How It All Began….. The first King’s Lynn Festival in 1951 wasorganised by Ruth Lady Fermoy as acelebration of the restoration of the Guildhallof St George. She arranged a week-longprogramme of music and the arts which shehoped could be the foundation for an annualevent. She was keen for West Norfolk peopleto experience the best in the world of artsand thought a festival could be of greatbenefit to the town. Her hopes were quicklyrealised for that first venture proved a hugesuccess and the event soon gained nationaland international renown.
The 15th century Guildhall was at the heart ofLady Fermoy’s endeavours because of itsgreat historic significance. It is the largestsurviving Medieval Guildhall in England andis said to be the oldest theatre in Europe.Shakespeare is reputed to have appeared onits stage. After World War II the building, which had been used as a scenery store, wasput up for sale. A motor engineering firm wasinterested in buying it with a view toacquiring the site for redevelopment. Theproposal attracted publicity and a wealthy
and cultured Norfolk man, Alexander Penrose, bought the Guildhall to save it from demolitionand enlisted the help of Lord and LadyFermoy to raise funds to restore the buildingfor use as an arts centre. Lord Fermoy was aformer MP and Mayor of Lynn and his wifean accomplished concert pianist.
With the maxim “nothing but the best” LadyFermoy used her contacts in the arts world toassemble a list of artists, whose names havebecome legends, to take part. She was aclose friend and lady-in-waiting to the thenQueen (Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother)who became the Festival’s Patron andremained so until her death. Such was thesignificance of the opening of the Guildhallthat the occasion was broadcast live by theBBC Home Service.
At the second Festival, conductor Sir JohnBarbirolli began a long association with King’sLynn which was marked 18 years later whenhe was made a Freeman of the Borough. SirJohn was the first of a long list of personalitiesto voice appreciation of Lynn’s specialqualities and friendly festival atmosphere.

Beowulf is the oldest story in the English language. It tells ofa hero’s life, a life that is mapped by three tremendous blood-curdling encounters. As a young man Beowulf defeats theMonster Grendel and his even more terrifying mother, theoriginal creatures of the Black Lagoon. Then, as an old man,he tries his strength against a gold-guarding dragon Fire-Drake. Alongside these adrenalin-charged encounters thestory explores the journey from the seeming invincibility ofyouth to the heroic vulnerability of old age.
