10 tips to learn a new language!

New Year’s Resolutions for 2012

1. Leer / Read

!   Intente comprender una frase que contenga palabras cuyo significado desconozca. Quizá pueda deducir el significado del vocabulario que no conoce sirviéndose del contexto. Sólo después de esto, busque las nuevas palabras en el diccionario.

!   Try to understand sentences that contain words you have not seen before. Maybe you will be able to deduce their meaning through the context. Only after having done this look up the new words in the dictionary.

2. Escuchar / Listen

!   Escuche varias veces un texto grabado. No debe entenderlo completamente. A partir de ahí puede intentar comprender algunos detalles en particular. Escuche, en la medida de lo posible, tantos diálogos y libros en formato de audio en el idioma extranjero como pueda. La comprensión auditiva en el aprendizaje de una nueva lengua es muy importante y es siempre el paso previo a la expresión oral.

!   Listen to audio texts repeatedly, you might not understand it all, but you should try and pick out words you do understand. Do as many listening exercises in the target Language as possible, whether its books or dialogues. Listening comprehension in language learning is very important and is always the step before oral expression.

3. Hablar / Talking

!   Pronuncie varias veces el vocabulario aprendido: en voz alta, en voz baja, riendo o incluso cantando. Aprender pequeños diálogos de memoria ayuda a entrenar la capacidad de retentiva.

!   Repeat new vocabulary you’ve learnt out loud, quietly to yourself, whilst laughing or even singing them. Try and learn small dialogues off by heart as this helps train your memory.

4. Pronunciar / Pronunciation

!   Siempre que pueda, observe la boca de un hablante nativo e intente imitar las expresiones faciales, los movimientos, la postura y la entonación.

!   Whenever possible observe how a native speaker forms their words, and try to imitate their facial expressions, movements, posture and intonation.

5. Escribir / Writing

!   Escriba la nueva palabra en todas partes: en un bloc de notas, en los cristales de las ventanas, en los espejos y, por supuesto, en su cuaderno de nuevo vocabulario. Cuantas más veces la escriba, mejor grabada se le quedará.

!   Write new words everywhere, on a notepad, on window panes, mirrors and obviously in your vocab book. The more you get used to writing it the more chance of memorizing it.

6. Aprender con un tándem /

Tandem language learning !   Un buen método para mejorar, de forma privada, un idioma

extranjero es el aprendizaje con una pareja de conversación. El aprendizaje con un tándem, sobre todo, le dará muy buenos resultados. Así, su pareja de conversación aprende alemán y usted su lengua. Otra posibilidad son los intercambios de correspondencia o email.

!   The best way to learn a foreign language is one on one conversations with a partner. Learning with a tandem above all will give great results. That way your partner will learn German, and in exchange you can learn their language. Another option is exchanging emails or letters, in the style of a pen pal.

7. Posición de aprendizaje / Learning position !   En la medida de lo posible, estudie de pie o

caminando. Desarrolle estos movimientos en cuestión y evite, dentro de lo que cabe, estudiar sentado.

!   Try and study standing up, or while moving around as much as possible. Develop the movements in question and avoid studying sitting down.

8. Memorizar nuevo vocabulario / Memorize new vocabulary !   Trate de percibir las nuevas palabras con todos

sus sentidos: oliendo, saboreando, sintiendo, tocando, escuchando y observando. Desarrolle el concepto a través de una imagen adecuada.

!   Take in every new word using all your senses feel, smell, taste, touch, listen and watch. Develop the concept using a suitable image.

9. Memorizar nuevo vocabulario de una forma permanente /

Memorize and retain new vocabulary permanently

!   Las palabras y frases importantes tienen que repetirse tan frecuentemente como sea posible: al terminar el día, después de una semana y al final del mes.

!   Important words and phrases have be repeated as often as possible: at the end of the day, week, or month.

10. Radio y Televisión / Radio and Television !   Busque una emisora de radio y un canal de televisión en el

nuevo idioma que está aprendiendo. Escuche la emisora y/o vea ese canal regularmente durante varios minutos al día. Con el tiempo será capaz de entender cada vez más palabras.

!   Find a radio station and tv channel in the target language that you’re learning. Listen to the station and tv channel as regularly as possible for a decent amount of time. Try and do this on regular basis for a fair amount of time per day. In time you will understand more and more.
