Landmarks It was a sad moment when I learned the Tastee Freeze Drive-Thru Clown was gone! The clown on the Bowling Green, KY by-pass was a victim of the velvet hammer of progress. The nearby medical center may have needed the area, for additional parking. This was one of the last places that was really fast food. You drove up to the window, placed your order & within a few minutes your burger, fries & milkshake was handed to you. You drove a few feet into the parking lot & enjoyed your meal. It served me well during my college days. My family was treated there on several trips to visit my par-ents. I can imagine the local people used this as a land-mark- We live near the Tastee Clown-you can't miss it!

The District of Columbia almost lost THE BIG CHAIR trademark of the Curtis Brothers furniture warehouse. It stands almost 20 feet high & again was the reference point for directions for over 40 years. Small mom & pop restaurants operations are about gone. Most have giv-en away to high rises & office buildings. Mom is not around any more to start the day's turkey or chicken cooking. Forget about a slice of homemade pie you liked for lunch with the blue plate special. The pie is now baked in an adjoining state & trucked into the ar-ea during the wee hours of the morning.

Those of us who were born about the end of World War II know times were different. My father was off to farm & mother made sure I was ready to walk to catch the school bus. At one time I had to walk a half mile across three fields & back again in the afternoon. I looked for-ward to enjoying my walk home in the woods of tall walnut & hickory trees. The gravel road to the farm house wandered aimlessly with several twists crossing

two crude cattle bridges. It was not in a hurry to get you anywhere. I always thought I would have a house built someday in one of its curves.

This never happened. When I graduated from college I went east to work in Virginia. At vacation times I re-turned to visit the homestead. It was while I was away, a property dispute arose & it was settled by bulldozing much of the woods. The old road was gone. A straight new road running alongside a new fence greeted my return, the old road would never be there again for me in this life.

Two roads diverged in a woods, & sorry I could not travel both & be one traveler, long I stood & looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by.

(Robert Frost)

As I travel on life's pathway, Knowing not what the years may hold; As I ponder, hope grows fonder, Pre-cious mem'ries flood my soul; PRESIOUS MEM'RIES, HOW THEY LINGER,HOW THEY EVER FLOOD MY SOUL,IN THE STILLNESS OF THE MIDNIGHT, PRE-SIOUS,SACRED SCENCES UNFOLD.

(lyrics-Sacred Selections for the Church) - Psalm 145:7

(Jacob said) & this stone, which I have set for a pil-lar, shall be God's house: and all that thou shalt give me I will surely give a tenth unto thee. (Genesis 28:22)

#3 of 4 Bear Much Fruit

This is found in John 15:1-17, particularly verse 8: “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my

disciples.”

A DISCIPLE UNDERSTANDS FRUITFULNESS

Even from the first page or two in your Bible, God sets forth the principle of ____________________________. Fish reproduced fish.

Birds reproduced birds. Cattle reproduced cattle. Apple trees produce seeds that will create more apple trees. And even humans, as

God created us, were to reproduce other humans as well. In other words, everything reproduced as the Bible says, “after their kind.”

This is the law of nature.

As you understand fruitfulness, it’s important to note that the “bearing of much fruit” is three-fold. In the Bible, there are three mani-

festations of the fruit we are to bear, as branches on the vine of Jesus. Here they are:

• First, it begins with ___________________________________________. Galatians 5:22-23, Philippians 2:15, 1 Thessa-

lonians 4:12. A fruitful life bears the mark of the Godhead, the Father, Son, and Spirit!

• • Second, it progresses to _____________________________________. 1 Peter 2:12, Colossians 1:10, Matthew 5:16.

To a lost world or skeptical culture, there is a need to “see,” to observe some tangible proof that Christians are a differ-

ent breed, are of another world! This, too, is spiritual fruit.

• • Third, the first two results in souls becoming ____________________________________. Colossians 1:6 speaks of

the “gospel bearing fruit all over the world.” As Romans 7:4 says, when we are raised with Christ to a new life, we are

“raised to bear fruit.” The fruit of a Christian is another Christian.

A DISCIPLE ALSO UNDERSTANDS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THESE 3 TYPES OF FRUIT

This is the main point of today’s message. There is a distinct connection between these three types of fruit, plus they are progressive

in nature. The fruit of spiritual character leads to the fruit of good deeds, which in turn opens the doors of hearts to receive the sav-

ing message of the gospel. To understand fruitfulness, one must see all three of these in a cohesive balance in a person’s life. A

DISCIPLE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT THE MISSION OF CHRIST

1. A true disciple understands the _______________________ of the One they are following. Matthew 1:21, Luke 19:10.

2. 2. A true disciple understands that a disciple is one who is _______________________! Jesus said as he neared the end of his

time on earth, “As the Father sent me, I am sending you” John 20:21.

3. 3. A true disciple models the life of Jesus Christ as we:

• __________________ with the eyes of Jesus. Matthew 9:36-38

• __________________ with the heart of Jesus. John 8:1-11

• ________________ with the hands of Jesus. Mark 8:1-10

• __________________ with the mouth of Jesus. Matthew chapters 5,6,7

So today, stay close to Christ, connected to the vine. Let your branch of his kingdom become fruitful. As you implement the teachings

of this message, you will develop the necessary balance, finding strength in all three aspects of fruitfulness: the fruit of the Spirit

(spiritual character), the fruit of good deeds, and seeing the fruit of souls coming to Christ. Then you will “bear much fruit” and know

the fullness of living in Christ.

Jesus Discipleship Requirements

#3 of 4 Bear Much Fruit

Wayne Monore

1. Read the complete story of the vine and the branches in John 15:1-17. Envision yourself

there that day when he stopped by a vineyard to give a spiritual lesson. How does the im-

agery of a vineyard help you to understand God as the caretakes? Jesus as the vine? Disci-

ples as the branches? Fruitfulness?

2. Give thought to (or discuss in your group) the correlation of fruit being found in three differ-

ent ways. Is there one or two of these that you are stronger in while maybe giving less em-

phasis to the third?

• How are you doing in the development of spiritual character and values?

• How are you showing yourself to be a disciple by doing good deeds, serving others?

• How are you sharing your faith and looking for opportunities to lead people to Christ?

3. Is the statement, “The fruit of a Christian is another Christian”, logical to you? Is it a matter

of only evangelism being the fruit of a disciple? How do the first two manifestations of fruit

lead to the last one – people being saved and following Jesus as a disciple also?

4. In what ways are today’s Christ-followers falling short in fulfilling the purposes of Jesus to

“seek and save the lost?” Is there a fear factor involved here? Is there a lack of knowledge

limiting us? Could it be our busy lifestyles that hinder us? Have we not been taught proper-

ly? Do we fall short in the compassion Jesus had for people?

5. Give thought to your life in the following ways we can model the life of Jesus: • See with the

eyes of Jesus. Matthew 9:36-38

• Feel with the heart of Jesus. John 8:1-11

• Care with the hands of Jesus. Mark 8:1-10

• Speak with the mouth of Jesus. Matthew 5,6,7

___________________________________

Questions on Evangelistic Approach - Some questions dealt with how to approach people of different religions

____________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________

- The Bible provides basic principles for evangelizing everyone, especially the book of Acts

____________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________

Principle #1 Luke 6:1-2 – Jesus prayed __________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Acts 13:1 – Apostles prayed ________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Through prayer we put all things into their proper context.

Romans 1:16 _______________________________________________________________________

Romans 8:28 _______________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________

Principle #2 Faced with an array of opposing belief systems, the Apostles simply preached the gospel – Acts 2:1-38

The Gospel in its Simplest Terms - I believe that the Bible teachers:

A. Jesus the divine Son of God, proven so by fulfilled prophecy, miracles and His resurrection, died on the cross to atone for all of my sins and yours as well (Romans 1:14;3:21-23).

____________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________

B. My own resurrection and eternal life is made possible not by perfect obedience but rather by faith in Him which is expressed in repentance, baptism and faithful discipleship. (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; Matthew 10:22)

4 Principles of Personal Evangelism

4. What rule was added in Lesson #2? ________________________________________

C. And Jesus is the only person through whom a person can be saved and thus have a relationship with the true God of heaven. (Acts 4:12; John 14:6).

____________________________________________________________________________________

- You are responsible for proclaiming the gospel, not their decision or response. ______________

____________________________________________________________________________________

Principle #3 - There is no “silver bullet” scripture ____________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________

- If you proclaim the gospel it will force each person to react somehow: _____________________

____________________________________________________________________________________

- Romans 1:18-20 ___________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________

Principle #4 Conversion is sometimes a long process. ______________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Sometimes God needs to get their attention first.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Sometimes the only thing we can do is let God do His work.

- I Timothy 2:4 ______________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________

Remember the pattern for evangelism:

- Pray ______________________________________________________________________________

- Proclaim __________________________________________________________________________

- Persevere _________________________________________________________________________

- Patience __________________________________________________________________________
