INTRODUCTIONHELLO, MY NAME IS JESSICA MATTHEWS AND I AM A GRAPHIC DESIGNER.
I graduated from Durham College with an Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design. During my 3rd year of college I had the opportunity to complete an internship with Reader’s Digest Magazine. This was an experience I will never forget, I built a whole new skill set and was able to utilize my knowledge and compassion in a professional environment. I was able to learn from those above me, make mistakes, and learn how to fix them. I am sure this experience is why I still share the same love for design today. In addition to design I also share a strong love for photography, fitness and sports.Every designer has their strengths, and weakness’, their preferred type of design and their passions. For me, I love editorial and layouts. While I was looking for my internship magazines were all I looked for. I limited myself to what I thought I was good at. Once it came time to find a real job fresh out of school I didn’t have this option. Which for me, worked in my favour. I was hired in a print shop, where you get to deal with every different aspect of design, at any given moment of the day. Whether it’s business cards, flyers, websites, wide format signs, banners you name it, we could do it. I learned a lot about myself at this time, I learned that I was capable of way more than I gave myself credit for. I let myself explore my weakness’ and grow as a designer. This is where I gained basically all of my print production knowledge, things I had never even thought of learning. To me everything is your weakness until you explore it well enough.

Wedding stationary set for a fictional couple.This wedding stationary set has an elegant, but fun feel to it.I have experimented here with full bleed, as well as no bleed and also played with the sizes of each piece of stationary in the set.

Taste of Home Canda Media Kit.This Media Kit was designed for Taste of Home Canada, during my Internship at Reader’s Digest. Taste of Home Canada is one of many magazines within Reader’s Digest.
I have included a couple different types of layouts used within the Media Kit. In these layouts I am demonstrating the use of text over full bleed photo backgrounds, the overall unity of pairing images together that share similar colours for an overall balance, and the use of large amounts of crucial information, in a organized table format.

Sunday dinner
Versatile Vinaigrette I brought this to a potluck to dress a bowl of mixed greens, and everyone gobbled it up, then demanded the recipe! It’s so easy to make, everything goes into a jar that’s shaken to mix.

PreP time: 10 min Cook time: 10 min 8 servings
1 ripe mango
2 tomatoes, finely chopped
1 scallion, finely chopped
1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger 15 mL
Juice of 1 lime
2 Tbsp maple syrup 30 mL
4 x 7 oz ham steaks 200 g trimmed of fat
bunch of watercress
Teriyaki Salmon with Sweet PotatoThe fish can be broiled or cooked on a barbecue instead of put in the oven.

PreP time: 10 min Cook time: 15 min 4 servings
1 Tbsp teriyaki sauce 15 mL
1 Tbsp maple syrup 15 mL
1 Tbsp whole grain mustard 15 mL
4 x 5 oz salmon fillets, 150 g skin removed
2–3 sweet potatoes
1 Preheat the oven to 450°F/230°C. Set four 2/3 cup/150 mL ramekins on a baking tray and put 1 Tbsp/15 mL maple syrup in each dish. (Do not grease the dishes.)
2 Put the cornstarch in a bowl and add the egg yolks with the remaining maple syrup and the lemon zest. Stir the egg yolks and syrup into the cornstarch until smooth, then gradually stir in the cream until thoroughly combined.
3 Put the egg whites into a separate, thoroughly clean and dry bowl. Whisk the whites using an electric mixer until stiff but not dry. Using a large metal spoon, fold the whites into the cream mixture until well combined. Take care not to stir out the air.
4 Divide the mixture among the rame-kins and bake for about 10 minutes or until the mixture is puffed up, browned and just set. Have small plates or sau-cers ready for the hot dishes. Serve immediately.
1 Using a sharp knife, halve, pit and peel the mango. Chop finely, then mix with the tomatoes and green onion.
2 Add the ginger and half the lime to the chopped ingredients, stirring to mix evenly.
3 Turn on the broiler, or heat a grill to medium. Mix the remaining lime juice with the maple syrup and brush over the ham steaks.
4 Cook the ham steaks for 3–4 min-utes on each side, or until golden brown. Serve on a bed of watercress with a spoonful of the salsa alongside.

Maple and Mustard Salmon This super-fast marinade is delicious with salmon, especially on a bed of wilted spinach and crushed lima beans from your pantry shelf.

PreP time: 5 min Cook time: 6 min 4 servings
1 Tbsp canola oil 15 mL
1 Tbsp soya sauce 15 mL
1 Tbsp maple syrup 15 mL
2 tsp whole grain mustard 10 mL
grated zest and juice of 1 lemon
4 x 4 oz skinless salmon fillets 125 g
12 vine-ripened cherry tomatoes
1 In a shallow dish, mix together the vegetable oil, soy sauce, maple syrup, mustard and 1Tbsp (15 mL) of the lemon juice. Add the salmon and coat with the marinade. Set aside.
2 Cook the salmon in the heated ridged griddle or frying pan for 2–3 minutes on each side or until just firm and pink.
4 Add the tomatoes for the last 1–2 minutes of the cooking time.

V Magazine Re-design school project.During my 3rd and final year of college we were assigned a high-end magazine re-design. I figured with my passion for photography, my interest in fashion and my keen eye for layout I could produce an eye catching V Magaine layout!
In this project I have included a cover, and two editorial spreads. All photos seen in this layout were taken, and edited by myself. The model in these photos is one of my close friends and classmate, Michelle Vogrinec.

This project consists of Glade wallpaper shown on the Reader’s Digest website. A leaderboard as well as a big box advertisement . A series of pop surveys to find the right glade wax melt for you., as well as a facebook advertisement for the wax melts.

A direct marketing piece designed to advertise and promote Tim Hortons and their products.I created this direct marketing piece in order to promote the History and products of Tim Hortons.The direct marketing piece is an image in the shape of a Tim Hortons cup that looks completely real, it is delivered with a Tim Hortons fabric sleeve around it. This sleeve serves as a marketing piece for the recipient to keep and use on their next cup. Inside the pamphlet shaped as a coffee cup is history and information about Tim Hortons, the last page contains a coupon for any free hot beverage.
