As kids leave, ask them why they tore up their paper and put it together in a new design!

Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together.

Kids who are more “challenging” may not hear very often that someone is glad to see them, so make sure to intentionally connect with them. Say their name, tell them you’re glad to see them, and ask them about the best or worst part of their day!

The last few weeks we’ve been talking about Creation and God’s ultimate goodness. This week will have a change in tone as we introduce the Fall and help kids understand why sin entered the world. Luckily, this story ends with good news: God has a rescue plan to save us from all our wrong choices!

We need a rescuer.Genesis 3

Movie Unit: The FallJuly 16-17, 2016

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear.

PAPER PASSING● Divide kids into small groups.● Give each kid one piece of paper and a marker.● Give kids about 5 minutes to create something with their paper. It could be a

drawing, a paper airplane, a sculpture, etc.● After time is up, have kids pass their paper to the person on their right.● Now tell kids we’re going to do something “destructive”:

○ You (the leader) will give the group a command to do with the paper they just received (For example, tearthe paper, or scribble on it.)

○ Then, after they’ve all done the command, you’ll tell the group to pass the paper to the person on their right.

○ You will continue to give commands, and after each command, tell them to pass the paper to the person on their right.

○ The paper will continue to get more and more “destroyed” with each pass!● Here’s a list of commands to give kids:

○ Make a tiny tear in one corner○ Scribble on the paper for 5 seconds○ Stand up and stomp on the paper○ Sit on the paper○ Fold the paper in half○ Tear the paper again in another corner○ Draw a big “X” across the paper○ Crumple the paper up and then spread it out smooth again○ Fold up the paper and throw it somewhere (then go get it back)○ Make a big tear in the paper○ Draw lots of lines all over the paper○ Poke a hole through the paper○ Rub the paper across your arms like a washcloth○ Fold the paper up as many times as you can

TALK ABOUT IT● How did it feel to have someone else “destroy” your creation?● Have you ever broken something that was really important?

Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

Page 3: review the video and songs together. Genesis 3 We need a ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · Remind kids that no matter how much we mess up, God

Goal: Kids will (1) recognize that God created a perfect world, (2) understand that people made wrong choices and needed a rescuer, and (3) identify how God made a rescue plan to save us from all the wrong things in the world.

Why? To understand why God would send us a rescuer, we have to grasp the reality of sin. That means understanding that we made a choice to disobey and distance ourselves from God. Fortunately, we don’t have to stay separated, because God has a rescue plan!

Tip: Some kids might not want to tear up their paper, and that’s okay!

REVIEW THE STORY1. How did sin first come into the world? (Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the

fruit he told them not to eat.)2. What happened after Adam and Eve made the choice to disobey God? (They lied,

they were ashamed and realized they were naked; they hid from God.)3. How has the world become broken because of all our wrong choices? (Things like

sadness, sickness, anger, death, fighting, bad choices, etc.)4. Is there a mistake you keep making over and over, even if you are tired of making it?5. What did God decide to do to rescue us from these mistakes? (He sent his son

Jesus to rescue us from all the wrong things in the world.)6. Did God reveal anything to you when you repented in Large Group? How do you

think He felt when you did that? (If someone doesn’t have an answer, encourage him/her to keep listening for God this week.)

MAKE IT PERSONAL● Give each kid one pattern page. Set out markers.● Let kids decorate and color the front of the patterned paper for about 5 minutes.● After 5 minutes, tell kids to wrap up their coloring and think of one thing they want to

repent of. It can be what they thought about in Large Group, or something different. Once they’ve thought of it, they should write it down on the back of the patterned paper.

● SAY: “This design is like US before we made wrong choices and needed to be rescued.”

● Next, have kids tear up their paper into several pieces.

(Continued on next page.)

● SAY: “We’re broken when we make wrong choices, but God puts up back together again and makes us whole when we accept his rescue!”

● Have kids make a new art work using their torn up pieces. Set out glue sticks and give each kid one piece of colored paper. Have them rearrange their torn up pieces by gluing them into a new design on top of the colored paper.

● Remind kids that no matter how much we mess up, God still loves us and wants to rescue us.

Extra time? Give kids a piece of copy paper and have them play the Connect Time game again! This time, give them some different rules, like “You can only hold the paper in one hand,” or “You can only walk backwards.”

WELCOME AND INTRO

Main Goal: Review Connect Time and introduce the lesson.

Notes:

Today’s lesson will initially feel a bit heavier than usual, and that’s OK. We want kids to grasp the meaning of sin and how much we need a rescuer. Just make sure to balance it with the excitement and celebration of knowing God has a rescue plan for us!

Here’s a link to a video we’ll be watching today!

God’s Story / The Fall:https://vimeo.com/49016940

*Click to play intro music.● Welcome: Hey everybody! I’m so glad you came to Kids’

Club today. How are you? (Let kids respond.)● Ask: Did you have fun destroying each other’s papers in

that Connect Time game? (Let kids respond.) ● Say: Yep, it can be fun to destroy things sometimes,

especially if you didn’t make the creation! But was it a little sad to see your own unique creation get ruined by other people? (Let kids respond.) Probably.

● Ask: What did your paper look like by the end of the game? Did it look different than the crisp, straight piece of paper you had at the beginning? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: Yeah, it probably got pretty beat up. It was torn, crumpled, bent, folded, sat on, scribbled on, etc.

● Ask: Did anybody’s paper look absolutely PERFECT by the end of the game? Did it look exactly the same as when we started? (Let kids respond.) I doubt it! I’m pretty sure no one’s paper looked perfect like it did in the beginning.

● Say: Today we’re going to talk about something else that started out perfect: our world! When God first created it, it was perfect. There was nothing wrong with it. But today we’re going to see how something happened to change that. Just like the papers in our game, it didn’t stay perfect.

Page 6: review the video and songs together. Genesis 3 We need a ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · Remind kids that no matter how much we mess up, God

A PERFECT WORLD

Main Goal: Recognize that God created a perfect and good world.

Notes:

● Say: We’ve been talking a lot about all the things God created when he first made the world. Can you call out some of those things right now? (Let several kids respond.) Yep, God made all of that stuff! And it was GOOD. There was nothing wrong. There was no sickness, or sadness, or even death.

● Ask: When God created US, were we good and perfect too, just like the rest of his creation? (Let kids respond.) Yep, God made us EXACTLY as he wanted us - he made us like him! Do you remember the first two people he created? (Let kids respond.) That’s right, Adam and Eve.

● Say: They got to be really close to God, and spend a lot of time with him. There was nothing that separated them. Unfortunately, something happened to change all that.

A BROKEN WORLD

Main Goal: Understand why our perfect world became broken.

Notes:

● Ask: Have you ever broken something? What was it? Maybe a plate or even one of your bones? (Let a few kids respond.) Yep, we’ve probably all broken something.

● Say: Just like something has to happen to break a bone, something happened to make the world broken too. We’re going to watch a video to help us understand what happened. As you watch, pay close attention to WHY our perfect home became imperfect.

● Video: God’s Story / The Fall● Ask: Who can tell me what happened to cause our world

to become broken? (Let kids respond.) ● Say: Yep, Adam and Eve made a choice to disobey God.

God loved them, and knew what was best for them, so he told them not to eat the fruit. But they decided to eat it anyway. They thought they knew better than God. And because they made that choice, sin entered the world.

● Say: We sin when we make wrong choices. It’s when we disobey God and step outside of the perfect plan he has for us. When Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they sinned for the very first time. And from that day forward, everyone else sinned too, including us.

● Ask: What are some of the things that have entered our world because of sin? What kinds of things are broken now? (Let several kids respond with varying answers.)

WHAT IS SIN?

Main Goal: Understand what sin is, and how it affects us.

Notes:

Page 7: review the video and songs together. Genesis 3 We need a ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · Remind kids that no matter how much we mess up, God

WHAT IS SIN?

Main Goal: Understand what sin is, and how it affects us.

Notes:

● Say: Yep, those are all great examples. Because of sin, we have pain, sickness, sadness, and death. God never wanted these things to be a part of our perfect home, but because we disobeyed him, now they are.

● Say: This all probably seems pretty sad, but I promise there’s a great ending to the story! Before we talk about that though, let’s talk about how we sometimes try and fix things on our own.

WE CAN’T RESCUE OURSELVES

Main Goal: Use a clip from Home Alone to understand that we can’t fix sin all by ourselves; we need a rescuer!

Notes:

● Say: While we can do little things to make the world better, there’s nothing we can do to fix it on our own. We can’t ever be perfect, so we need a rescuer that IS perfect, like Jesus. Someone who can make things right again.

● Say: There’s a movie called Home Alone where a kid accidentally gets left at home all by himself, while his family goes on vacation! The kid, Kevin, does a pretty good job of outsmarting the burglars who want to break into his house…until they catch him! Take a look at what happens; as you watch, see if there’s anything he can do to save himself all on his own, without any help.

● Video: Home Alone / Kevin and the Burglars● Ask: So what happened at the end; was Kevin able to

save himself all on his own? (Let kids respond.) ● Say: Nope! He needed help. He couldn’t rescue himself in

the end. And we’re the same! We need a rescuer too.

● Say: Now, because we ALL make wrong choices, and we cause the world to be imperfect, we deserve punishment. And if we didn’t have a rescuer, we would have to take the punishment ourselves. Every single one of us.

● Say: The good news is that even though we deserve punishment, and even though we can never be perfect, God WANTS to rescue us, and he has an amazing rescue plan to make that happen! He sent his own son, Jesus, to die and take the punishment for all the wrong things in the world. He took the punishment for our sins, so that we don’t have to.

● Ask: How do you think God feels about us, if he’s willing to send his son to rescue us like that? (Let a few kids respond.) You’re right, He LOVES us. No matter how much we mess up and make wrong choices, He loves us completely, and has good plans for us.

GOD HAS A RESCUE PLAN

Main Goal: Understand that God loves us and sent his son Jesus to rescue us from all the wrong things in the world.

Notes:

Page 8: review the video and songs together. Genesis 3 We need a ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · Remind kids that no matter how much we mess up, God

● Say: Let’s look at a verse that we’ve been learning the last few weeks. It’s all about how God has amazing things planned for us, even though we make wrong choices and disobey him sometimes. Let’s read it together:

● Slide: Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

● Ask: When we make mistakes and mess up, does God stop loving us? (Let kids respond.) No way! When we decide that we know better than God, does he stop loving us? (Let kids respond.) Nope. God loves us no matter what, and he ALWAYS wants us to go to him when we need to be rescued.

GOD WILL ALWAYS LOVE US

Main Goal: Read Romans 8:28 and understand that God loves us no matter what.

Notes:

RESPONSE TIME

Main Goal: Allow kids to actively respond through repentance.

Notes:

● Ask: Even though God loves us no matter what, should we keep making the same wrong choices over and over again? (Let kids respond.) No. There’s something else we can do. We can repent.

● Say: When we repent, it means we tell God that we’re sorry for making a wrong choice, for sinning. Then we turn away from our sin and obey God instead. Just because we’ve made a wrong choice in the past, doesn’t mean we have to keep making that choice. We can turn away from it at any time!

● Ask: It’s like if you lied to your parents, what could you do the next time you see them? (Let kids respond.) Yep, you could tell them the truth, and ask for forgiveness. If you’ve treated someone badly in the past, what could you do from now on? (Let kids respond.) Yes, you can start over and say sorry, and then treat them with kindness from here on out.

● Say: Let’s watch a short video to help us understand repentance a bit more. As you watch, think about a specific wrong choice you’ve made recently, and ask God to help you repent and turn away from it.

● Video: Take a Minute / Repentance ● Say: Repenting doesn’t just mean you say “sorry”. It

means you turn away from the wrong choice, and do the right thing instead. (Now wrap up and give kids a personal example of something you want to repent of, or something you’ve repented of in the past.)

WRAP UP AND WORSHIP

Main Goal: Close the lesson with prayer and worship.

Notes:

● Say: Now let’s pray, and ask God to help us realize when we need to repent, so that we be closer to him and accept his rescue!

● Pray: God, we live in a broken world. But we want to accept your rescue, and be close to you again. Please help us to repent, and turn away from wrong choices. Amen!

● Set up worship: It’s time to worship! We’re going to thank God for rescuing us, and show him how much we love him.

● Music Video: More Like You Are● Music Video: I’m Yours
