Gospel is grace, and grace is a gift. You don’t earn a gift; you simply receive it. You don’t make it happen; you wake up to what has already happened.

Hymn 306 O for a thousand tongues to sing

O for a thousand tongues to sing my dear Redeemer’s praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; ’tis music in the sinner’s ears, ’tis life, and health, and peace.

He speaks, and, listening to his voice, new life the dead receive, the mournful broken hearts rejoice, the humble poor believe.

Hear him, ye deaf, ye voiceless ones, your loosened tongues employ; ye blind, behold your Saviour come, and leap, ye lame, for joy!

My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honours of thy name.

The Collect of the Day Presider Merciful Lord, All you know our struggle to serve you: when sin spoils our lives and overshadows

our hearts, come to our aid and turn us back to you again; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Proclamation of the Word

The Readings

Ephesians 5:8-14 read by Susan Colacitti Reader

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. Paul wrote, “8 For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light— 9 for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. 10 Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; 13 but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

Reader This is the Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

please stand Hymn 519 The Lord's my Shepherd

The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want: he makes me down to lie in pastures green; he leadeth me the quiet waters by.

My soul he doth restore again, and me to walk doth make within the paths of righteousness, e’en for his own name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through death's dark vale, yet will I fear no ill; for thou art with me; and thy rod and staff me comfort still.

My table thou hast furnishèd in presence of my foes; my head thou dost with oil anoint, and my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my life shall surely follow me, and in God's house for evermore my dwelling place shall be.

Holy Gospel read by Karen Isaacs, Theological Student Gospeller The Lord be with you. John 9:1-41 People And also with you. Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reader As Jesus walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. 4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the

mud on the man’s eyes, 7 saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see. 8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some were saying, “It is he.” Others were saying, “No, but it is someone like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 But they kept asking him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ Then I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” 13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes. Then I washed, and now I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And they were divided. 17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” He said, “He is a prophet.” 18 The religious authorities did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the religious authorities; for the authorities had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” 24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28 Then they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Here is an astonishing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his will. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you trying to teach us?” And they drove him out. 35 Jesus heard that they had driven him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 He answered, “And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him.” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.” 38 He said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind.” 40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.”

The Celebration of the Eucharist

During the following hymn, we are joined in worship by our youth and children. Our children bring up the bread and wine to set the table for Communion, our family meal. At the Lord’s Table, Christ is the host and we are the guests. We also take up a financial offering to nurture God’s kingdom among our people and beyond our walls. A growing number of us contribute via Pre-Authorized Giving. Giving joyfully and freely to God’s work is one practical way that we are being transformed into a people of hope & confidence, humility & gratitude, wonder & curiosity, generosity & purpose. If you are visiting with us this morning, please feel no compulsion to give.

Spirit of truth and love, life-giving, holy Dove, speed on your flight! Move on the water’s face bearing the lamp of grace, and in earth’s darkest place let there be light! Gracious and holy Three, glorious Trinity, wisdom, love, might, boundless as ocean’s tide rolling in fullest pride: through the world, far and wide let there be light!

Prayer over the Gifts Presider God of light, People your Word brings us to a new vision of your glory. Accept our offering of praise

and thanksgiving, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving please stand or kneel

Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Presider Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth, because you bid your

faithful people to cleanse their hearts and to prepare with joy for the paschal feast; that reborn through the waters of baptism and renewed in the eucharistic mystery, we may be more fervent in prayer and more generous in the works of love. Therefore we raise our voices to you in praise to proclaim the glory of your name.

Sanctus 722, Picardy, arr. Wedd All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your

glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Presider Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in your tender mercy you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there, by his once and for all offering of himself, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. He instituted and in his holy gospel commands us to continue a perpetual memorial of his precious death until he comes again.

Hear us, O merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that we who receive this bread and wine according to your Son Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood.

On the night that Jesus was betrayed he took bread and, when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Accept through Jesus Christ, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit, that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, world without end. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Presider As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will

be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Communion All baptized persons are welcome at Christ’s table.

If you do not wish to receive the wine, you may touch the base of the cup. If you wish to receive a blessing, please come forward and cross your arms.
