Last weekend, we had the honor to celebrate our Declaration of Independence. We are a nation that continues to struggle in our attempt to remain true to these sacred words, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all people are created equal, that they are endowed by their Crea- tor with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happi- ness." In the most recent edition of the Arm In Arm In Africa Newsletter, I shared the wisdom of Carter Woodson, an African American historian, when he reminds us that "if you make a person feel that they are inferior, you do not have to compel them to accept an inferior status, they will on their own." The lofty ideals of our democracy are often eclipsed by the uncanny human need to not live in a way that insures all people equal access to justice. Last weekend, we not only celebrated our democracy, we celebrated being able to come home to SJA and worship together. It was not only an opportunity to actually see one another, it will also be our opportunity to continue the work of justice. Amid the pandemic, we were exposed to the unvarnished truth as to how far away we are from a world of justice for all people. Author Brene Brown reminds us that "We will not go back to normal. Normal never was. Our pre-corona existence was not normal other than we normalized greed, inequity, exhaustion, depletion, extraction, disconnection, confusion, rage, hoarding, hate and lack. We should not long to return, my friends. We are being given the opportunity to stitch a new garment. One that fits all of humanity and nature." As we begin to set aside masks and social distancing in the US, South Africa is under an elevated exposure of the virus, exacerbating food scarcity, education and healthcare inequities. I am inviting you to join me and participate in AIAIA's upcoming virtual fundraiser. Arm In Arm In Action. Our virtual fundraiser will be a 60 minute celebration of our 21st anniversary. Our celebration is next weekend, Saturday, July 17, 12:00 CDT. YouTube and Facebook Live will have links prior to the event. You will be able to hear very compelling stories of lives touched, as well as entertainment from South Africa and the Twin Cities. We are a Mn. based 501(c)(3) supporting food, healthcare and education in a post-apartheid South Africa. Our goal is to raise $200,000 to support our ongoing programs. You can pre-register today by going to aiaia2021.funraise.org. If you are in need of more info, you can call 952.221.5305 or [email protected]. Life is meant to be shared and as we have learned over the years from our South African family, our humanity is intertwined. When one person struggles, we all struggle. We who believe in jus- tice cannot rest. SJA understands the importance of speaking out loud and often when it comes to justice. Consider hosting a Watch Party next Saturday, anything you can do to get the word out would be greatly appreciated. My heartfelt gratitude for your support of AIAIA (aiaia.org). Presider: Fr. SJA Choir: The St. Joan of Arc volunteer adult choir is excited to get back together again after our long separation. We are planning a casual get together, get reacquainted event on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 5:30pm. Sing-a-long with Dan Chouinard! Details to come. Watch your email and this

bulletin. Mark your calendars and plan to COME! We are ready to make a joyful noise. FFI, [email protected]. SJA ISAIAH: At Work in Minneapolis: Join an upcoming forum to learn more about our path to a city where everyone can thrive! Learn more about our work to create a new Department of Public Safety and a path to Rent Stabilization. Join our SJA ISAIAH core team on Zoom July 22 at 6:30pm, or in person at SJA on Wednesday, August 4 at 6:30pm. To RSVP, contact Julie Madden. The St. Joan of Arc Parish Council is seeking SJA parish members interested in serving a 3-year term on the Parish Council. The dis-cernment process will begin tentatively sometime in the summer/fall, once we are able to safely meet in person. Please contact Dennis Heaney with any questions [email protected]. Food Shelf Donations Needed: We continue to accept non-

perishable food items, especially cereal, laundry detergent & body soap for Sabathani Community Center. All items can be dropped off Monday through Friday, 9am - 3pm, in the bins in the Parish Center.

Thank you for your willingness to help those in need. Mobile Loaves Twin Cities needs toiletry size soap, shampoo and lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes and lightweight socks. Please place your donations in the collection hamper in the Parish Center lobby. FFI contact [email protected]. Recycle: Please use the labeled receptacles for compost, paper, glass, plastic, cans, waste and cups. By doing so we will be ecologically responsible and a big help to our maintenance staff as well. Thank you. Parking: Please be considerate of our neighbors and their property. Do not block driveways or park in their “on-street” handicapped areas. Thank You! Wedding Policies: Weddings at St. Joan of Arc are provided as a service to members of the parish community. For a wedding to take place at SJA, it is necessary that one of the engaged couple be a registered member of the parish for at least six months before a wed-ding date can be set. A date can only be scheduled by one of the priests after an initial interview with the engaged couple. A minimum of six months from the time the date is set to the wedding is neces-sary in order to complete requirements. In cases where there has been a previous marriage ending in divorce, it is not possible to set the wedding date until notice of an annulment is in hand. FFI call Sherri Stella at the Parish Center.

St. Albert the Great Summertime Jazz: Join us for Connie Evingson, Sunday, July 18 at 2pm. From Jazz to Broadway Standards this Twin Cities-based singer has an adventurous spirit, that like her music, knows no boundaries. And on Sunday, August 1 at 2pm we welcome Maud Hixon and Rick Carlson. Put aside any definitions of jazz and simply listen to versatile singer Maud and piano virtuoso Rick. They’ll wow you again and again. Tickets $20 at www.stalbertthegreat.org or at the door, Church of St. Albert the Great, 2836 33rd Ave. S. Minneapolis.

The TRUST Chore Program is looking for workers to mow lawns, do small home repairs, organize and clean at the homes of sen-iors and people with disabilities. If you are interested, please call the TRUST Chore Program at 612.827.6150. Join the TRUST Grocery Transportation Program Volunteer Team. We're looking for volunteer drivers to help with this essen-tial program, which empowers seniors to shop independently and mixes in fellowship too. After a pause due to COVID-19, we will resume providing transportation in June. FFI, contact TRUST at 612.827.6159 or email [email protected].

In this time of re-membering and re-centering, and on behalf of our parish and our community, I want to thank all of you who have strengthened and supported and led (God bless all our co-chairs!) our peace and justice ministries in the time we have been distanced.

These ministries, grounded in the teachings of Jesus and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, have been an anchor and a beacon - thanks to all of you.

You have continued to build the Beloved Community. You made sure we stayed connected with one another, and you made sure we countered despair by staying engaged in healing our hurting world. You created sacred space on Zoom. You reflected on and responded to the needs of an unprecedented time. You spoke truth to power - virtually and effectively!

We form the faith of our community through participation in prayer, liturgy, sacraments, education, community and works of justice.

Catholic Social Teaching: The Foundation of Our Faith and Our Shared Future. The principles of CST offer us a powerful lens through which to see and love the world as God does. They are a blueprint for us in overwhelming times: • Human Dignity: Every one of us is created in the image and

likeness of God. • Common Good: We realize our human dignity in relationship

and community. • Option for the Poor: The moral test of our society is how we

treat our most vulnerable. • Rights and Responsibilities: We all have a fundamental right

to what is needed to live in dignity - life, food, shelter, health care, education, employment. We also have a responsibility to participate in our public life together.

• Role of Government: The state has a positive moral function to promote human dignity, protect human rights and build the common good.

• Economic Justice: All workers have the right to decent and fair wages and safe working conditions. No one is allowed to amass excessive wealth while others lack the basic necessi-ties of life.

• Stewardship of God's Creation: We are called to live in right relationship with the earth.

• Promotion of Peace and Disarmament: Peace is not just the absence of war. Peace is the fruit of justice.

• Global Solidarity: We are called to work together globally in an interdependent world.
