This cross border project, funded by the European Commission will bring long-term enhancements to The Hortillonnages in Amiens and to the public realm in King’s Lynn and surrounding area, as well as supporting tourism, providing a mentoring and training project and creating oppor-tunities for a host of cultural activities. The project focuses on attracting young individuals or groups to design and build artworks and landscaping projects and is being developed in co-operation with the local communi-ties. www.artcitieslandscape.com

King’s Lynn was one of England’s most important ports from as early as the 12th century and this maritime past is still very much in evidence today. Fine old merchants’ houses stretch down to the river between cobbled lanes and the elegant Custom House overlooks the original me-dieval harbour. An important Hanseatic town during much of its history, it is a proud member of the modern day Hanse.

The 12th century King’s Lynn Minster dominates the Saturday Market Place around which is some of the finest architecture in England. His-toric Queen Street and beautiful King Street lead into Tuesday Market Place, perhaps one of England’s grandest squares.

As a renowned centre for culture, Lynn is home to both the King’s Lynn Arts Centre and the Corn Exchange concert venue. Combined with the annual King’s Lynn Festival and Festival Too, the town offers an out-standing programme of arts and entertainment throughout the year.

King’s Lynn is the gateway to the Fens and to the beautiful Norfolk Coast. In the town itself you can enjoy walks along the riverfront, through the town’s historic streets or through its urban parks, includ-ing The Walks and Tower Gardens, winners of prestigious Green Flag Awards given to some of England’s finest parks.

King’s Lynn’s growth originated around Saturday Market Place with the building of St Margaret’s Church (King’s Lynn Minster) from the 12th century. Saturday Market Place is surrounded by fine historic buildings including the magnificent Trinity Guildhall and Town Hall complex. A short walk down St Margaret’s Place past the main entrance to King’s Lynn Minster leads to the junction of Nelson Street, St Margaret’s Lane and Priory Lane home to many of King’s Lynn’s oldest and most attrac-tive houses. In the opposite direction along Queen Street, Thoresby College is a fine Tudor complex and courtyard which originally housed the priests of the Trinity Guild.

MEDIEVAL OLD TOWNLA VIEILLE VILLE MEDIEVALE

King’s Lynn’s historic waterfront along the River Great Ouse features fine historic buildings including the iconic Custom House situated alongside The Purfleet, the town’s principal anchorage for ships since medieval times. Designed by Henry Bell in 1683 The Custom House was restored and opened as a heritage centre and Tourist Information Centre around 1999.

Along South Quay, Marriott’s Warehouse was built as a Tudor warehouse around 1580, and was extensively restored around 2000 as part of a scheme to restore and enhance the entire waterfront area.

Close to Marriott’s Warehouse is Hanse House, England’s only surviving Kontor or trading post of the Hanseatic league of merchants. The splen-did complex of buildings around the courtyard spans the 15th – 18th centuries and has recently been undergoing a programme of restoration and refurbishment to provide public access.

From the corner of the Tuesday Market Place to the Custom House, is magnificent King Street which became the preferred location for Lynn’s merchants from the 14th century. Behind the grand buildings on King Street was a world of warehouses, breweries and merchants yards. St George’s Guildhall on King Street, England’s largest surviving guildhall, was probably built around 1430 and has long been used as a theatre and performance venue, along with the warehouses to the rear which were restored and converted into galleries for displays and workshops in the 1990’s.

Tuesday Market Place is probably one of England’s grandest squares. Home to the 17th century Duke’s Head Hotel, designed by Henry Bell, it also features the Corn Exchange which was restored and converted into a theatre and performance venue around 1996.

To the north of Tuesday Market Place, St Nicholas’ Chapel is England’s largest parochial Chapel. Founded in 1146 and named after St Nicholas the patron saint of sailors, the current chapel was erected in the 15th century and features a wooden roof with a series of beautifully carved angels. Grant funding has recently been secured to carry out a pro-gramme of improvement to the building and facilities to develop it into a thriving community facility.

True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum is dedicated to the heritage and lives of people who worked in the old fishing quarter ‘The North End’. The museum features cottages in the last surviving fisherfolk yard in Lynn as well as Lynn’s recently restored last Victorian Smokehouse and a fully restored and rigged 1904 fishing smack.

Composed with archive images, geographical and stellar maps, “Night Sailors” draws on King’s Lynn’s role as a cradle of development for deep-sea navigation in the Middle Ages.

15 Savages SavagesNew benches and planters were commissioned by the Borough Council for the recently refurbished Tuesday Market Place. The bespoke design takes inspiration from the renowned King’s Lynn engineer Frederick Savage (1828 – 1897), famous for his fairground rides. The benches will include design features taken from original casting moulds rescued from the Savages Engineering Works. The benches and planters will also feature images of the famous Savages gallopers.

The Outer Purfleet is an evocative reminder of King’s Lynn’s maritime heritage when the area was alive with activity as boats unloaded cargo and merchants went about their business.

Rock Around the Fleet is a series of floating buoys with metal designs suggesting seabirds, which evoke a feeling of movement and animation reminiscent of the past.

Using the existing layout of an old planted area, she has created a tranquil seating area surrounded by cliffs and seascape planting, a peaceful area in a busy part of King’s Lynn.

9 AXIS MUNDI UK AXIS MUNDI UKAxis Mundi UK have installed five carved designs emerging from the ground. A drumstick has been carved at the tip of each post and is designed in tribute to Roger Taylor, drummer from the band Queen who was born in King’s Lynn.

11 Come On Come On Representing the ancient flow of water which connected the town centre with the river and the sea, ‘Come on!’ features elements which rise from the ground in a ribbon of vertical signs and flowing benches. They are designed to catch people’s attention and offer an expanse of predominately black and white flowers.

12 Crates on Waves Crates on Waves Like boats plying a peaceful sea, the four scenes of the ‘Crates on Waves’ urban garden evoke a sense of tranquillity. Inspired by Kings Lynn’s maritime history, crates of aromatic plants are spread across lazy decks and gently undulating waves of grass and meadow wildflowers. A scented island in a busy sea of shops.

The Walks is a 17 hectare 18th century park in the

centre of historic King’s Lynn. In recent years a £4.3 million restoration project funded jointly by the

Borough Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, saw the park restored to its former glory. Boasting a unique 15th century Grade

1 listed chapel, The Red Mount, the park also features the only surviv-ing example of a complete Georgian walk in Norfolk as well as beautiful landscaping, two children’s play areas and a café.

The secluded walled garden has been designed with wildlife in mind and with a desire to reuse and recycle wherever possible. Enjoy the beauty and serenity of this hidden gem.
