Luke Scriptures for LentIn the texts from the gospel of Luke during Lent, we travel with Jesus to Jerusalem. Along the way we experience Jesus’ ministry as he teaches, heals and calls people to follow him. When he reaches Jerusa-lem, he enters the temple and challenges and offends the religious leaders who immediately plot to put him to death. Luke brings us to Jerusalem with some of the most “challenging” stories of Jesus.

Then the prophet Elisha called a member of the company of prophets and said to him, “Gird up your loins; take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead. When you arrive, look there for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi; go in and get him to leave his compan-ions, and take him into an inner chamber. Then take the flask of oil, pour it on his head, and say, ‘Thus says the lord: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and flee; do not linger.”

When Jehu came back to his master’s officers, they said to him, “Is everything all right? Why did that madman come to you?” He answered them, “You know the sort and how they babble.” They said, “Liar! Come on, tell us!” So he said, “This is just what he said to me: ‘Thus says the lord, I anoint you king over Israel.’” Then hurriedly they all took their cloaks and spread them for him on the bare steps; and they blew the trumpet, and proclaimed, “Jehu is king.”

Prayer of tHe day

Leader: As the people spread their coats and palm branches on the ground to welcome Jesus into Jerusalem, so we welcome him into our lives this morning. All: King of Glory, King of Peace, Humble King, reign in our hearts and lives this day and all days, that we might praise your holy name. Amen. Let it be so.

GosPel Luke 19:28-40 All: Glory to you, O Lord.

After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Beth-phage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has nev-er been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’” So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They said, “The Lord needs it.” Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glo-ry in the highest heaven!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”All: Praise to you, O Christ.

Here might I stay and sing--- no story so divine!

Never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine.

This is my friend, in whose sweet praiseI all my days could gladly spend!I all my days could gladly spend!

Last night I lay a sleeping there came a dream so fairI stood in old Jerusalem, beside the temple thereI heard the children singing and ever as they sang

I thought the voice of Angels from Heaven in answer rang

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Lift up your gates and sing.Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King!

And once again the scene was changed, new earth there seemed to be.I saw the Holy City beside the tideless sea.

The light of God was on its streets, the gates were open wide. And all who would might enter and no one was denied.

No need of moon or stars by night or sun to shine by day.It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Lift up your gates and sing.Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna for evermore!
