Presider: Fr. James Cassidy We welcome Minnesota Orchestra trumpeter, Charles Lazarus to our Gym Masses today. Chuck's diverse and unique musical stylings have made him the Twin Cities most popular trumpet player and we are so pleased that he will also be a part of this years' Cabaret celebration. Thank you as always! SJA hosts the Lake Harriet Summer Sunday worship service at the band- shell today. Join our musicians and Prayer Partners at 10:00 am as we celebrate the beauty of God’s creation. Mobile Loaves & Fishes truck will be on hand for hospitality following the service. Blessed summer to all! The beauty and the curse of any scripture reading is the variety of interpretations each story and text may have to offer. Scholars spend a lifetime trying to understand the context, the language and the original culture of each reading. Of course, then having deciphered all of this, try to understand what it is telling us today. It’s an important function because we put so much weight on scripture as a primary source of revelation. Its like the old joke about the monk copyist who asks his abbot if he might compare some of the modern copies of his work against some of the older copies. After a few weeks he comes back in tears. “Fr. Abbot, I traced one of the great books of our tradition through three hundred years. In the first one hundred years it says ‘every monk should be glad and cele- brate,’ then one copy had a huge ink stain and the next 150 years read ‘every monk should be glad and celibate.’” Careful study and precise copying can be important. Why this introduction? I’m about to make an allegorical leap of faith, and perhaps an anachro- nistic one. Today’s Gospel story is Mark’s attempt to show us who Jesus is-- the fulfillment of the prophets’ “the sick are healed the dead raised”. But it is also the story of faith: the intensity of faith and love together and the importance of patience and persistence as a part of faith. Who hasn’t suffered a sudden trauma and wished there was some magical cure to change everything back to normal. I spent twenty years standing beside bodies and trauma patients hearing the two words “if only”. In today’s story, the only person who can counteract this “if only” arrives on the scene. The combination of the parents’ faith and love combined with the power of Jesus conquers even death. This would have been a good enough story in itself but we also hear the secondary story of the woman with chronic bleeding. Not only was it annoying and dangerous, but according to Jewish law she was forever considered unclean, a social outcast. But in her determination, she is willing to break social convention both by touching someone while being unclean and having this someone be a man who was not her husband. It paid off. Faith is not easy. We would love to understand God’s timing and what we need to learn from it. My favorite hospital story is of a young boy being interviewed about his cancer. He had been close to death many times. He told the interviewer he was not afraid of death. When asked, “What will you ask God when you meet God,” the boy responded with, “Why?” He then continued, “And you know what? If he doesn’t have a good answer I’m going to punch him.” In chaplaincy, we always considered him the most emotionally healthy patient we had.
