PARISH HISTORY

During the early 1900's, a petition by the Catholics of the south and west shores of Pewaukee Lake to the chancery resulted in a priest being assigned to offer Sunday Mass. On Sunday, June 30, 1918, Fr. Eugene Rudge celebrated the first Mass at the Auer Park home of Mary Siegfried, with 46 worshipers.

Mission Church...

1920 A chapel costing $1,100 is built and paid for in two weeks at the southwest corner of Angela Road and Louis Avenue. First Baptism: Ruth Jacqueline Auer, July 15, 1923. First Wedding: Walter Schinz & Margaret Siegfried, June 21, 1923. First Communion:

Maria Anna Wilhelm, December 25, 1935.

1936 Additional land is purchased, a basement is excavated,

and the building is moved 150 feet and enlarged.

1943 Congregation is assured of Mass on winter Sundays when Fr. Claude Zens makes his home in Auer Park.

From Mission to Parish Status

1955 A decree issued by Archbishop Albert G. Meyer raised St. Anthony on the Lake from mission to parish status. 1956 A 12 acre tract of land on the corner of Highway SS and Oakton

Road is purchased.

1957 Ground is broken for a school building; building for rectory moved to property.

1959 A convent with living quarters for six sisters is completed.

1962 The first eighth grade class graduated.

1963 Auer Park church no longer large enough.

The lower level school hall now used for church services.

1964 Parish voted to return the school to the original six grades.

1967 Fr. Linus Schmelzer is appointed pastor.

1968 First parish festival held on the last Sunday in June, 50th Anniversary as Mission Church.

1970 St. Anthony’s Athletic Association reorganized from the Holy Name Society. 1972 First meeting of St. Anthony’s Parish Council.

High School CCD program launched.

1973 Expansion of school, addition of gym, installation of pews,

carpeting in church.

1991 Two room kindergarten added.

1993 Long range plan commissioned for new church building.

1994 Fr. Tom Venne is appointed new pastor, school is updated.

Convent converted to parish center, rectory updated.

1995 Family Program begins, St Vincent de Paul meal program began, youth attend their first National Catholic Youth Conference.

1996 Capital Fund Appeal for new church, first Summer Bible Camp.

1997 Sister Parish relationship with Peru begins,

First teen Mission Trip to South Dakota.

1998 Contractors hired, Blessing of the Site (Aug.30),

new church construction begins.

1999 Dedication of new Church (Sept. 5) – Archbishop Weakland,

cornerstone and time capsule placed in front pillar of church.

2002 Blessing of completed Fellowship Hall, Parish Kitchen, CF meeting rooms & Child Care, remodeling of school classrooms (Oct 1)

with Archbishop Dolan.

2003 School reinstates 7th & 8th grade.

2004 Fr. Tom Venne “retires.” Parish welcomes Fr. Joe Hornacek as pastor.

2005 Community celebrates Golden Jubilee as a Parish, introduces

New Mission Statement: LIVE the Gospel of Jesus Christ, COMMIT to worship and lifelong faith formation, SERVE others in need.

2008 Dedication of “Tree of Life” Cross at church entrance, sculpture by Dave Wanner.

2009 Purchased Lakeview Lanes Bowling Alley for future expansion.

2010 Fr. Joe Hornacek “retires” and parish welcomes Fr. Tony Zimmer.

2011 Annual Parish Mission trip to sister parish in Peru with Fr. Joe Uhen, Fr. Tom Venne, Fr. Joe Hornacek and Fr. Tony Zimmer all participat-ing together for the first and only time.

Angel of Promise designed by Dave Wanner shipped in container to sister parish in Peru, duplicate commissioned for the narthex.

2012 Parish wide support given to move forward with building project to enlarge school and parish facilities.

2013 Parish begins “Give From Your Heart” Capital Campaign and raises significant pledges toward building project.

2014 Rectory taken down, construction begins for new offices, classrooms, Parish Activity Center, Parish Life Center.

2014 Crucifix installed in Church. Sculpture by Dave Wanner.

2015 Dedication of new additions, Celebration Mass (Aug. 29)- Bishop Sklba, corner stone and time capsule placed in pillar in front pillar of school.

2015 School added K4 Class.

2016 School added K3 Class, acquired original stained glass windows from first Mission Church.

2017 Installed 7-refurbished original stained glass windows to open year-

long preparation and celebration of our 100th year Anniversary.

Song is commissioned to celebrate the 100th anniversary, with composer Brian McLinden: The Windows of This Living Church.

Gracious and loving God,

we your children humbly ask your blessing upon us

as we celebrate the 100th anniversary

of the founding of St. Anthony on the Lake Parish.

Through the years, you have shaped us into a community

where we have responded to the call to

LIVE the Gospel of Jesus Christ,

SEEK the lost,

COMMIT to worship and life-long formation,

and to SERVE others in need.

We offer you praise and thanks

for the many who came before us,

who by word and example,

have inspired us with their faith, love, and charity,

to seek the lost,

and to bring all people into your family, the Church.

Rooted in your Holy Spirit,
