Kindergarten-2nd

August 9-10, 2014

Psalm 139:13-14

Know God’s Word

God made you exactly the way he wants you to be.

Connect Time (20 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (25 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together.

Remember, our goal for August is this: to prepare kids for the school year by memorizing one verse per week. We’ll play games and do activities to make memorizing more fun.

As kids leave, remind them to tell their parents how God made them!

Today will focus on helping kids learn Psalm 139:13-14 so that they can grasp how truly precious they are to God.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear. SELF-SCULPTURES

• Give each kid a clump of Play-Dough. • Ask them to sculpt themselves. • As kids sculpt, ask them about their creations. • Comment on how different each sculpture looks and have kids look around to see

the differences. • Once most kids have arrived, ask kids to share the best/worst parts of their

week. *Please make sure to collect all Play-Dough from kids after Connect Time and put it away for use in other services. If you have extra time, remind them of your expectations for their behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) understand why we memorize Bible verses, (2) recall Psalm 139:13-14 and (3) recognize that God crafted them with great care. Why? We are all different. But God made us exactly the way he wants us to be! Tip: There are certain things we can (and should) change about ourselves. Just because we’re wonderfully made doesn’t mean we’re all perfect. In fact, the opposite is true. Feel free to add this layer to the discussion. But for the younger kids (K2), the main emphasis is on celebrating how loved they are by God.

REVIEW AND DIG DEEPER 1. Why do you think God made us each different? 2. Have you ever felt frustrated about how you were made? Or has anybody made fun

of something about you? Tell us about it if you feel comfortable. (This would be a great chance for you to tell kids about a personal experience.)

3. Read Psalm 139:13-14 in the Bible (let kids see you look it up). Then ask: What does this verse teach us about how we are made?

4. Why is it important to remember God’s truth in verses like this? 5. Does anybody remember the verse we said back and forth? (Lead kids in repeating

Psalm 139:14 “How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I praise you for that.”) CREATE SELF-PORTRAITS

• Give kids a body template • Then let them use the markers, 2 eye stickers, gluesticks, and yarn, to create

themselves (glue sticks are provided). • They can draw pictures to represent things they like too. • Keep practicing the verse!

*Pray together, thanking God for making each kid amazing and wonderful. Extra time? Play the game from Large Group (Who Says It Best) and make up your own silly voices. You can even let kids choose voices! Or, grab the “God Loves You” book by Kathy Bostrom. There is only one or two copies per room, since not all small groups will have time/interest in looking at it. If multiple small groups do have interest, just share and pass it around (it’s very short). The end of each page says “God loves you just as you are.” Have kids say it aloud with you and look for things they have in common with the characters in the story!

Today’s goal is to arm kids with truth as they prepare to go to school and face bullies and other kids who may say hurtful things.

We’re playing another memorization game. To mix things up, kids will recite the verse in different voices. Use whatever crazy voices you think sound the most fun!

*Play intro music. Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids’ Club. It’s great to see you. I loved the sculptures you guys made of yourselves. Those looked like so much fun. And you know what I noticed? Every single one of them was different. Why do you guys think all your sculptures were so different? (Let kids respond.) You know what? That reminds me of a garden… (show picture of a garden). Lately I have been looking outside and I see all kinds of different flowers and trees. What do you think it would be like if every tree/flower were the same? (Let kids respond.) Why do you think God chose to create so many different types of trees and flowers? (Let kids respond.) INTRO TO VERSE: PSALM 139:13-14: Let’s look at a verse that will help us answer these questions… Psalm 139:13-14 You created the deepest parts of my being. You put me together inside my mother’s body. How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I praise you for that. What you have done is wonderful. I know that very well. Hmm, that verse makes me think that God created me a special way on purpose! He wanted me to look just how I look, act how I act, love the things that I love… and you know what? He LOVES me this way. It was on purpose and not an accident! He created me just the way he wants me to be—and this verse tells me that how he made me is wonderful!

KNOWING WE ARE SPECIAL IS IMPORTANT That is true for each of you. Each and every one of you are wonderfully made. And you were made exactly that way on purpose. Wow! That is cool to think about and it makes me feel really good to know that God loves me exactly THIS way. In fact, he started making us before we were even born. God knows us all so well and He loves us so much. He even knows every hair on our heads and every freckle on our faces. OK, now close your eyes for a second. In your head, think of ONE of the many special ways God made you. Maybe you have brown hair or blue eyes. Maybe you like to run or draw. Maybe you can rub your head and pat you tummy at the same time. Think of one special thing about you. When you’ve got it, look up at me. (Let kids think.) Now everybody, stand up! (Let kids stand.) I want you to find one other person and tell them the ONE special thing you thought of just now. Ready? Go! (Let kids discuss. Then let a few kids share. After each one, affirm that God made them that way on purpose.) SOMETIMES PEOPLE DON’T LIKE US You know what though? Sometimes, people are rude to us about how we’re made. Sometimes they don’t treat us as if we’re special. Sometimes, we have things about ourselves we want to change. Let’s take a minute and check out our summer movie again, Monsters University. In this movie, the BEST way a monster can be made is big and scary. But the main character Mike Wazowski and his team at Monsters University don’t look big and scary. They look little and cute. And they get made fun of for it. As you watch the clip, imagine how they might be feeling. Video: Monsters University_clip 2 Wow, how do you think those monsters felt when they got made fun of? (Let kids share.) Yeah, I bet they did. It doesn’t feel good when people make fun of who we are. In the movie, every monster is different and some of them aren’t scary… they all have their own strengths and talents. In the real world, that is true too! Each of us is different. But every one of you has talents and traits that make you special. And everything about you was planned by God, who knew what you would be like before you were even born. LET’S MEMORIZE Sometimes, if people make fun of us, or if we’re not big enough to do something we want to do, we forget that God made us special. So this month, we’re learning verses to help us remember God’s truth! Does anyone know/remember why we memorize Bible verses? (Let kids respond.) That’s right! The Bible is God’s word, and God tells us that when we remember his truth and keep it in our hearts, it will help us follow him. So today, we’re going to learn another verse. Psalm 139:14 How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I praise you for that.

Page 7: K2 081014 Monsters University Week 2 IN PROCESS REVIEWED …49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · the BEST way a monster can be made is big and scary

Can we say that together? (Lead kids in repeating the whole thing). Great job! Now, we’re going to do something a little different to really learn this verse. I’m going to split you guys into two teams. (Split the room into two. Have kids physically move to different sides.) OK, you guys (point to one side) are going to say, “How you made me is amazing and wonderful.” Can I hear you practice that? (Lead kids in saying: How you made me is amazing and wonderful). You guys are good! One more time: How I made you is amazing and wonderful. You got it! And you guys (point to other side) are going to say: “I praise you for that.” Can I hear you practice? (Lead kids in saying: I praise you for that!) Wonderful! And one more time: I praise you for that! Wow, you guys are ready too. GAME: WHO SAYS IT BEST Awesome! So now, we’re going to have a little friendly competition called “Who Says It Best.” I’m going to ask you to say the verse in a really silly, crazy way…and then we’ll see who does it best. First, I want you to use your best surfer dude voice (or make up an alternate voice, like low voice, high voice, etc.) I’m going to point to you guys (one side) and you say, “How you made me is amazing and wonderful” and then I’m going to point to you guys (other side) and you’ll say, “I praise you for that!” First, we’ll practice our surfer dude voices together by saying “Psalm 139:14” (model the voice) You ready? (use your surfer dude voice to lead them): “Psalm 139:14.” Nice! OK, let’s see who says it best! (Point to one side and let them say “How you made me is amazing and wonderful”; point to the other side and let them say “I praise you for that”) Wow, you guys BOTH did so well, it’s hard to pick…let’s try another. How about your best…underwater voice? (You can make this voice by flicking your lips with one finger as you talk; or make an old grandma voice or high or low voice, etc.) Again, we’ll practice our underwater voices together by saying “Psalm 139:14” Now, your turn: (use your underwater voice to lead them): “Psalm 139:14.” Oh yeah, you guys are definitely ready. (Point to one side and let them say “How you made me is amazing and wonderful”; point to the other side and let them say “I praise you for that”) Wow, you guys BOTH did so well, let me hear you ONE. MORE. TIME. (Point to one side and let them say “How you made me is amazing and wonderful”; point to the other side and let them say “I praise you for that.”) Wow, I’m gonna have to call this one a tie! But hopefully, you guys are starting to get these words in your head. Because anytime somebody treats you badly or you wish something about you was different, you can say these words to yourself and remember that God made you exactly the way he wants you to be!

WORSHIP Now we’re going to listen to a song all about how God made us exactly how he wants us to be. As you listen, ask God if there’s anything he wants to say to you. Sometimes God speaks to us by putting a thought in our heads, maybe words or even a picture. Let’s all ask God to speak to us now and remind us of how special we are to him. Music Video: Who I Am This next song is all about how we’re God’s because he made us! Music Video: I’m Yours PRAY Ask somebody to come and thank God for making us exactly the way he wants us to be.
