Calling all fifth and fourth grade parents or anyone interested in working with our silver knights as they spend part of their day exploring hands-on Science experiments! You do not have to be a rocket scientist to help. All of our labs are planned and ready to go. We simply need more hands and eyes to set up, clean up and help keep the experiments running smoothly so that the students can focus on learning!

To volunteer, click on the schedules on the PTA website: http://shaferelementary.my-pta.org/content.asp?PageID=2

Got Books? Let's help build our classroom libraries while cleaning out our own bookshelves at home! Send in your gently used books to the front office and they will help get them to the appropriate

Lunchroom volunteers play an important role in helping our students and

staff. These dedicated volunteers help with opening lunch items, especially for the littlest Silver Knights, with passing out napkins, straws, silverware and other important items, and with helping to monitor students. Since you will be working with students, no younger siblings are allowed. Volunteers are needed to help on

a regular basis, so please consider volunteering consistently. If you have questions, please contact Jenni Detton at [email protected].

Where is home? I was born in Midland, Texas, grew up in Keller, Texas, but consider Lubbock, Texas to be my home.

Family:

I have a wonderful husband of almost 3 years named Reece and a dog named Gracie who is our “fur baby.”

Education:

Teacher Spotlight Lacey Fickes 2nd Grade Teacher

I graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies, accompanied by a Minor in American Sign Language.

Why did you become a teacher? I first got the desire to become a teacher while I was working as an educational interpreter for LubbockISD. I was placed in a kindergarten class full time, and though I was apprehensive at first, I ended up falling in love with working with young children and watching them grow and learn. The teacher whose class I was in was absolutely incredible and is one of the main reasons why I became so inspired to pursue a career in teaching. Seeing the impact she made on her students inspires me daily to be the best teacher I can be to my students. If you were not a teacher today, what would your career be? I would be a Sign Language Interpreter.

What is the most important lesson you have learned in life that you would like to share with your students?

Sometimes our plans don’t work out the way that we

hope that they will and our life goes in a completely different direction than we anticipate it will. But just because something is different doesn’t mean it has to be bad; sometimes ‘different’ turns out to be beautiful and better than the original plan ever could have dreamt of being.

What three traits define you?

Positive, Encouraging, Loving

Where is your favorite place you have ever traveled to and why?

Traveling to anywhere in Texas is one of my very

favorite things to do, but outside of our great state, my favorite place I’ve been to would have to be Cordoba, Argentina. We went there a few years ago for a family dove hunt and it was just beautiful, the food was delicious, and we made some unforgettable memories!

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? I love going to listen to live country music whenever I

have the chance, spending time with my family and friends, and eating LOTS of good Mexican food.

Who has inspired you the most or had the biggest influence on you? Why?

My sister. She is very intentional about how she chooses to show up in this world, and she lives her life

that way. Have you ever heard of the saying, "Be the person you needed when you were younger?” Well,

she's that person. But she's that person for every stage of your life.

Family: I am married to Scott and we have two boys, Eli and Ezra, and two dogs, Lulu and Bubba.

Education:

Graduated from Catholic University with a

degree in Drama (minored in Special Education)

Why did you become a teacher?

I have an advocate's heart for children with special needs, and I want nothing more than to serve them, encourage them, pour into them and teach them. What is your favorite moment you have ever had

as a teacher or a student?

My most memorable moment with a student was

with a young boy in 4th grade. He felt

completely alone in the world, had been shuffled

around in a broken home environment, had been

in and out of different schools and behavior

programs - and after knowing me for only one

day, he told me at the end of that day with a big

ol' smile on his face, "Mrs. B, I can't wait to see

you tomorrow." And it's moments like that when

I just know I am where I'm supposed to be.

Where do you consider home? Millersville, MD

If you could have anyone (living, dead or fictional)

as your principal, who would it be?

Robin Williams’ character from the movie Dead

Poet's Society!

What was the weirdest job you ever had? I was an actress for most of my life, so there are just too many to name! What three traits define you? Giving, loving, trustworthy
