or misunderstandings, you really have nochoice. This won't just untangle the problems in question, you'll also recognise the source of these errors and will putthings right.

PISCESBecause you're far more aware of your feelings thanothers, you often know more than they do about their innerworld or emotions. Bear this in mind now. It won't justexplain their rather bizarre reaction to certain stressfulsituations, you'll also deal with them with a combination oftact and wisdom.

Progressive Tax for PeopleOwning Multiple PrivateVehicles Opposed by BaliAutomotive Circles

    L e a d e r s i n B a l iautomotive sector are predictingthat car sales will decline if theprovincial government's plan tointroduce a progressive tax on

vehicle ownership is introducedas planned in 2011.

The head o f AstraInternational's Diahatsu divisionin Bali, Oka Raidana, said thedecision to apply a 1.5%-3.5%tax on the selling price of avehicle for buyers owning morethan one vehicle will negativelyimpact on the buying power of thepublic.

Said Raidana, in additionto the progressive tax, the buyingpower of the public is also

    i m p a c t e d b y t h eintroduction of a plan to limitgovernment subsidies forpremium grade gasoline.

These conditions, he toldthe state news agency Antara, are likely to affect the number ofnew cars sold in Bali, with thesize of that decline dependent onthe final actual amount of taximposed.

Of at least equal concernto the automotive sector,

according to Raidana, areindications that the tax charged onthe change of title ownership for acar will be increased by another10%.

Meanwhile, the managerof the Denpasar branch of Auto2000, Faris Henky Irawan, objectsto the planned progressive tax,

insisting it is the wrong way to tryto reduce the overcrowding onBali's roadways. Irawan predictsthat new rule will merely pushpeople to borrow names offriends and family members whenregistering a new vehicle.

Irawan said the mosteffective way of reducing trafficcongestion is to improve andexpand the public transportationsystem on the island which, in hisopinion, is completely inadequateto meet the public's need.

The World Cup is not theplace to blood playersespecially as the bloodf r om t h i s A us t r a l i ansummer is still warm.

Adding tattoos are greatwhen you are scoring runs ortaking wickets.

But without these vitalstatistics, the nakedness andinadequacies are all too apparent.

Okay, you lot in JolimontStreet, you can wake up now andtry to forget the colonel fromKentucky and the rep from thebrewery.

We have a World Cup towin.

The form of the Australianteam in the last twelve months hasbeen underwhelming in all forms, including the 50 over game. Theyscraped a 3-2 win over New

Zealand and lost 3-2 to England inJuly 2010.To compound matters,

they lost to Sri Lanka for the firsttime in Australia.

Even though Australia is afou r th favou r i t e w i th thebookmakers, they showedenough during Sunday's win thatthey can take a fifth World Cup.

Ricky Ponting remains theman to lead our defence. He hasearned the right to fail.

It is time to look beyond thestatistics and see who scoredwhat and against whom and underwhat pressure. Sometimes a lossis more instructive than a win.

    B a t s m e n w h o h a v eimpressed in the last twelvemonths are Cameron White,David Hussey, Shane Watson andMichael Hussey.

    B o w l e r s t h a t h a v eimpressed and are currently fit(Harris is excluded due to injury,as is Mitchell Starc. McKay and

Hast ings are a lsoinjured)) include Bollinger,Nannes, Tait and Lee.

    Watson doubles up inthis category.

For those that discountTait, just hark back to the look ofdisbelief on Strauss's facewhen he was cleaned up lastyear. That delivery was timed at161.1 kmh and only marginallyslower than the 161.3recorded by Akhtar.

Tait is the only one of hiskind in the world and there is nobatsman who is confident whenthe Wild Thing is not so wild.

Bollinger was expensiveand is struggling to get above135 kph. I think he has missedthe plane.

Lee was economical inMelbourne and maintained hispace in the death overs. He is

rusty but remains a provenperformer. His fielding and lateorder batting place him wellahead of Bollinger.

The premier 50 oversall-rounder remains JamesHopes and he rarely plays a badgame for Australia. Christian isa contender and could be thesurprise packet if selected.

Of all the spinners, thereis only room for Nathan Hauritzand the rest of the spinningduties will have to be borne byDavid Hussey and Steve Smith.

Nannes is seen as aTwenty20 specialist, as isO'Keefe, so they will not be partof the World Cup squad. Earlywickets are a key in the sub-continent and Johnson, Lee,Tait and Siddle could be vital .

The omission of Siddleand Hauritz from Sunday'sgame suggests they are on theplane to India. Johnson wasalso originally rested from this

No room for Clarke in Australia's World Cup squadgame and in spite of his

idiosyncrasies will go to theWorld Cup. His football skillsare sublime, as was evident inhis runout o f KP.

This brings me to myWorld Cup First XI in battingorder:Watson,Haddin,Ponting (c)

    White,HusseyD,HusseyM,Hopes, Hauritz, Johnson, Lee

, TaitThe other four spots to

Callum Ferguson, Siddle, SteveSmith and James Pattinson.

The history of the WorldCup, especially in the sub-continent, suggests that one ortwo of the top six batsmen hasto bowl at least five serviceableovers. Think Aravinda De Silvain 1996 and Steve Waugh in1987.

    Watson and Dav id

Hussey can fill this role.In fact, I see the Husseybrothers and Shane Watson asthe most important men in theAustralian line-up. Michael gotAustralia back on course afterClarke had scratched aroundfor 36 of 57 balls.

Michael Clarke has beenout of form all summer and I donot believe he can turn it aroundin four weeks.

David Hussey got the firsttwo wickets and stalledEngland, just as they werelooking to run away from

    Australia.Steven Smith did not

harm his chances with thewickets of Bell and Morgan, andthough he failed as a pinchhitter, he would have learnt fromthe pressure. In a largely sloppyfielding display, he wasAustralia's best.

The most glaring omissionI have made is Michael Clarkeand I cannot see any justificationfor his inclusion.

He is badly out of formand needs to go away andcome back a better player. Hisreluctance to bowl also limitsAustralia's options. But if theselections run to form, thenClarke will be included andpossibly at the cost of

someone like David Husseyor Callum Ferguson.Anointing captains in waitingis a dangerous practice andCricket Australia may rue theday they marked MichaelClarke as the next captain.

Tim Paine misses out in mysquad even though he is a betterkeeper. Haddin was untidy onSunday, but his batting can wingames for Australia and with

more game time, Haddin'swork to the spinners will improve.

Michael Hussey will haveto double as a keeper shouldHaddin get injured.

Brad Hodge, unfortunately, will not figure in the final squadand this will remain a dagger inCricket Australia's heart as longas the current regime is in power.

    And our custodians will

have to be consigned tothe ignominy of perpetualignorance.

    Karmichael Hunt hasrevealed his concernso v e r t h e B r i s b a n eB r o n c o s ' d i r e c t i o nfollowing mentor WayneBennett's move souths p a r k e d h i s s h o c k

signing wi th the AFL.Preparing for Gold CoastSuns' AFL debut in April, Huntindicated he'd still be playing inthe NRL if the Broncos hadcontinued to run their operations

like they had underlong-time coach Bennett, whoswitched to St George Illawarralate in 2008.

The former Test andQueensland fullback told AlphaMagazine he lost faith and anemotional attachment to theclub after a contract meetingwith former chief executiveBruno Cullen, football managerPeter Nolan and new coachIvan Henjak in early 2009.

It was nothing like thetalks I'd had previously, whenWayne had been there, Hunttold Alpha.

What was said in therereally struck a nerve with meand got me thinking about theway things were being run andthe way I was being treated.

That meeting endedmy days as a diehard Broncosfan and player.

From there I was ableto step back and look ateverything objectively. Theemotion was gone.

After starting for theBroncos at 17, Hunt played 126matches in the NRL over sixseasons before leaving theclub on a three-year AFL deal inexcess of $3 million, more thantwo-and-a-half t imes theamount he would havereceived at Brisbane.

I still have a lot of

friends at the club, but there'sno doubt the Broncos club I leftat the end of 2009 was verydifferent to the club I arrived atin 2004, the 24-year-old said.

Looking back, thetiming was probably perfect.

People laugh, but itwas never about the money forme. I genuinely felt I hadachieved everything I had set

out to achieve in myrugby league career.

I just liked the idea oftaking on a challenge I knewmost people would think wasridiculous.

With 12 weeks to gobefore the Suns play theirinaugural match againstCarlton on April 2, Hunt hastrimmed down below 90kg,eight kilos lighter than when heplayed French rugby union forBiarritz nine months ago.

He has also givenhimself a strong chance oflining up in defence in thehistoric match at the Gabba byimproving his aerobic fitness, now running 2km time trials inseven minutes.

T o p u t t h a t i nperspective, most of yoursmall forwards and defendersand some of the half-forwardswould be around that mark, said Suns assistant coach andNorm Smith Medallist ShaunHart.

I don't have any doubthe will get his fitness andrunning to a level which willallow him to play good minutesthrough the midfield.

Hawthorn premiershipplayer Campbell Brown, nowat Gold Coast, said Hunt'sdetermination made himconfident his Suns' teammatewould be a success in the AFL.

I have always saidShane Crawford was the mostdetermined player I had everseen, said Brown.

I see a lot of theattributes which made Crawfso special in K.

    He won't let himselffail.

The star signing suffered ashoulder injury in the UK midwaythrough last season and hassecured an early release from histhree-year contract, with the Bullsrefusing to clarify why they haveallowed his departure.

"There are valid but strictlyconfidential reasons why MattOrford is unable to return to the UK

    t h r e e i n t e r c h a n g ep l a y e r s a n d o n esubstitute this season,with the sub able to beused at any time and theplayer he replaces not eligible toreturn to the field.

Hird said that Richmondcoach Damien Hardwick wasprobably right on the moneywhen he suggested last weekthat star midfielders were likely toplay more minutes in 2011.

He's a smart man. He(Hardwick) is probably right, Hirdsaid on Wednesday.

More midfielders wouldspend some time up forward, that would make sense, justbecause there's one player lessto rotate through (midfield).

Hardwick, a formerBombers team-mate of Hird's,also feels the second-ruckmanposition could come underthreat but clubs will just have tosee how things develop during

    next month's pre-season NAB

    Cup.It won't change my

coaching style because Ihaven't coached before, said Hird, flashing a boyishgrin.

It will be different. There will be less rotations.

    Certainly the game

will change a little bit becauseof it but who knows how it willchange?

We're trying to thinkthrough that at the present.

Hird sounded a warning toback-up ruckmen, saying theyneeded to be versatile with onlythree interchange players allowedon the bench.

It depends who they are. Ifthey can play forward they'redefinitely not (under threat), if theycan play back they're not, he said.

Manly look to rookie flair for 2011 spark

    See Our Voucher on 32

Manly will look to theyoungest halves pairingin the NRL to deliversome excitement andflair in the upcomingNRL season.

    Two seasons af ter

    leading Manly's Toyota Cupteam to the minor premiership,Kieran Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans will become the elitec o m p e t i t i o n ' s l e a s texperienced duo.

Not that either player istoo concerned.

They're more interestedin providing the spark forManly's attack and helping the2008 premiers get back ontrack after two straight years offirst week finals exits.

    Hopefully a bit of flair

and exci tement , Forangrinned when asked what thepair will offer Manly this year.

Daly's that kind of playerwhere he'll chance his arm,he'll look after that structuralstuff and just allow me to kind ofplay my game a little bi t wider.

This is just real lyexciting I think.

    O n l y C a n t e r b u r y ' shalves pairing of 22-year-olds

Kris Keating and TrentHodkinson compares to theyouth Manly will put on displayin 2011.

At just 20, Foran isalready taking his place as thesenior partner ahead of 21-year-old Cherry-Evans and it's

a role he admits will take somegetting used to.(I've only played) 30

games or so and I feel I've gotto take Daly under the wingthere, but I'm looking forward toit, Foran added.

With Daly coming inhe's probably going to be a littlebit standoffish these first fewgames, I've got to take theresponsibility there and lead(the senior) guys around.

(But) he's really capableof stepping up and doing a

good job.It is the second time injust 12 months the Sea Eagleshave been forced to play with arookie halves combination, after Hodkinson was handedthe role last year following thedeparture of former captainMatt Orford.

Hodkinson blossomedunder the pressure, pushinghimself into representative

football with a City Origincall-up before accepting alucrative three-year deal withCanterbury worth a rumoured$280,000.

Manly skipper JamieLyon believes Cherry-Evans ison the verge of having a similar

impact on the competition thisyear.I think he'll have just as

big an impact as Trent if notbigger, Lyon said.

I don't want to put toomuch pressure on him but weare quietly confident that hecan do a great job.

He's a very goodorganiser, he's got good ballskills and a great kickinggame. He's very quick off themark.

He's going to be a great

    halfback for us I think.With Cherry-Evans andForan confirmed as Manly'sstarting halves pairing for thes e a s o n - o p e n e r w i t hMelbourne, Lyon is hopeful ofplaying out the 2011 season inhis preferred centre position.

I'm pretty sure I'll be inthe centres, that's where Iprefer. Hopefully I can staythere the whole season, hesaid.
