CoNSTRUCTioN TEAm NAiLS iT InNovember,thefirstpostearthquakeconstructionteamof18experiencedmensetfootinHaiti.LedbyMikeMcClanahan,men’spastoratFirstBaptistHendersonvilleinTennessee,theteamundertookdemolition,clean-up,repairandnewconstruction. For15ofthe18men,thiswastheirfirstevertriptoHaiti.ImagineHaiti.ThenimagineHaitiontheheelsofanearthquake,ahurricaneandacholeraoutbreak.Todate,NewMissionshascoordinatedonlylimitedandspecializedteams.However,yearroundconstructionhasbeenunderwaywithHaitianconstructionteams. Theteamsurveyedsitesanddeterminedthehighschoolchurchtobethehighestpriority.Itsroofhadbeencompletelydestroyedinthehurricane.Whatlookedliketwotothreesoliddaysofdemolitionandclean-uptookthreehourswiththehelpofseveralHaitianvillagersworkingalongsidetheAmericans.Thehighschoolstudentswatchedinamazementastheteamhandledsharpclayrooftileandscraplumber.Woodenchurchpewsboltedtothefloorwerealsoremoved.

Everynowandthenasparkoflightcancomeintoyourlife.Allowmetoexplain.ThestorygoesbacksixteenyearsandbeginswhenmyparentswereservingasmissionariesinHaiti.Mymother,Jeanne,wasatthehospitalwhenamotherdiedduringchildbirthandleftthebabygirlanorphan.Thegirl’sfatherthenabandonedthebaby.Mymotherfoundotherextendedfamilytocareforthechild.Theunclewasalreadyworkingforthemissionasayardworker.Thegirl’snameisRoseVardaLouisandhernewmother’snamewasJackie.OvertheyearsIkeptintouchwiththefamily,andwouldhelpthemwithspecialgiftsoffood,clothingandschoolsupplies.JackiewasawomanofgreatloveandlovedRoseasherveryown. Rosedoesnothaveahardheart,inspiteofherpast.Onthecontrary—shehasanabundanceofjoy.OncewhiledoingsomeevangelisminthevillageofConcrab,Iaskedagroupofchildreniftheywantedtoreceiveprayer.Atfirstthechildrendidnotrespond,butthenRose(10yearsoldatthetime)cameforwardbyherself.AfterRosecameforward,otherchildrenfollowed.Roseremainsaleaderinherlocalchurchandsingsoftenduringservices.Sheisnow16yearsoldandisinhighschool. Tragically,JackiediedlastyearleavingRosemotherlessagain.WegaveRoseasummerjobinourkitchen—wherewepreparethemealsforourteams.Shelovedthecompanionshipoftheotherwomen,andIhaveallowedhertocontinueworkingafterschoolhours. ThE pASSioNATE CALLiNg WhenGodwantsmyattentionHetapsintowhatmakesmepassionate.Hecommunicateswithmebytuggingattheissuesclosetomyheart.Proverbs4:23says,“Keepandguardyourheartwithallvigilanceandaboveallthatyouguard,foroutofitflowthespringsoflife.”Frommyheartiswheremyrealcoreproducestheenergytobeeffectiveinmycalling. Godwantsmetobepassionate,notsimplyinterestedinmycalling.Tobepassionaterequiresenergy.As2011kicksoff,manypeoplebegintomakeNewYear’sresolutions.Onthetopofmylistisenergymanagement.ForyearsIhavebeenastudentoftimemanagementandproductivityprinciples.Theconceptofgettingthingsdonethrougheffectivesystemsandproceduresmakes100%sensetome.Ihavemy90-dayprojectoutlooklistandmyannualmasterto-dolist.AskmehowhelpfulthosewerethedayafterthehistoricHaitiearthquake.Notmuchhelp—becausewhatneededmanagementwasnotmytime,butmyenergy. JesusknewhowtomanageHisenergysothatHecouldgive100%toHisministry.FromHistimeinthegardenandmomentsonthehillside,JesusknewthattimeawaymeantenergyrestoredsoHecouldreturnandinvestinothers.Thesedisciplinesarenecessaryforaneffectivelife,otherwiseburnoutisinevitable.“Itisvainforyoutoriseupearly,toretirelate,toeatthebreadofpainfullabors;forHegivestoHisbelovedeveninhissleep.”Psalm127:2 Theareathatisstillastruggleformeismanagingmyenergy,notmytime.I’mspendingall

myenergy,whichisthegreaterproblem.Thisleadstoaliferunningonempty—whichcanbecomethegreaterthreattoburnoutandpoordecisionmaking.Iturnedamajorcornerafewmonthsagoandstoppedworkinglateintothenight. FromScriptureIholdontothestoryofMarthaandMary.TheexacttextinLuke10:40says,“ButMarthawasdistractedbyallthepreparationsthathadtobemade.ShecametoHimandasked,‘Lord,don’tyoucarethatmysisterhasleftmetodotheworkbymyself?Tellhertohelpme!’”Therecomesapointwhenallthebusyactivitiesdon’tequaltheaccomplishmentweneedmost…restandrestorationofourfaith. Personally,I’mpassionateaboutmycallingandnowI’mprotectiveofmyenergy.Thiskeepsme

frombeingoverlyaccessible.I’mveryselectiveonwhereIinvestmyenergy.However,Idomaintainconnectivitythroughsocialnetworking—whichprovidesmetheabilitytostayintouchandcommunicatewithmanypeopleatonceandwhen

possible,tobepersonal,too. IamremindedofPhilippians1:6-7,“Donotbeanxiousaboutanything,butineverysituation,byprayerandpetition,withthanksgiving,presentyourrequeststoGod.AndthepeaceofGod,whichtranscendsallunderstanding,willguardyourheartsandyourmindsinChristJesus.” Myheart’sdesireistobeconsumedbythecallingGodhasuponmylife.It’slikeaflameversusaragingfire.I’maskingGodtomakethistheyearofshining!Let’sshineforJesus.~TimothyDeTellis

Mylifeverseremindsmeofwheremypassionremains.“Whateveryoudo,workatitwithallyourheart,asworkingfortheLord,notforhumanmasters.”Colossians3:23-24.Let’sremembertoprayforeachpastorandteacherservingatNewMissions.TheyarecommittedtotheircallingofservingGodwhilehelpingothers.

MyquestiontoMichelawas,didyoureceiveaChristmasshoeboxatschool?Herresponsewasabigsmileandyes!Whatdidyouenjoythemost?Sherepliedthatitwasprettythingsforherhair.Myeyesbegantotearup.Iknewmylittlegirlathomewasabouttoturn10soonafterMichela,andshelovestohaveherhairdone.Nomatterwhereyouareintheworld,achild’sheartispreciousandtheydeservetobelovedandcherished. Thankfully,Michelahasalovingchildsponsorwhoprovideshertheopportunitytoattendschool,receivefoodandmedicalcare,andmostofall…preciouslettersandaChristmasshoebox!Thisyear,shoeboxeswillreachthehomeofeachNewMissionsstudent—whatatremendousblessingandoutpouringofGod’slove! “Ifyouwanttogetpeople’sattention—healthem,”saidDannydeArmas,administrativepastorforFirstBaptistChurchofOrlando.InNovember,deArmasledateamof48onamedicalmissiontriptotheD.R.Theteamgotagoodtasteofwhatitwaslike2,000yearsagoduringJesus’ministry. UniquetothisteamwasnotonlythesizebutalsothenumberofSpanish-speakingteammembers.FirstBaptist’sSpanishministrypartneredwiththechurch’sAmericanmembership,resultinginnearly20teammemberswhowereabletospeakone-on-onetotheDominicansintheirnativelanguagewithnotranslators. Thehighlightofthetripwasa10-year-oldboywhohadamarble-sizedcystnexttohiseye.Hewasbornthiswayandwasveryself-conscious—unabletoevenlookatpeople.Oneofthephysicianswasabletoremovethecystinjust15minutes,completelychangingtheboy’scountenance.Theboy’sfathermadeaspecialtriptotheclinictosaythatseeinghisnewboywasthebestdayofhislifeandwhatIcouldnotprovide,yougaveme. “Aftertheboy’shealing,Dominicanswhoknewhimcametotheclinicincuriousexcitementaskingaboutthedoctorwhohealedhimandwhereithappened,”saiddeArmas.“ItwaslikewhenJesushealedpeople.Wefeltlikerockstars.” Althoughtheteamwasfirmthattheywouldseeonlystudentsforcrowdcontrolreasons,therewasactuallyno“no”fromthisteam.Oneoftheschool’sheadmastersbeggeddeArmasforafavorexplainingthatoneoftheteachershadasicktwo-year-oldathome.NobeggingwasnecessaryasdeArmasquicklyadjustedplanstoincludeanystaffandanyfamilyofstaff.Thelastpatientofthedaywastheheadmasterhimself. “Ourpeopleengulfedthem,”saiddeArmas.“Whata

TEACHERS HELPING HAITIAre you a schoolteacher? Join the Teacher’s Helping Haiti network and together we can help change the lives of children both in your classroom and overseas.

AUDIO BIBLESPastors at our churches in Haiti received audio Bibles that are solar powered. These will be used as part of adult literacy programs at our churches in Haiti.

TWO CONTAINERS ARRIVETwo 40-ft cargo containers arrived in Haiti just before Christmas. Two more left for Haiti on January 3 with more construction supplies and shoeboxes.

CHOLERA REACHES LEOGANEMarie Chantal, our medical clinic director, met with all our school directors and pastors for a special briefing on treatment procedures.

gOd WAS WiTh ME OnJanuary12,2010,Ihadadream…agooddreamtobuildahighschoolintheDominicanRepublic.Thereare297studentsatColegioNuevaVidainSosua,andweneededmoreclassrooms. Shortlythereafter,Imetwithacontractor,andithappenedtobethesamedaytheearthquakehitHaiti—destroying90percentofourbuildings.Nowmydreamseemedcrazy.WouldIbeabletoevenpersuademyleadership?But,IwasconvincedGodwasabletorebuildHaitiandtoturnmydreamintoareality. IntheOldTestament,JosephhadadreamthatGodwouldusehim.InGenesis39,wereadfivetimesthat“God was with Joseph.”That’sallweneed—Godtobewithus. PastorTonyPoncetiwasintheDominicanRepublicleadingaPastors’Seminar.Sharingmydreamwithhim,hereachedintohispocketandmadethefirstdonationfortheconstruction.Tenmonthslater,PastorTonyreturned,touchedthebuildinganddedicatedittoGod’spurposes.Duringthededication,IchallengedthehighschoolstudentstodreamandbelieveGodforHisfutureconstructionintheirlives. GodiswithusjustasHewaswithJoseph.WecankeepdreamingGod’sdreamsandallowGodtouseustofurtherHisKingdom.~JeanneDeTellisO’Connor

What’syourproblemtosolve?Theworldisfilledwithproblems.Globalwarming,governmentdeficits,unemployment,environmentalpollution…thelistisendless.But,mostoftheseproblemsarenotyourproblemtosolve.Oneday,IwastalkingwithmybrotherTimaboutaproblemthatwasoutsideofmycontrol,andIsaid,“That’snotmyproblemtosolve.”Thatstatementbecameacatchphraseforallthedistractionsofthenewsmedia.Globalwarmingisnotmyproblemtosolve.Idon’thavetheauthorityortheresponsibilitytoevenbegintosolvetheproblemofglobalwarming.Thesameistrueforhundredsofotherproblemsinourworldtoday.Itmaysoundselfishorinsensitive,butmostoftheworld’sproblemsarenotmyproblemtosolve. Recently,Ihadadreamthatleftmewithavividmessage.Inmydream,IwasatalargegatheringofChristians,andweweresinginganddancinginaworshipservicewiththousandsofpeople.Intheworshipservice,Iwasshoutingoverandover,“Thisismyproblemtosolve!Thisismyproblemtosolve!”Inmydream,IwassohappythatIhadaproblemtosolvebecauseIknewthatGodhadgivenmethisproblemtosolve.IknewGodwouldgivemethevictoryregardlessofthecircumstances,events,ortheoutwardappearanceoftheproblem.Itwaspersonal—thiswasmyassignmentfromGodtosolvethisproblem.HasGodgivenyouaproblemtosolve?Eachofushasanassignment.Weallhaveajobtodo...amissiontocomplete. Often,myfatherwouldgivemeaproblemtosolvewithoutmuchdetailedexplanation.TherewasatimewhensomeonehaddonatedpropertytousinJamaica.Therewerenumerousissueswiththedeed,

andaftermanyyearsthelawyerinJamaicacouldnotgetthingsstraightenedout.Intheend,webegantosuspectthelawyeroftryingtotakeadvantageofus.In1984,whenIwas23yearsold,myDadsentmetoJamaicatogogetthedeed.Ishowedupatthelawyer’sofficeunannouncedonaMondaymorning.ShetoldmethatIwouldneedtogotoKingston.ThenextdayIwasonasmallplanetoKingston,Jamaica.Icamehomewiththedeed,andwesoldthelandtoafamilyinNewJerseythenextmonthforcashtopayforourfirstbuildingsinHaiti.IdidnotknowanythingaboutthelawsofJamaica,whomtospeakwith,orwheretogo.Iwasonlyfocusedononething.Dadtoldmetocomehomewiththedeed.Irememberprayingallthewaythroughthattrip,andGodprovidedthevictory! Ifyouhaveaproblemtosolve,donotfocuson

yourenemiesorthecircumstances—focusonyourGod-givenassignment.IntheBible,therearemanystoriesofmenandwomenwhoweregivenanassignmentfromGodtosolveaproblem,fightabattle,orliberateapeoplefromawickedruler.One

ofmyfavoritestoriesisthatofNehemiahwhowasgiventheassignmenttorebuildthewallsofJerusalem.Nehemiah,whowasfocusedexclusivelyonhismission,refusedtodiscusstheissueswithhisenemies.Ifyouwillhavethatsamefocuseddetermination,Godwillprovidethevictory.Intheheatofthebattle,rememberthewordsofNehemiah4:20,“Our God shall fight for us.” ~GeorgeDeTellis,Jr.

HasGodgivenyouaproblemtosolve?WeareallonamissionfortheMaster.Sometimesthetaskthatisgiventousappearssmallandinsignificant,butothertimestheassignmentappearsinsurmountable!Whetherthetaskislargeorsmallthereisnogreatercalling,nogreaterservicethantobeusedofGod.

AtSaddlebackChurchinCalifornia,achurchmemberwantedtoleavealegacyandhadtheideatolaunchacampaigntorecycleplastictoraisemoneyforBibles.Throughcollectingbottlesatbinsacrosstheirchurchcampus,monieshavehelpedfundthepurchaseanddistributionofBiblesaroundtheworld. ThedistributionofBiblesinHaititookplaceonaFridaymorningwhilePastorSteveRutenbarfromSaddlebackChurchwaswithmeinHaiti.OnlytwodayslaterwefoundourselvesvisitingafewNewMissionschurchesacrosstheLeoganePlain,anditwasajoytoseecasesofBiblesactuallyinthechurches.HaveyoueverbeentochurchandforgotyourBible?Wasitgreattohaveoneinthepewinfrontofyou?Thankfully,ourchurcheshaveBiblesonhand.PreachingthegoodnewsofGod’sWordisourpriority.~TimothyDeTellis

Thebiggestconcernforanyboateristoavoidlossoflivesandproperty.Thiscanoccurbycapsizing,sinking,orrunninguponrocksorcoral…justtonameafew.Ourfaithisafightoffaith,andwearenottoshipwreckourfaith.Somepeoplemaythinkthattheirfaithcannotbeshipwrecked.IdoverymuchbelieveintheprovidentialpowerofGodtoholdontous.IalsobelieveHegivesusthelibertytomakeourowndecisions. Weneedtoavoidthestormorthegrounding.Idon’tthinkweintentionallyaimourboatfortherocks,butIdobelievewecanbecomereckless—asleepandnotalertofoursurroundings.ANorwegianfriendofminerecentlysaid,“Whenaboatsinks,manytimesthemenhavebeentravellingthosesamewatersalltheirlives.But,theybecomerelaxedandfallasleep.”Theoceancanbeoverpowering.Wemustnotbecomecarelessregardingourfaith.Wemuststayfocused—oncourse. OneofmyfavoritequotesfromPilgrim’sProgressis,“Oneleakwillsinkaship,andonesinwilldestroyasinner.” Wecanfindourselvescaughtinthemidstofastorm.InHaiti,mywifeandI,alongwithsixothers,wenttothelittleislandofLaGonave—whichislocated15milesoffourbeach.Webroughtsome

foodtogivetothepeopleweweregoingtoministerto.Uponourtimetoleavetheisland,thewindhadreallypickedup.Itriedtwicetoleavetheisland,butIhadnevernavigatedinsuchhugewaveseverbefore.Thewavesweretallerthantheheightofour24-footboat.Ireturnedtotheislandandannouncedthatweweregoingtohavetospendthenight.Thankfully,wehadradiocontactwithmyfatherbackatthemission. Ontheislandweheldachurchserviceinalittlebuildingmadeofsticks.Thechurchwasfullofpeople,andtheywereamazedtoseethewindshadstoppedafterwehadchurch.Thenextmorningwereturnedsafelyattheshoresofourmission. Windandwavescanrepresentobstacles.Will

youonlyserveGodwhenyouhaveclearskiesandsmoothsailing?WillyoucontinuetoserveGodinthestorm?Surely,yourfaithwillbetested.Everyday,IamverymuchawareofthedecisionsImake.“Therefore let us not sleep as

Fromtheearlyyearsofpreschool,childrenatNewMissionslearntheyaresomeonespecial.Wenowhave25churchesandschoolsinHaiti.OurnewestlocationisinthevillageofCalitorontheLeoganePlain.ThepastorandschooldirectorisFanfanMichelandwhenhewasayoungstudentatNewMissions,Igavehimkeyboardlessonsatourfirstchurch.Itisagreatjoytoseeourgraduatesnowleadingtheircommunitiesandhelpingtochangethelivesofchildren. REFLECTING THE HEART OF GOD

NewMissionssponsorTammyRahnnoticedarecurringthemewhilereadingthroughScripture.VerseafterversedescribedGod’sheartfor“theleastofthese,”andJesus’ministryshowedHisloveandprovisionforthepoorandhungry.Afterdiscoveringthesetruths,herownheartreflectedherFather’spriorities.“TohavetheheartofGod,youcan’thelpbutwanttofeedthehungry,”saysTammy. ThisrealizationspurredTammyintoaction.AftermanytripstoHaiti,shewasfamiliarwiththeneedsofthepoorestcountryintheWesternHemisphere.Tammyhadinteractedwiththepoorandhungryandknewtherewasmoretobedone.Evenbeforelastyear’scatastrophicearthquake,manyHaitiansstruggledtoeatenoughtosurvive.Thedisasteronlyintensifiedtheproblem.“Scripturecommandsustoalwayshaveaheartattentivetothepoor,”saysTammy.“Tome,thatisHaiti.IbelievethatiswhereGod’sheartis.”ShebegantoraisemoneywithherchurchtoprovidericeforfamiliesinHaiti.Throughfundraisers,NewportAssemblyofGodinPennsylvaniaraisedover$5,000tofeedthehungry. InFebruary2011,TammyandherfamilytraveledtoHaitiwithothermembersoftheirchurchtodistributethericetheyraisedfundstopurchase.TheteamhelddryfeedingsatthreeNewMissionsschools.Duringthedistributions,theteamgavericeandoiltoeachstudentandprayedovereachofthem.Thefoodandcookingitemswerethentakenhometoprovidemealsforentirefamilies.

“Ialwaysgetteary-eyedwhenachildgetsabagofrice,”saidTammy.“Itmakesmydayjusttoknowsomethingassimpleasthatmakessuchanimpactinalife.IcountitaprivilegetobethehandsandfeetofGodinHaiti.TheBiblesayswewillalwayshavethepooramongus,butwealwaysneedtobeamongthepoor—helping,encouraging,andlendingahandwheneverwecan.” TammyandtheteamfromNewportAssemblyofGoddistributedfoodtoabout850studentsduringtheirweekinHaiti.Hundredsoffamilieswereblessedbytheobedienceandcommitmentofthischurch.TheteamwasalsoblessedastheysawthepromiseofProverbs22:9fulfilled– “A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.” ~JaimeeMarks,ContributingWriter

WepurchaseasmanymaterialsinHaitiaspossible—tosupportthelocaleconomy.However,someitemsaresimplynotavailable.Wedohaveasourcefortinroofing,concreteandblocksinHaiti;andsincetheearly80swehaveusedthesametruckingcompanyforallofourgravelandsand. BehindthescenesisamanfromSouthCarolinawhoprovidesthehiddeningredientstologisticalplanning:thepriceandsourceofmaterials.DaleCollins,fromSeacoastChurchinSummerville,isavolunteerforNewMissionswhocontributeshisexpertiseinconstructionmaterialandsuppliers. Whenitcomestoplanning,I’mallin.It’simportanttoplanandappropriatelyassigntherequiredresources(time,people,andtools)toachievethedesiredoutcome.Ienjoythedreaminganddesigningsidesoflife.Fromideastoimplementation,Ifindagreatsenseofreward.However,IwelcomemyplanningtobetrumpedbyGod’sdivineorchestration.Yes,Godisinourplanningprocess—butHeisalsoLordovertheoutcome. God’swill(sovereignty)istheultimatepower.WhileIbelieveinthefreewillofmanIalsobelievethatGodcantrumpuswheneverHewants.He’sGod!Proverbs16:3says,“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”Whenitcomestoplanning,myprayeris:“Godgivemethewisdomanddiscernmenttomakethebestdecision,andmayYourwillbedone!” DuringtheplanningphaseforrebuildinginHaiti,wedeterminedwhichbuildingwouldbeplacedonthetopprioritylistbyfocusingonthemosturgentneeds.Ononeofmytripsaftertheearthquake,oneofmysponsoredchildren,Catiana,andIsharedlunchtogether.Iaskedherifshewasdiscouragedbecauseherschoolbuildingwasgone.Sheandherclassmatesweretemporarilymeetinginsidethedininghall.Tomysurpriseshejustsmiledandsaid,“I’mhappytogotoschool.”Onapersonalnote,monthslater,myheartjumpedforjoythedayIsawthephotoofCatianaproudlystandinginfrontofthenewelementaryschoolatBord-Mer.Twonewbuildingswereconstructedonthatcampusduetoearthquakedamage. Myweaknessispatience—asit’shardtosimplywatchandwait.God’stimingisperfect.I’mgoing

todoallIcanonmypartandthengiveGodtheauthoritytobeGodinmylife.Allthroughouttheplanningprocess,I’veinvitedGodtopourin.IactuallybelievethatHeisthesourceofideasandcreativity,soweare“best-partners”inanythingIdo.God’splansarebest.“But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.” Psalm 33:11 Recently,IhadameetingwithachurchregardingpartneringwithNewMissionsforbuildinganewHaiti.Thepastoraskedmeaquestionfewhaveeveraskedme.“Ifyoucoulddoanything,whatwouldyoudo?”Myresponse,“Buildatradeschool.”Hereplied,“BuilditandI’llhelppayfortheconstruction.”ThisJune,wewillbreakgroundonatradeschoolatNewMissionsinHaiti.Theschoolwilltrain

Haitiansinconstructiontradesandmanagement.God’stimingsurprisedme.WithalloftheconstructionthatcontinuesinHaiti,thistradeschoolwillprovidemanyopportunitiesforgraduatesofNewMissions.

Thetradeschoolhasbeenadreamofoursformanyyears.Now,God’stimingmakesitperfect.God’sorchestrationhappenswhenwewelcomeit,inviteit,andevenexpectorprayforit.That’sthebalancebetweenthefreewillofmanandthesovereigntyofGod.Wemustlivewithanopen-handpolicy.I’minaweofGod’sorchestrations…notmystrategies. IpraytoseeGodmaketheplansthatchangelives.IbelievethatJesusisstilltheanswerfortheworldtoday.Hebringsrealhope.Inwhateverwedo,let’saskGodforwisdomandthenserveothers. “If you do not have wisdom, ask God for it. BUiLdiNg HiS KiNgdom AtNewMissions,everythingwedohasonepurpose—sharingtheGospel.ThistruthwascleartoJackGritterandateamfromNorthlandChurchinLongwood,FL,ontheirrecentconstructiontriptoHaiti.Whiletheirtasksincludeddemolition,rebuilding,anddistribution,Jacknotedthatthemostimpactfulmomentsfortheteamweretheirordainedencounters. TheyfirstmetayoungmothernamedMichelinandhertwo-year-olddaughter.WhileMichelinwascrackingrockswithahammer,theteamofferedbottlesofwaterandbeganaconversation.Thenextday,Martha,whoworksinourHaitioffice,foundMichelinandsharedtheGoodNewswithher.TheteamrejoicedwhenMarthareturnedandreportedthatMichelinacceptedChristasherLordandSavior!Jackdescribedthismomentas“awesome,becauseMichelinhadcapturedourcollectivehearts.” Anotherday,JackwasabletovisitwithLovelyLuc,thesponsoredchildofhisbusinesspartner.LovelyandherfriendcametotheNewMissionscompoundonaborrowedbicycle.Asthegroupsharedlunch,bothyoungladiesprayedtoacceptChristwhiletalkingwithCharlieDeTellis.JackwasthrilledtoreturnhomeandsharethisnewswithLovely’ssponsorfamily. SQUEEZE mY HEART Haveyoueverfeltyourheartsqueezed?SincetheearthquakeinHaitiinearly2010,theheartsofpeoplehavebeensqueezedtodoeverythingtheycantohelpHaitirecover.ThankGodHaitiisrecovering.MythreesonsencouragedmetostayfocusedtohelptheminHaiti’srecovery. Meanwhile,hundredsofchildrenintheDominicanRepublichavebeenwaitingforsponsorship,whilemorearewaitingtoberegistered.OurnewhighschoolthatopenedlastyearwillopenasecondhighschoolsessionthisAugust—adding150additionalstudents.IbelieveGodsqueezedtheheartofmyson,Tim,whenhesaidtome,“Mother,I’mgoingtohelpyoufindsponsors.” OnApril10,Tim’ssonLucturned13yearsold.Nonna,asmygrandchildrencallme,hasnotbeenabletoattendmanybirthdaypartiesofmy10grandchildren.IcanonlyrememberonebirthdaypartywithLucwhenwehappenedtobepassingthroughOrlandoforaspeakingengagement.Timemailedtotellmehewassponsoringa13-year-oldboyfromtheDominicanRepublicasabirthdaygiftforhisson. MondaymorningcouldnotcomequicklyenoughformetofindLuc’ssponsoredboy.IhadanewcalculatorandsomefinepenstogivetoLuc’sboy.IfoundLuis—andhehadthesamegentle,tender,lovingspiritasLuc.IcouldfeelhisleanframeasIhuggedhim,andIfeltlikeIfoundanewgrandson. IapologizedtoLuisforthelittlegift,andhemeltedmewithwhathesaid:“Notimportantatall;itisyourloveformethatisimportanttome.”IneverwantedtostopembracingLuis,asIlovedhimwithwordsandaprayer.Luisisthesonofasinglemotherfromthemountains,andhismotherhasbeenworkingfortheownersofthecondo

WoRSHip SpREAdS THE goSpEL AcrosstheLeoganePlain,peoplegatheratchurchestoworship,inanareathatwasknownastheVoodoocapitalofHaiti.WhenNewMissionsbeganin1983,Iremembertravelingvillagebyvillagehostingoutdoorevangelismmeetings,astherewerefewChristianstobefound.Alongdirtroads,wewouldturnthebackofapick-uptruckintoastage,andplayworshipsongsandpreachtheGospel.Onebyone,peopleofthevillagewouldrespondaswereturnedeachweek.Finally,withahandfulofChristians,wewouldstartachurch. IhavetwomemorieswhenworshipinHaitishapedmyperspectiveofwhatitmeanstosurrender.ThefirstwasatourchurchinBord-Mer.SinceIplayedthekeyboard,Ifoundmyselfarrivingearlytochurch—turningonthesoundsystemandsettingup.Therewasnopredeterminedschedule.ThemusicwasselectedatrandomaccordingtoGod’sleading.ItwasledbytheSpirit,andthecongregationwaswillingtowaitupontheLord. Mysecondmemorywasrightaftertheearthquake.Whiledrivingdowntheroadandthroughoutthenight,wecouldheartheHaitianssingingsongsofpraisetoGod—afterthemosthorrificdisastertohitHaitiin200years. WorshipspreadstheGospel,andtheHaitians’singingisthetestimonyofliveschanged.TheirpassionforGodisloud,andtheirworshipisspreadingtheGospelacrossHaiti.~TimDeTellis

You’veheardtheoldsaying,it’s not what you know that matters…it’s who you know.Truetolife,beingabletocallsomeonewhocanhelpyouismorepowerfulthanaheadfullofknowledge.Ineverysectorofsocietythereisawebofrelationshipsof“peoplewhoknowpeople.”Youmayhaveagreatideaforamovie,orcouldhavewrittenanamazingsong.But,unlessyouhaverelationshipsinthoseindustries,itisveryunlikelythatyourworkwillbecomemorethanwordsonapage. WheneverIhavewrittentoacorporationorfoundationseekingsupportforourministry,Ihavealwaysfailed—unlessIfirsthadacontactwhowasabletonavigatemethroughthewebofrelationshipstoreachtherightperson.Thisisespeciallytrueinfindingagreatjob.Fortherightperson,acompanyisalwayshiring!It’sallabouttherightrelationships. Ifweextendtheoldmaxim,wecanaddthatoftenwho you don’t know is who you need to know.Socialscientistshaveobservedweareamaximumofsixrelationshipsawayfromanybodyintheworld!So,apersonyouknowhasarelationshipwithsomeonewhoknowssomeone…whoknowsthepersonyouneedtoknow. Nomatterhowmanybooksyouread,orhowmucheducationyoureceive,whatyoudon’tknowwillalwaysexceedwhatyoudoknow.Deuteronomy29:29tellsus,“The secret things belong to God, but that which has been revealed belongs to us.”OurGodisomniscient;Heknowseverything.Godknowsyourmindandbodybetterthananydoctorintheworld. Inmyworkinministry,Iamalwaystryingtolearnsomethingnew,ormakecontactwithpeople

Idon’tknow.Iamfondofsaying,“IfyouknowJesus,youknoweverybody,”becauseJesusknowseverybodyandeverything.WehavethepowerfulsourceofknowledgeinourrelationshipwithGod.Heisabletoopendoorsandrevealknowledgetousbeyondourownabilities.Asabeliever,youareonlyonerelationshipawayfromthepersonyouneedtoknow. Ioftenmeetpastorswhospendthemajorityoftheirtimecaringforasmallcongregationofpeoplewhenthereareamillionpeopleinthecity—mostofwhomhaveneverbeeninvitedtochurch!Thepastordesperatelywantstoseehischurchgrow,butspendsmuchofhistimemeetingwiththesamepeople.

Inthecourseofanygivenweek,herarelymeetsnewpeopleinthecommunity.Pastor,it’snotwhoyouknow…it’swhoyoudon’tknowthatisgoingtogrowyourchurch!
