KITCHEN & BATH DESIGN This course challenges students to use planning requirements to create universal and accessible designs. Construction, electrical, and basic plumbing are taught with emphasis on these applications within residential kitchens and baths. Industry relevant nomenclature and product information are used to create technical documents and custom aesthetic solutions.

This was an actual client scenario in which the client was willing to have the south wall of the kitchen extended 2 feet. This design accomplished all client wish-list items detailed on the previous page. The newly designed kitchen was warmly embraced by the client as both functional and beautiful.

RESIDENTIAL ENVIRONMENTS This studio course explores various types of residential dwellings as they relate to diff erent inhabitants. Project work applies the programming and design development phases of the residential design process to include information gathering, needs analysis, concept and spatial development, and FF&E selections based on research and suitability.

The principle objective of this project was to design a multi-generational family home interior that synthesized the group needs and preferences with those of individual members. Critical ingredients of success included the application of ergonomic and anthropometric knowledge as well as reinforcement/expansion of design theory through the selection of materials, fi nishes, lighting and furnishings.

The Jali-Saddle Lamp is a fusion of Tunisian and Indonesian styles, combining native elements from these two countries in a truly unique piece. The base is painted iron. The shade mimics the Minangkabau saddle roofs seen throughout Indonesia.

The Java Hall Cabinet with Mirror is inspired by the magnifi cent Borobudur Temple in Java. The design embeds elements unique to Indonesia, such as the Komodo Dragon, Star Fuit and Wayang Kulit shadow puppets. The painted and carved front wood panels are often seen on Minangkabau homes throughout Indonesia. The combination echoes the history of Indonesia, while embracing the beauty in contemporary design.

The Zillij Side Chair is inspired by traditional elements of Islamic architecture including the horseshoe arch, black and white striping known as ablaq, mosaic tile work, or zillij, and the pumpkin shaped qubba found in many mosques and shown here beneath the seat. The construction is enamel painted wood with ceramic tile inlay. This magnifi cent chair exhibits character and rich, comforting tradition.

HISTORY OF DESIGN III This studio presents an in-depth study of the architecture and furniture developments of several major non-western cultures. Religious, philosophical, and social beliefs and customs are emphasized while construction methods, building materials, motifs, fabrics, and decorative arts are explored. Projects include the development of furniture and accessory designs created through the fusion of world styles.

ADVANCED RESIDENTIAL DESIGN This senior elective studio covers the total process of residential design from concept development through two- and three-dimensional presentations. Building codes, covenants, and restrictions create the guidelines for solutions. Knowledge of sustainable practices, residential business practice, construction methods, materials and custom interior architectural details are applied in concert with the guidelines in the fi nal design.

SPECIALTY DESIGN This senior level studio course covers the physical and psychological factors that impact hospitality environments. Students are expected to graphically demonstrate original and viable solutions. Research on human factors, codes, and lighting are combined with product mix and multi-sensory aspects of design to influence perceived value to the customer.

Drawing inspiration from a boutique hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this elegant restaurant design infuses splashes of rustic warmth, encouraging an atmosphere of relaxation and conviviality.

niche, and cultural research• Research / apply code and ADA requirements• Consider unique space planning for boutique restaurants: variety of

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the integration of computer technology into the design process and introduction BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology.

PROJECT OBJECTIVEThe main objective of this exercise was to reverse engineer an existing built-in furniture piece down to the support structure in order to understand its construction. From the photo selected, the team of two students produced hand sketches that were then built into an AutoCAD 3D model. The model included the furniture piece, its structural components, and finish elements. Once the 3D model was built, 2D drawings were produced to dimension and annotate using drafting standards and industry conventions, thus producing a detail set for the unit.
