The Instrumentation and Control Systems business has provided us all withmany challenges. However possibly one of the biggest challenges we all face fromday to day is processing all the stuff that comes at us via work email, home email, hard mail, managers, coworkers, vendors, clients, family etc.

I recently had the opportunity to see a presentation on the benefits ofapplying the principles laid out by David Allen in his book “Getting ThingsDone”. Quite possibly you have a good system already for managing theoverwhelming amount of stuff that is coming at you on a day to day basis if not I

would like to encourage you to check out David Allen’s groundbreaking work-life management system.

The ISA OC Section Board has been working hard at getting things done and processing all thestuff that is coming at us. We have been meeting at Old World in Huntington Beach to make sure we hadeverything organized for the third annual Automation OC Exhibition, Training & Oktoberfest. This wasour biggest event of the year and with the tremendous support we received from our localInstrumentation and Control Systems Vendors the day was a big success.

The Sept. 28 outing to JPL, located atthe base of the San Gabriel Mountains near

Pasadena, included a stop at “MissionControl,” a National Historic Landmark thatis formally called the Space Flight OperationsFacility. That’s where JPL engineers “talk to”a fleet of spacecraft throughout the solarsystem via NASA’s Deep Space Network of

antennas. They regularly communicatewith such missions as the twin Voyagers, which are approaching the edge of oursolar system, and the Dawn spacecraft, currently orbiting the giant asteroid Vesta.

The ISA members also saw the In-Situ Instrument Lab, a test bed whereengineers try out maneuvers on terra firmathat may be performed by rovers onMars. Another popular stop was at a life-sized model of the Mars Science Labora-tory/Curiosity rover, scheduled for launchto the Red Planet later this year. Addi-tional spacecraft models were on displayat JPL’s von Karman Visitor Center.

The tour guests watched a briefdocumentary narrated by Harrison Ford, called “Journey to the Planets andBeyond,” and later donned 3-D glasses for“Eyes on the Earth,” a short movieexplaining how NASA satellites alsostudy our home planet.

At one tour stop, the group joined ina rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” forChien Jen Lee, a new ISA member whowas celebrating his 100th birthday thatday. The tour was a homecoming, in asense, for Lee, who worked at JPL formany years on the Galileo Jupiter missionand other major projects before retiring in1992. He was accompanied by hisdaughter, Nancy Lee, a dentist who alsorecently joined ISA.

After the tour, the ISA membersgathered at a nearby park for snacks andsodas, and some also ventured on to aPasadena pub and cafe.
