TRANSCRIPT
In the summer of 1975, I had a job painting dorm rooms at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont. Along with a brush, roller, and drop cloth, I carried a cheap clock radio as I slogged with my co-worker from room to room. Whenever we hit a new location, my first task was finding a spot for the radio where station KWST could be heard without static interference. It would not have been possible for either of us to cover wall after wall with two coats of white paint weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. without music constantly in the background. That June and July, rock and roll didn’t save my soul, but it did save my job.
One morning, KWST played a song with a snazzy, electric instrumental track, mid-tempo dance groove, and high-pitched vocals, which seemed to my untrained ear to be in close harmony. Most of the lyrics were extremely difficult to decipher, but I did manage to make out something about “Nights on Broadway.” After the track ended, a DJ deploying the standard low-key, mellow hum of a mid-70s FM personality announced that the artist was the Bee Gees.
“That can’t be right,” I exclaimed, attracting the attention of the other painter. “The Bee Gees?” I knew my rock and roll, and that group could not have recorded this song. No way. Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb had released a string of hit singles in the late 1960s and early 1970s that fit comfortably into the pop vocal style of the Everly Brothers and the early Beatles. Songs such as “New York Mining Disaster 1941,” “Massachusetts,” “I Started a Joke,” and “Run to Me” featured melodies that were sweet and soft as taffy. Even parents bought their records.
As one of the millions of serious Beatle fans, I knew that rock artists had the capacity and will to change their styles from album to album. But this was more than just a transition from teen love to adult affairs, or guitars to sitars. Nothing could have prepared careful listeners or critics for “Nights on Broadway” and “Jive Talking,” the two most popular songs from the Bee Gees’ “Main Course” album (June 1975). It was as if an urban American vocal group had stolen the name.
From Soft Rock to Disco PioneersBy Tom Waldman Director of Media + Communications LAUSD
The Bee Gees turning disco – a genre and term not widely known in 1975 – was as significant to pop music in the 1970s as Bob Dylan going from acoustic to electric was to pop music in the 1960s. By 1976, music fans had not only gotten accustomed to the “new” Bee Gees, but were buying their records in huge quantities. “You Should Be Dancing,” which reached #1 on the American pop charts, remains one of the great dance songs of the decade.
A year later, the Bee Gees contributed heavily to what became the biggest-selling soundtrack album of all time, and a cultural milestone. In 2013, the name “Saturday Night Fever” still brings forth images of men in white suits and women in high heels and loose-fitting dresses doing a dance that involves an open-hand being thrust into the air.
Whatever one thinks of the dance style, the music was great. The Bee Gees hits from the “Saturday Night Fever” album, “How Deep is Your Love,” “More than a Woman,” “Night Fever,” and “Stayin’ Alive,” must be included on any serious list of the top songs of the disco era and more.
The song I heard while painting an empty dorm room in 1975 was the harbinger of a trend that transformed pop music. Without the Bee Gees, disco would never have become a phenomenon. Just as Motown required the songwriting skills of Smokey Robinson to thrive, disco required the vocal and compositional talents of the brothers Gibb.
On July 6 at 6:30 p.m. and July 26 at 9 p.m., KLCS is airing “The Bee Gees: One Night Only,” a 1997 concert from Las Vegas that features the group performing many of their greatest hits spanning their pop and disco phases.
Viewers can experience again how this group made the remarkable shift from melodious pop to falsetto-flavored disco.
It’s a 90-minute, mini-history of that glorious period in pop music from 1967 to 1980.

Anthem
Anthem tells the story behind Francis Scott Key’s “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the song famously penned after the relentless bombardment by the British of Fort McHenry during The War of 1812. Historians and music experts discuss the Colonial-era songs and events that influenced Key to write what would become the U.S. national anthem. Anthem also reveals interesting facts about Key’s upbringing and religious leanings while tracing the origins of the song. During the program, the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club and St. John’s College Chorus give voice to this stirring and elegant song, including a performance of its first draft.

Eisenhower’s Secret War
Eisenhower’s Secret War examines Dwight D. Eisenhower’s unwavering commitment — both public and covert — to peaceful co-existence with the USSR in the tumultuous and uneasy Cold War years. Based on recent research by established scholars and writers, the two-part documentary series provides a fresh understanding of how Eisenhower’s national security policies and tactics kept a divided world at peace during the 1950s and in the ensuing decades.
The first part, “The Lure of the Presidency,” chronicles the movement to draft Eisenhower — then NATO commander in Europe — as the Republican candidate for president in 1952. The second hour, “Building Weapons, Talking Peace,” recounts President Eisenhower’s battles against the Soviet Union in the escalating arms race. Hosted by Evan Thomas, journalist and author of the critically acclaimed book Ike’s Bluff: President Eisenhower’s Secret Battle to Save the World, Eisenhower’s Secret War features the accounts of more than 20 witnesses, both American and Soviet, to the major events of the era.
➜ The two-part documentary airs Tuesday, July 23rd at 8PM and 9PM

Nova: Oklahoma’s Deadliest Tornadoes
On May 20, 2013, a ferocious F5 tornado more than a mile wide tore through Moore, Oklahoma, causing 24 deaths and obliterating entire neighborhoods. It was the third time an exceptionally violent tornado had struck the city in 14 years. Yet predicting when and where such killer storms will hit still poses a huge challenge. Why was 2011 — the worst ever recorded tornado season that left 158 dead in Joplin, Missouri —followed by the quietest ever year of activity prior to the Moore disaster?
Can improved radar and warning technology explain why fewer died in Moore than in Joplin? And will tornadoes get worse as Earth’s climate heats up? In this NOVA special, meet scientists in the front ranks of the quest to understand extreme weather events. Also meet storm survivors whose lives have been upended, and learn how we can protect ourselves and our communities for the uncertain future.
