From Father Brian’s Desk Mothers’ Day

This weekend we celebrate Mothers’ Day. It is a time to recognize all of those women who dedicate their time in helping our children grow in gener-osity, faith and love. Here is a special blessing for those women we honor this day:

Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strength-ened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord.

On behalf of the parishioners of St. Alphonsus, I would like to con-gratulate all of our Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunts and Godmothers for their strength, courage and care!

First Eucharist

On Saturday, April 29th, 57 of our 2nd Grade students from our St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick Catholic School and our St. Alphonsus Religious Ed-ucation program received the Sacrament of First Eucharist. I would like to thank Sharon Kostes, Paul Malak and Joe Martorano for their dedication and patience in assisting our young students practice for the big day.

I would like to thank our St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School Principal, Renee Payne, our Director of Religious Education, Kevin Cody, our 2nd Grade school teacher, Mrs. Teri Lerch and our 2nd Grade Religious Education Catechists, Vivian Brueckmann, Rosemary Christine, Chris Ihde, Patti Loisi and our Catechist Aides: Dana Lepczynski, Ralph Loisi and Lisa Sar-no for their dedication in preparing our young ones for this wonderful sacra-ment. On behalf of the parishioners of St. Alphonsus, I would like to congrat-ulate all of our 2nd Grade students as they continue on their journey of faith!

Choir News

On Sunday, April 30th, our St. Alphonsus Church Choir participated in the St. Vincent DePaul “Church Choir Competition” at Drury Lane in Oak-brook, IL. I was able to stop in and witness our choir perform two beautiful songs that impressed many people in attendance. I am pleased to announce that our St. Alphonsus Choir received 2nd Place in the competition! Congratu-lations to Joe Martorano, our St. Alphonsus Choir and musicians for their dedication to their art. We are so pleased to have you lead our parish commu-nity in music and song!

Tri-Parish Weekday Morning Mass

In keeping with the tradition that began a few years ago, the Catholic Communities of St. Alphonsus, Ss. Cyril & Methodius and St. Patrick will move to a Tri-Parish Weekday Morning Mass schedule starting Wednesday, June 1st and concluding on August 31st. One parish will serve as the “host parish” for the 7:30 a.m. Morning Mass (Monday – Saturday). The Mass intentions will be collected from each parish and celebrated together by the priest assigned to that specific Mass.

St. Alphonsus Church will host the first month of the Tri-Parish Week-day Masses in the church beginning on Thursday, June 1st and concluding on Friday, June 30th. From there the Tri-Parish Mass will travel to Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church for the month of July and then move to St. Patrick Church for the month of August. The complete summer schedule will continue to be posted in the bulletin for the next few weeks.

THE WAY

Today we sense the apostles’ trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that he is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is the way. We can take comfort in the Lord’s promise that he is going to his Father’s house to prepare a place for us, his chosen people who have been called out of dark- ness into God’s wonderful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us remember that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. With Christ our light as the beacon lighting our way, let us march toward the glory of Pentecost. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Welcome Guests and Visitors . . We’re so glad that you’re here and invite you to join us in thanksgiving for God’s action in our lives. Our goal is to provide a spiritual home where all are welcome, where the healing, reconciling, liber-ating love of God flows through us to all people. In this way, we believe that the Church is the sacrament of God’s sav-ing presence in the world.

“Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult (the Mass does not end until the final blessing). Worship reverently enough not to distract. And dress proudly enough not to offend.”

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

Reflecting on God’s Word

Over the years several television shows have focused on rebuilding and reshaping houses. For over thirty years PBS’s This Old House has offered tips on repairing homes. More recently, Extreme Makeover takes a team into someone’s home and transforms it to meet the serious needs of its occupants, often dealing with health or disability issues or trying to serve the larger community in some way.

From the beginning the church has been imagined as a house of living stones, built on Jesus Christ, a dwelling place where people come for shelter and sustenance, where they can set down their burdens and find comfort and consolation before being sent back out in the world to make it a better place to live.

The risen Christ is truly one who offers an “extreme makeover.” He can be trusted to shape us into a dwelling place where the Spirit of the Lord takes up permanent residence, bringing gifts to benefit the world. From the beginning there have been challenges for those who form the church, and an ongoing need for renovation to meet the needs of the time.

Our efforts to make the church a home where love, mercy, justice, and peace will be found should lead us to build more firmly on Jesus our cornerstone. When the time comes, the home he promised to prepare for us and take us to should be easily recognizable. It should not be that much different from the church we have been living in all our lives. —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright © 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Living God’s Word

We pray the Lord to give us confidence to trust in his word that he has gone to prepare a permanent dwelling place for us,

where we will be with him and all those who have gone ahead of us. We pray that this assurance may strengthen us to live as if we were already there.

Marian Prayer Group

Would you like to spend some time with fellow parishioners in prayer to our Blessed Mother? Come join us on Thursday evenings during the month of May. We meet in the chapel from 6 pm – 7 pm to pray the rosary, the devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help and listen to readings about the Fatima apparitions. This May marks 100 years since our Blessed Mother appeared at Fatima. Let’s give special honor to Mary, the Mother of God, during her month of May.

A CELEBRATION

OF MARY

IN SONG

Next Sunday, May 21st at 4:00 PM, the St. Alphonsus Music Ministry will con-clude the choir season with a beautiful program of

songs and reflections on the Blessed Mother. The music is taken from the choir’s repertoire of songs they have sung and come to love over the past several years.

The musical program will be woven around messages received by the visionaries of Medugorje with regard to the Glorious Mysteries of the rosary. We hope you can join us as we sing and crown “Our Lady” Mother of all.

Cardinal Blasé J. Cupich will preside over this special Mass where couples will rejoice in their 50th wed-ding anniversary. More information regarding the registration process will be released next month. We look forward to celebrating this very special Mass with Jubilarian couples.

The Department of Parish Vitality and Mission is happy to announce that the annual Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, September 17th, at 2:45 pm at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street, Chicago.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION — NINE MONTHS OLD

Hi. My time in my Mommy’s womb is coming to an end. I will be born soon! I’ve been listening to all sorts of things going on in the world and I can’t wait to see them with my own eyes. I especially can’t wait to meet my Mommy and Daddy. They are so wonderful! During this past month I gained half a pound a week to prepare for my birth. The bones in my head are soft and flexible so I’ll be safe during my journey down the birth canal. Of the 45 generations of cell division that occur before adulthood, 41 have already taken place.(Four will come during my adolescence.) In fact 90% of my development has already taken place. That’s a lot of growing. As you can see, I’ve been very busy in here. Thank you so much for being my spiritual parent and supporting me during this time. You don’t know who I am and I don’t know who you are, but God knows who we are. I hope we meet some-day . May God bless you.

Spiritual Adoption

Thank you for your continued prayer for the baby you spiritually adopted in August. Your prayers have supported unborn babies in their mothers’ wombs. To mark the end of our year of prayer and to give materi-al support to the mothers in need, the Respect Life Group will host a baby shower on the weekend of May 20th/21st. Gifts donated through the baby shower will be given to Waterleaf Women’s Center in Aurora. Though Waterleaf is grateful for all donations, items especially needed at this time are: small stuffed animals, onesies, bibs, blankets, wipes and diapers of all sizes. Every mother in need of assistance is given a package of neces-sary items and a small stuffed animal for her baby. Please place your unwrapped gift in the baby shower box in the back of church. Thank you for your prayer and for any baby shower gifts you generously donate to our baby shower on May 20th and 21st.

Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland by purchasing flowers for your wife, moth-er, grandmother, or other special women in your life.

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

TO TEND OUR GARDEN

We would like to get our garden going again this year but need more volunteers to plant and tend to our plants. Due to the generosity of Tim Mathias and a group of fellow Knights of Columbus, our garden is being trans-formed into a raised bed garden. It will make gardening easier and more efficient. If you enjoy gardening and/or watering and would like to be a part of the garden pro-ject, please call Linda in the Parish Office (630-257-2414), email at [email protected] or talk to her before or after Masses. The fruits of our garden are donated to the Lemont Food Pantry. Thanks so much!

Let’s Fill the Shelves. . . Food Pantry Update Thank you for your continued support of our local food pantry. As part of a service project, the St. Al’s Women’s Club will be featuring a “product of the month”. This item will be a special request from the pantry for an item that

is needed most. For May we will collect: “baking items including flour, sugar, oil, cake mixes and frosting.” Any item you are able to give is gratefully accepted. The staples you provide are also necessary.

Your kindness and generosity are very much appreciated.
