CHILDREN AND AUTISM: TIME IS BRAIN is a sensitive and engaging portrait of two families faced with the daunting challenge of raising an autistic child. Autistic children typically have deficits in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Today, scientists remain mystified about the causes of the complex neurological disorder, while experts claim that early diagnosis and appropriate interven-tion are the keys to helping autistic children reach their potential. During the program, therapists and a board- certified behavior analyst discuss diagnosis, early intervention and the treatment of autism. Airs Monday, April 18 at 8 pm

AUTISTIC-LIKE: GRAHAM’S STORY is an intimate family portrait following one dad’s determined search to find the right treatments, the right doctors, even the right words to describe his “autistic-like” son. This documentary illuminates the medical, social and public health issues faced by families whose “autistic-like” children have no clear diagnosis, and are offered no specific treatment. Airs Monday, April 11 at 8 pm

The public television special DECODING AUTISM looks at the devastating neurodevelopmental disorder that leaves families heartbroken, vulnerable and desperate for answers. The documentary highlights the efforts under-way in New Jersey and New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Louisville and Sacramento, where researchers hope to gain insights that may lead to prevention, new treatments and even a cure. The program includes interviews with a number of families dealing with the challenges of raising children on the autism spectrum and features visits to schools specializing in educating children with autism. Airs Monday, April 4 at 8 pm

Academy Award nominee WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brook-lyn to his home country of Brazil, and to Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest gar-bage dump located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There Muniz photographs an eclectic band of catadores — pickers of re-cyclable materials — and works with them to “paint” their portraits using garbage. The resulting collaboration with these inspiring characters provides profoundly moving evidence of the transformative power of art and its impact on the human spirit. Airs Tuesday, April 19 at 10 pm

MASTERPIECE CLASSIC: UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS is an updated version of one of the most-loved and most-honored series in television history. The cast also includes the original series co-creator Eileen Atkins, Keeley Hawes, Ed Stop-pard, and Art Malik with a script by Emmy-nominee Heidi Thomas. 3-part series begins airing Friday, April 15 at 9 pm

In the season opener, innovative songwriter Elvis Costello performs new tracks and hits that span his three decade career. New season begins airing Sunday, April 3 at 10 pm & Wednesday April, 6 at 8 pm

NATURE/SCIENCE/ADVENTURE

Can emerging technology defeat global warming? The United States has invested tens of billions of dollars in clean energy projects as our leaders try to save our crum-bling economy and our poisoned planet in one bold, green stroke. Are we finally on the brink of a green-energy “power surge,” or is it all a case of too little, too late? From solar panel factories in China to a carbon capture-and-storage facility in the Sahara desert to massive wind and solar installations in the United States, NOVA: POWER SURGE travels the globe to reveal the surprising technologies that just might turn back the clock on climate change. Airs Sunday April 24 at 7 pm and Monday, April 25 at 9 pm

The bushfires that tore through the Australian state of Victoria in February 2009 incinerated over a million acres of land, in-cluding key mountain ash for-est ecosystems. Kangaroos and koalas, wombats and wal-labies, endangered possums and gliders, lizards, echidnas, birds of all kinds, and even fish that lived among these eucalypts were overcome by the flames. Millions died. But burned and traumatized survivors tenderly nursed back to health at wildlife hospitals showed a remarkable ability to bounce back, and the environment an extraordinary ca-pacity for healing. NATURE: SURVIVORS OF THE FIRESTORM airs Thursday, April 21 at 8 pm

GLOBE TREKKER transports viewers to unforgettable destinations through its stunning photography, rhythmic in-digenous music and spirit of adventure. In each episode, one vibrant young traveler ventures off the beaten path to soak up the local culture, sample the cuisine and revel in breathtaking vistas. New season begins airing Thursday, April 7 at 9 pm and Saturday, April 9 at 7 pm

The bushfires that tore through the Aus-tralian state of Victoria in February 2009 incinerated over a million acres of land, including key mountain ash forest ecosys-tems. Kangaroos and koalas, wombats and wallabies, endangered possums and gliders, lizards, echidnas, birds of all kinds, and even fish that lived among these euca-lypts were overcome by the flames. Millions died. But burned and traumatized survivors tenderly nursed back to health at wildlife hospitals showed a remarkable ability to bounce back, and the environment an ex-traordinary capacity for healing.
