    GODHEAD - WHO GOD IS

    . Part 3 - The Value of a Name

To this point, God has been identified by his singularity or individuality and image. Our

third identifier will be by title and the fourth will be by name. The very last identifiersinvolve an examination of his works.

A title is defined as a word or phrase attached, usually as a prefix , to the name of aperson in order to denote his:

    office

    social dignity

    or status

A name is defined as being a word or words by which a person, place or thing is known.

In summation, a title denotes one's role, what one does and/or their position in society, whereas a name declares who that person is regardless of the role he plays, what hedoes or the position in society he holds.

    Further information: Names of God

In the ancient world, particularly in the ancient near-east (Israel, Mesopotamia, Egypt,Persia) names were thought to be extremely powerful and to act, in some ways, as aseparate manifestation of a person or deity.[3] This viewpoint is responsible both for thereluctance to use the proper name ofGod in Hebrew writing or speech, as well as thecommon understanding in ancient magic that magical rituals had to be carried out "in

[someone's] name". By invoking a god orspirit by name, one was thought to be able tosummon that spirit's power for some kind of miracle or magic (see Luke 9:49, in whichthe disciples claim to have seen a man driving out demons using the name ofJesus.)This understanding passed into later religious tradition, for example the stipulation inCatholicexorcism that the demon cannot be expelled until the exorcist has forced it togive up its name, at which point the name may be used in a stern command which willdrive the demon away.

    Biblical Names:

In the Old Testament, the names of individuals are meaningful; for example,Adam isnamed after the "earth" (Adam) from which he was created. (Genesis 2)

A change of name indicates a change of status. For example, the patriarchAbram andhis wife Sarai are renamed "Abraham" and "Sarah" when they are told they will be thefather and mother of many nations (Genesis 17:4, 17:15). Simon was renamed Peterwhen he was given the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 16).

Throughout the Bible, characters are given names at birth that reflect something ofsignificance or describe the course of their lives. For example: Solomon meant peace, and the king with that name was the first whose reign was without warfare. Likewise,

Joseph named his firstborn son Manasseh (Hebrew: "causing to forget") as a gesture offorgiveness to his brothers for selling him into slavery.

Biblical Jewish people did not have surnames which were passed from generation togeneration. However, they were typically known as the child of their father. Forexample: $?&?$? "?0? *?:?*? (David ben Yishay) meaning, David, son ofJesse. In asense, they used their fathers' first names as their own last names, a practice done bymost Muslims today. Similar to Jewish names, the "ben" is replaced by "bin" for males,"binte", "binti" or "ibnu" for females to Muslims. Sometimes, names include "Al-", "Ali-","-allah", "-lah/-llah" or "-ullah" as it means "a servant to god" or "god's servant". Theywould sometimes indicate the place they or their child live in.

Titles for God in the Old Testament

Christian apologists claim that the strongest argument for the deity of Christ is the onethat most incensed Jesus' contemporaries: He personally referred to himself using theOld Testament names and titles for God, and also allowed others to call him by those

appellations of deity. This practice so tremendously angered the rulers of the Jews thatthey tried to kill him forblasphemy.[1] The Jewish authorities had no doubt that thisGalilean teacher was claiming to be Almighty God, and also allowing others to do sounchallenged)-something those religious authorities considered to be flagrantblasphemy.[1] What then are God's titles and what is his personal name? The OldTestament contains names and titles of Jesus in more indirect ways, primarily inprophecy. The study of these names is called christology. Because of the sheermagnitude of the list I could produce from the Old Testament, this list will be confined toChrist's titles based on his chief role in each book of the Old Testament. God's titlesinclude the following:

Genesis (Creator) Genesis 1:1, Isaiah 44:24, John 1:10, Colossians 1:16-17

Exodus (Passover Lamb) Exodus 12:1-11, 1 Corinthians 5:7
