Hello fellow Key Clubbers! With July passed us, we are zooming quick through the summer. Just a friendly reminder that both registration and school starts within the month of August. We are quickly approaching the start of another fun year of Key Club and I’m sure all of you are gearing up for all the exciting events we have in store for you on the last meaningful month of summer. So get out there and show us your service pride!

Within July, our club performed our services at local events. Events like Concert on Green & Pancake Breakfast. These are Kiwanis events and they are convenient for members that don’t want to go far and still make a difference in your community. They also are still available in the month August for those interested in volunteering. Concert on Green’s are a series of events in the Cypress Civic Center on every weekends. Volun-teer as you get the opportunity to enjoy some beautiful jazz music and have fun times with your fellow KCers. Furthermore, the officers also got the opportunity to attend Officer Training Conference this month to learn all the neat skills required to serve our club effectively. We got to meet up with all the other corresponding officers from other clubs from all the divisions within our entire Region 3!

On the last day of July, it’ll be Beach Boomba! The amazing beach social for all key clubbers. Show our pride and get to meet other key club-bers there as well! Projecting forward, August is packed with Relay for Life events. On top of that, our officers will be present on registration week to advertise and bring in new members for the new year. If you see us, make sure to drop by and say hi before you leave :)! With that, I hope you all enjoy the final month of summer to the fullest and

Yay, Relay for Life Anaheim, is one of the

few Relay for life our division participates in. This is an event to both raise awareness

of Cancer patients and raise funds for medical research. It's a 24 hour event to

show that the fight against cancer never ends. It will be held at Servite High

School. These events are typically very well-attended and a load of fun. Contact a

fellow officer if you are interested in going.

Regist rat ion Week

Guys, for the registration period, we’ll

be needing lots of help to prepare for the essential elements to advertise to

the best of our abilities. We’ll be need-ing help creating colorful posters and

flyers. Also, we’ll need actual volun-teers at the registration to pass out

flyers and converse with fellow students to get them interested. Contact us if

you would like to help!

Concert on Green

On July 16th, there was an event called Concert on Green. At this

event, volunteers helped the Kiwanis of Cypress sell hamburgers, hot

dogs, and chips to those who came to watch the concert. Since a lot of

volunteers came to help, we had different shifts. Three volunteers

worked in getting the food. Two volunteers managed the money. Three

other volunteers helped with the chips and condiments. After a while,

we would switch with the other group of volunteers. For the volunteers

that waited for the shift change chatted with the club, the Kiwanis, and

the other clubs that were there. Since the volunteers helped the Kiwa-

nis, they let us eat hamburgers and hot dogs. The hamburgers tasted

delicious! In the end, some of us learned how to dance because our

Kiwanis advisor, Lamont Miya, taught us. Through this event, I was

able to meet new people, bond with my club, and talk to the Kiwanis.

Vision Meeting

As an officer within Key Club, I am very privileged to take part in many meetings that comes with my title. Basically, our Key

Club has an assortment of different meetings ranging from different levels of the organization. General meetings are at club-level, Division-

al Council Meetings (DCM) like the name implies is held between various clubs within a division, and Officer Training Conference is at

a regional level. Even those usual types, there lies other types of meet-ing within every respective clubs and divisions. One of my definite

favorite is vision meeting. A vision meeting is held monthly like DCM’s but this is exclusive to officers of a club. The officers like me

gather once a month to talk about the general direction and plans that the club is heading towards. This is where being an officer really

has its perks. When you’re at these visions meetings, you feel like you are in control of the direction of the club. These meetings usually last

up to hours on end.

Planning and outlining prominent events as well as the gen-eral direction of the club is a typical trait of most meetings. The dis-

tinct part that makes vision meetings so enjoyable is the fact that you can be creative at these meetings. You take charge and you propose

ideas. This is when we officers are most creative. We come up with ideas, discuss it, and usually plan out dates to execute it. I don’t like

to do the same thing every time, it becomes repetitive and trite. These meetings bring alive the clubs atmosphere. We do new things, engage

in new activities, and create basically a new Key Club from what our previous year has done. From the ashes of the old, rise the new.

That’s pretty much why I enjoy these meetings so much.

Usual meetings are too mechanic; it’s the usual thing every week. Recite the old and introduce the new. They’re very event-oriented and

don’t include any sort of creative atmosphere for comments and sug-gestions of the sort.

Besides Officer Social that our board sometimes holds, these vision meetings serve as bonding opportunity for us. Most meetings

are time restricted therefore, when we’re done with all the work there’s usually no time left to talk idly and just relax. Take July vision

meeting for example, we went out and got Pho, then walked to a local school for a vision meeting. We met up at 2 P.M. and ended up com-

ing home around 7 or 8 P.M. Even though there’s a meeting agenda, it isn’t so rigid as most. We have more freedom to discuss things that

other meetings don’t allow. All in all, it’s definitely my favorite type of meeting. I look

forward to it every month with great enthusiasm. This is the one

meeting where it never gets boring. It’s not formal or rigid. It’s com-pletely within our control. Hopefully, we’ll have a great August vision

meeting soon.

Chocolate Muzeo

This was my first time going to this event and I wasn’t sure what

we were going to do there, but I sure am glad that I went because

I had a blast there. Finding parking was terrible but the rest of

the time was great. We split up into three pairs to go to different

spots in the event. I went to one of the ticket selling booths and

sold chocotix for those who wanted to sample the yummy choco-

lates available there. After a while of doing that, I got switched to

the hersheys kisses booth, where I collected tickets and helped the

guests grab a big handful of kisses to put in a bag. My shift was

over and luckily, volunteers were allowed to get ten chocotix each

and we went around the various booths and tried the chocolate

samples. They were all so good, I must’ve eaten a gallon of choco-

late that day, but it was sure worth it! There were honey bbq choc-

olate meatballs, which I know sound gross, but they’re the best

meatballs ever! You don’t taste any chocolate, yet there’s this

tangy sweetness in them. I especially enjoyed the caramel apple

popcorn and caramel apple samples; they had so many different

exotic flavors such as pineapple mango. I don’t think I disliked

any of the samples because they were all so fulfilling. There was

many more different kinds of chocolate samples, such as ice

cream, smoothies, brownies, bars, chocolate covered fruits and

even a chocolate shaping contest! I highly encourage members to

attend the next one, it’s a very memorable and delicious event.

OTC

This really enjoyed this event because of the amount of divisions that were

there. It provided an environment that was enjoyable. I was able to be my-

self chanting cheers and willing to show myself. It isn’t like a normal day

that you can scream to the top of your lungs to show your spirit. It was a

great time for everybody there and it was interesting game. Although some

people weren’t into the game and didn’t want to play it was still quite a

sight to see. We were able to show our division; we represent part of our

division along with the other schools in our divisions. I like to ourselves

and represent what our division is to the other schools that don’t know

who we are. The LTGs had workshops to help us bring things back to our

club. These would improve our club and make it even better than before.

They taught us information that not many knew before coming to the of-

ficer training conference. These information they provided helped our

knowledge of being officers in which that we could do our job more effi-

cient. By providing us knowledge of what we didn’t know, it will allow us to

do more of our intended job was to be.

Articles and Submission (cont.) Officer Training Conference On July 16th, I attended my first OTC and it was an absolutely amazing learning experience. When we first ar-rived, I saw many other fellow Key Clubbers huddled around in their own groups so i was reluctant to go greet them. I was warmly welcomed to the event by the cute and kind Kiwanis members. They offered us a complete meal, which i thought was a wonderful way to start a day full of enthusiasm. I over-came my shyness, joined a group, and started conversing to get to know unfamiliar faces. After no time, more and more members arrived and the park immediately began to get bus-tling. Eating time was over and it was time to gather everyone to play icebreakers. We played "ride that pony" and many people did not know what it was at first but gradually every-one was able to participate and have fun. I especially liked this ice breaker because there was a huge amount of energy flowing around due to the running and dancing in front of random people. It was a fun way to create a less awkward at-mosphere before classes started. We went inside the gym for opening session and the LTG's introduced themselves as well as other members on the district board and did a harry potter themed skit to show us what the classes are going to be about. There was a large variety of classes, from president all the way to member retention; they covered all bases of an officer's duties. The classes were very informative and will allow the officers to do their job much more easily. Again we met back inside the gym for closing session and there was a cheer com-petition between the divisions, this made the whole gym echo in loud key club cheers, uniformed yelling and clapping. OTC was over and one of my favorite events came to a smooth end. Divisions stuck around to take pictures and then all headed off in their own direction until next time at Beach Boomba.

Divisional Banquet Driving to the banquet, looking back at old photos and realize how much our division has grown this year! I am so proud that I’m part of the division 30 South family! How-ever, I am so deprived that this year has flown by so drastical-ly! Watching old friends move on and seeing new fresh faces makes me feel great that I’ve joined Key Club this year. At the Clarion Hotel right across from DCON 2011, we all sit in the lobby waiting for our LTG to give us the signal to head on to the dining area. The first moment I walked in, key clubbers from different schools gave me a friendly greeting J. The best part about the divisional banquet was getting down to the food they had. One big slice of chicken, smooth mashed potatoes and broccoli! To top that all off, strawberry cheesecake with whip cream came right afterwards. Thereaf-ter, I could not move because I was so stuffed! During the awards, our club has managed to dominant the number of people who came out to the banquet! GO MAGNOLIA! I also believed that we were the loudest ones there even though we were sitting in the back corner! Key clubbers shouting as they have the attempt to receive their awards! GO Lillian Nguyen, our former secretary for winning and Alan dang for receiving treasurer of the year! I was happy to hear from Alex, also our former LTG , to announce how we managed to have 17 total awards from DCON and now have club of the year award from our division. Overall, my experi-ence as a key clubber have outgrown and has changed the way I viewed key club. Someone from Loara HS made a slide show. In the end, we finally had our divisional picture and it came out pretty nice.

Articles and Submission (cont.) Officer Training Conference On July 16th, 2011, was Officer Training conference, often abbreviated as O.T.C. Officer training conference is an annual event where all club officers from Region 3 come and attend workshops to be taught their duties and responsibilities for their positions given. This event was an amazing chance to meet new people from our region. As a key clubber, you don’t get a lot of chances to attend multi-divisional events so I was incredibly excited. This event was a lot of fun. Everybody at OTC was in-credibly friendly and as I attended workshops I learned much needed information to serve my club and to succeed as a Treas-urer. The day started off with a Barbecue. The Kiwanis club of region 3 was kind enough to serve hot dogs to feed us hungry teenagers. As you may know, we teenagers are ALWAYS hungry, including yours truly, so I couldn’t have been more appreciative. Thanks you guys! :D At the barbecue, we received our official key club officer badges. YAY! I couldn’t have been happier be-cause it was soo shiny and pretty! It was so pretty in fact that I would have never taken it out of its package. Unfortunately, badges are meant to be worn, not looked at. So as I put on my badge and fixed my glasses, I was ready to get my “key clubber self” on! :D First of, we were introduced to the game, “Ride that pony”. The game is incredibly funny and you look ridiculous when doing it, but it was well worth it because it was so much fun. Basically, the point of the game is run around inside of a big circle made by key clubbers and you sing the ride that pony song. As you run inside the circle and when the song stops, you find a person closest to you, and dance with them. When you finish dancing with them, you switch places with them. If you do not understand, please feel free to ask me and I’ll gladly demonstrate. :D One of the fun things about key club is when you have pride for your own Division. First, we started by asking our pres-idents how they feel and then eventually the whole division of 30 south joined in. We then had a spirit battle. MAN! I cannot tell you how intense these spirit battles get, but once you try to outspirit William Hua, you’re in for a big show. It was so fun, but slightly dangerous because if you’re in between a spirit bat-tle, chances are that you are going to get squished so please be very careful.

As the day went on, we went to our Officer Training conference orientation. All the LTG’s of region 3 talked to us about how the day was going to go and how things worked. They even per-formed a little skit for us. The skit was slightly cheesy, but it was cute. The LTG’s portrayed Harry potter characters and gave us a show. :D Now it was time to attend workshops. The first workshop I went to was the Treasurer workshop which was lead by our District Treasurer and former LTG of the Rhinos, CJ Van. He first start-ed off by breaking the ice a bit and told us to state our names, but in a British accent. I was excited because if you know me, I’m always attempting to speak in a British accent. I think my British accent is bloody brilliant, but many would concur and say it’s horrible. CJ Van led the workshop very well and spoke very honestly about how nervous he was, but he was a very good speaker though. No sign of nervousness what so ever. The second workshop was fundraising which was led by CJ Van and our own LTG, Johnny-Cao Nguyen. It was a good workshop because it gave me insight on how to plan a successful fundraiser while giving me ideas on thinking of one. Johnny thought of a idea that I thought was funny, yet creative. He said that you should plan a topless carwash, but the catch is that you don’t wash the top of the car. Funny right? I think so. In the end, I’ve learned so much from Officer Training confer-ence and I hope with all that I learn, I am able to apply to my term as Treasurer of Magnolia Key Club.

Officer Training Conference On July 16th, I, along with the other Magnolia Key Club officers

attend the Officer Training Conference at Bolsa Grande. We were

all very excited to be there since we knew we would learn so much

more about how to become better leaders and officers, and bring all

experiences back to our Magnolia Key Club to better ourselves.

To start off the day, we were given some time to eat lunch

that was being served at the park nearby by the Kiwanis advisors, and

had time to mingle. As we ate hot dogs, drank water, and munched

on chips that the Kiwanis members had graciously provided for us,

Christina Nguyen, our president, gave us our officer badges. It was

like a dream come true. When that badge finally came into the grasp

of my hands, I was completely overjoyed. After everyone had gotten

settled, the LTG’s attempted to start some ice breakers, however, it

did not really go all that well. It was still entertaining though.

After the ice breakers, it was time for the introduction

meeting. We all went in to the gym of Bolsa Grande High School,

and were officially introduced to our Lieutenant Governors. All the

Divisions cheered loudly for their Lieutenant Governors, but we

cheered the loudest for ours, Johnny Ca0-Nguyen! Then, we were

sent to our designated workshops, according to our officer positions.

Unfortunately, there was not a workshop specifically for the histori-

ans, so I just attended a leadership workshop. It was still very in

formative and helpful, however I was a bit upset that they did not

have one for the historians.

During the workshops, we also had some time to get to

know one another. It was really fun meeting all the other officers

from different schools and see what their preferences were as to how

they do their duty for Key Club.

After the workshops, we went back to the gym and stayed

for the concluding session. I actually had to leave a bit early, so I

don’t really know what happened. Overall, I thought the day went

great and I learned that I’m not on my own when it comes to being

an officer. I hope that I could really put to use what I learned and

help our club as much as I can.

Officer’s Blurb Officer’s Blurb is a section where you as the reader get to know a little bit about each of us. The board

officers will take turn each month and reveal things about themselves: their duties, hobbies, interests, and ran-

dom facts. You know us as the people who’s responsible for running Magnolia Key Club, but how much do

you know each and everyone of us? Hopefully, this will be a fun and exciting section for you to learn interest-

ing things about us that you never knew before.

Warning: We all have a bit of a wild child in each of us. So have fun and indulge readers! ;]

Greetings my fellow key clubbers! My name is Jennifer Cam or you can just call me Jen for short. Passion, dedication, spirit, assertive,

motivational, interaction and leadership qualities all describe what I love most about Key Club. Key Club has taught me to achieve high

standards in our community into service and being a leader. Teaching other members the purposes of being out there to lend a hand has

changed the way I thought about Key Club. I may be on the shy side once in a while, however, that didn’t stop me from screaming loud

and proud for my club. Thinking back on how Key Club was to me I thought it would be just a normal club with people who make keys

but I was wrong. I remember my first event which was Light the Night and I recalled how much fun I was having with all of my friends.

Getting a free shirt, food, never-ending soy milk and just being out there to meet amazing people changed my life and sparked my journey

with Key Club. Thereafter, I was so enthusiastic about going to every event they had. I enjoyed most of my few months with being just a

member. Soon, February came and it was time for elections. There were ups and downs for this year’s intense elections but I got the posi-

tion I wanted most. Becoming Vice President, for an organization I truly enjoy, made me excited in serving each and every one of the new

members. A lot of members believe that I am very hyper and socially awkward at times, but you guys just need to get used to these mo-

ments. Overall, I am nervous yet excited for this school year and I am ready to serve as your new Vice president of Key Club.
