KING’S HOUSE SCHOOL Page 1 Newsletter 24 November 2017 Dear Parents It’s been an incredibly busy time all across the school for the last week. Firstly, thank you to everyone who donated cakes for our Cake Sales at the end of last week in aid of Children in Need. There was a wonderful array of delicious items on offer and we raised more than £850 over the two days! An outstanding effort. There have been performances galore to enjoy too as well with four tea concerts – two music ones (one JD and one SD) as well as two LAMDA ones. These provide great opportunities for the boys to perform, be it music or drama, to a small friendly audience and take those first steps on the performance ladder. I particularly enjoyed attending the JD one on Tuesday with so many budding young musicians on show, including recorder, strings and singing groups. Can I also highlight an exciting musical event our boys are involved in this Sunday with the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra at St Anne’s Church, Kew Green at 4.30pm. Please see the attached flier and good luck to all the boys participating. The rugby season is now well underway. Our Year 5 U10A team set the ball rolling on Saturday with an excellent all-round performance in the St Paul’s Festival. They won two games – including beating the hosts – drew one against Shrewsbury House, and were only defeated by a club side. The U13 and U11A teams then enjoyed some very good results at the Wellington festival on Wednesday. In my assembly on Monday I talked the SD boys about a number of aspects to do with safety. One of the points I stressed was parking and keeping the front of the school (Nursery, JD and SD) clear of cars. Please could parents also avoid parking on the yellow lines at the end of Springrove Road as this makes the corners dangerous for crossing. Our neighbours at No. 64 have also asked that parents do not park across their driveway or use it for turning. Thank you in advance for your help with this. Dear Parents

It’s been an incredibly busy time all across the school for the last week. Firstly, thank you

to everyone who donated cakes for our Cake Sales at the end of last week in aid of

Children in Need. There was a wonderful array of delicious items on offer and we raised

more than £850 over the two days! An outstanding effort.

There have been performances galore to enjoy too as well with four tea concerts – two

music ones (one JD and one SD) as well as two LAMDA ones. These provide great

opportunities for the boys to perform, be it music or drama, to a small friendly audience

and take those first steps on the performance ladder. I particularly enjoyed attending the

JD one on Tuesday with so many budding young musicians on show, including recorder,

strings and singing groups.

Can I also highlight an exciting musical event our boys are involved in this Sunday with

the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra at St Anne’s Church, Kew Green at 4.30pm. Please

see the attached flier and good luck to all the boys participating.

The rugby season is now well underway. Our Year 5 U10A team set the ball rolling on

Saturday with an excellent all-round performance in the St Paul’s Festival. They won two

games – including beating the hosts – drew one against Shrewsbury House, and were only

defeated by a club side. The U13 and U11A teams then enjoyed some very good results

at the Wellington festival on Wednesday.

In my assembly on Monday I talked the SD boys about a number of aspects to do with

safety. One of the points I stressed was parking and keeping the front of the school

(Nursery, JD and SD) clear of cars. Please could parents also avoid parking on the yellow

lines at the end of Springrove Road as this makes the corners dangerous for crossing.

Our neighbours at No. 64 have also asked that parents do not park across their driveway

or use it for turning. Thank you in advance for your help with this. Please also find

attached a letter on internet safety for SD parents following some recent issues.

Our new water cascade

Thank you Friends! Cake Sale for Children in Need

It tickles!

Dear Parents

Last week the children decorated cupcakes and sold them at the end of the day. I am delighted to say we raised

a fantastic £117 for Children in Need. Thank you so much for your generous donations and well done to our jun-

ior bakers who produced such delicious cakes.

We received a very exciting delivery last week and on opening the enormous boxes we discovered a water

cascade set and some beautiful wooden blocks, which have been bought for us by the Friends of King’s House.

We are so very grateful for these exciting new resources for our playground. The children have been pumping

water from the trough and creating dams and then making paths for it to flow through. The blocks have already

been used to build aeroplanes, trains and trucks. We have already seen some wonderful team work, problem

solving skills and imaginative play, a huge thank to the Friends from all of us at the Nursery.

There were multi coloured footprints all over the Caterpillar floor this week, which had been carefully covered

with paper. This simple activity brought so much joy and the childrens’ faces were a picture of pure delight. They

have been challenging themselves with a wide variety of fine and gross motor activities, including throwing bean

bags through hoops and crawling under and over objects.

It is already feeling Christmassy in the Nursery with Nativity rehearsals in full swing. I watched two little boys in

the stable role play area, both with a doll on their lap feeding them a bottle of milk. “These are baby Jesus twins”

they informed me seriously. Two little girls appeared at the stable door and took a look, “Come on back to the

office“ said one to the other “we have work to do“ and off they trotted to the computer!

Have a lovely weekend. Jane O’Brien

Dear Parents

Prep school life is all about those extra opportunities we create for children to learn and develop

lifelong skills outside the core curriculum. As I look through the photographs we have taken during

the last week I am reminded how lucky our boys are to receive such a broad education. The brilliantly

organised and well-supported cake sale we held in the JD hall, raised £243.70 for Children in Need

and saw boys polishing up their mental arithmetic, working out how many cakes they could buy for a

pound, and gave them an opportunity to do something good to help those less fortunate than

themselves. The two mini-football tournaments for Year 1 and 2 respectively, held on the

immaculate 3G astro pitch down at the sports ground, provided the perfect platform for our youngest

footballers to show off their skills and learn about sportsmanship, teamwork, determination and

resilience. The event was incredibly well supported and we must thank the boys in Year 8 who did a

marvellous job of refereeing for us. The football was swiftly followed by a terrific tea concert after

school on Tuesday, where we heard debut performances from our recorder and string groups, as well

as some inspiring vocal and instrumental renditions from boys in Years 1 to 3. 3M went on to give a

fantastic assembly in French, all about French culture including life at school in France, and a

production of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I did suggest that we should have Saturday morning

school like they do in France, but it didn’t go down too well with the boys, so I think we’ll leave that

one for the time being! Simon Gower

On Saturday the U10 A Team took part in the annual St Paul’s

Rugby Tournament. The boys did themselves proud, not only with

their performances but also their ability to listen and apply the

advice given to them throughout the day. The progress the boys

made in the space of a morning was excellent to see,

given we have only had one full week of rugby at school.

The boys managed to win one game, draw one game and lose

one game before playing St Paul’s in the last game of the day.

Despite the boys at a huge disadvantage physically in this match

the boys showed a great desire to match the opposition,

committing themselves to some big tackles. Technically the boys

were outstanding with lots of passes and offloads on show.

Despite being behind twice in the final game the boys showed

great character and ability to come back and win the game with a

try in the last few seconds from Tom. Congratulations to all the

boys involved to what was a very encouraging start to the rugby season for the Under 10 A Team!

U12s v KCJS It is always difficult to start your season against a school that has been playing since September, but the U12s can be proud

of their performances on Tuesday in their first run out of the season. The C team showed some attacking promise scoring 5

tries, whilst the B team secured a very credible draw with both sides scoring 3 tries. The U12A team roared into action

though with a 9 tries to 1 victory. A great way to start the season and even prompted the opposition staff to comment on

not only what a good performance it was, but also the maturity with which they went about the game.

The U13A team started off their season at the Wellington

College Festival this Wednesday. The boys performed well

on the day and considering they had only had one full

session together as a squad before the festival they

should be very pleased with their efforts. There was a

steady improvement in performance as the day went on,

which was pleasing to see. This culminated with the best

performance of the day coming in the last match against

Lambrook. During the earlier round of matches we had

seen some good individual performances, in fits and

bursts, but it was in this match that the boys

really started to gel more as a team. Having such an early

test in the season helps highlight areas for improvement

and refinement, but there were plenty of very positive

signs that they have the makings of a great team. Well done boys!

U11A at the Wellington Festival - The U11As kicked off their rugby season in fine fashion. Running rugby was

on show throughout the day, with the passing and offloading commented on by many of the spectators and

opposition coaches. There were strong performances against Eagle House, Feltonfleet and a very physical side

from The Beacon, as well as a return of a familiar face in Mr McKinnon when we played Vinehall School too!

The whole squad made huge progress throughout the day and I was especially impressed with the maturity and

decision making of the boys on the field. It will be an exciting season ahead!

Calling all parent singers! We would like to invite all King’s House parents to join the adult choir for our Senior Department Carol Service on Tuesday 12

December at 7pm in St. Matthias Church. We are holding a number of rehearsals on the following dates:

Mon 27 November at 7.30pm / Mon 4 December at 7.30pm / Mon 11 December - rehearsal in church, 5.30pm – 8pm

It would be great if those who sing in the choir can attend a good proportion of these rehearsals but we appreciate that it might

be a bit much to commit to all of them! Please don’t worry about being able to read music or being completely wonderful at

singing – it would be lovely to have as many of you involved as possible.

Chamber Choir on Mondays AND Tuesdays in the run-up to Christmas In order to help them to prepare for their prominent role in the Carol Service, the Chamber Choir will rehearse on both Mondays

and Tuesdays at 8am for the final weeks of term. Rehearsals on Mondays will be in the Music Room.
