On this federal holiday, also known as Independence Day, marking the Colonies’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, we thought it would be appropriate to share some fun facts about this historic day.

1. Congress made Independence Day an official unpaid holiday for federal employees in 1870. In 1938, Congress changed Independ-ence Day to a paid federal holiday.

2. Only John Hancock actually signed the Declaration of Independ-ence on July 4, 1776. All the others signed later.

3. In 1776, there were 2.5 million people living in the new nation. Today the population of the U.S.A. is 316 million.

4. The average age of the Signers of the Declaration of Independ-ence was 45. The youngest was Thomas Lynch, Jr (27) of South Carolina. The oldest delegate was Benjamin Franklin (70) of Penn-sylvania. The lead author of The Declaration, Thomas Jefferson, was 33.

5. One out of eight signers of the Declaration of Independence were educated at Harvard (7 total).

6. The only two signers of the Declaration of Independence who later served as President of the United States were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

7. The stars on the original American flag were in a circle so all the Colonies would appear equal.

8. The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadel-phia on July 8, 1776. This was also the day that the Declaration of Independence was first read in public after people were summoned by the ringing of the Liberty Bell.

9. The White House held its first 4th July party in 1801.

10. President John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe all died on the Fourth. Adams and Jefferson (both signed the Declara-tion) died on the same day within hours of each other in 1826.

11. Benjamin Franklin proposed the turkey as the national bird but was overruled by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who recom-mended the bald eagle.

12. Every 4th of July the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped (not actually rung) thirteen times in honor of the original thirteen colo-nies.

LIFE ON THE KINGDOM ROAD

As I sit here in my new home surrounded by boxes I am experiencing many emotions. It’s been a long couple of

weeks packing and unpacking, travelling back and forth to Warren, and generally wearing myself out. But as I sit

here, there is a great sense of anticipation and excitement, too.

I know without a doubt that there is unlimited potential in what God can do here at KUMC. The amazing thing is

that we get to participate in whatever God has planned! I have no idea what that is yet, but I get excited thinking

about where we are headed. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD,

“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a fu-

ture.” (Jeremiah 289:11, NIV)

I don’t know you yet. However, that’s about to change. In the weeks ahead I am going to try and meet with as

many of you as possible. I want to hear your stories, your hopes, and your dreams for KUMC. Beginning July 5th

I will try to schedule time each day to meet with at least one of you. Please be patient if you’re not first – I prom-

ise you’ll get time with me! In the meantime, if you need to reach me immediately, please feel free to call my cell

phone. My number is 814-602-3212. I have that with me 24/7, and I will do my best to make myself available to

you. Let me change gears here, though…

While we may not know you yet, my wife (Danielle) and I are extremely grateful for what you’ve already done

for us. We arrived at the parsonage last week to find a bathroom that was gutted to the studs and ready for a total

makeover. It was finished today and it is beautiful! We are so happy to be part of a church family that seeks to

care for their pastor. After we get settled in and Danielle arrives (after finishing her summer session at The Uni-

versity of Pittsburgh at Bradford in mid August) we will have an open house so you can see for yourself where

your investment has gone. You will be very pleased!

We hope to see you this weekend in worship. Danielle will be able to be with us this week, so you’ll meet both of

us.

As I close, please know that I am already praying for you. I would humbly ask that you do the same for my family.

In His Service,

Rich
