This investigation seeks to uncover and strengthen the relationship between economy, ecology and community in Greenville, Mississippi. Current fl ood protection systems deny access to the Mississippi River, to which the micropolitan city is inextricably linked: architecturally, levees fail daily by fostering placelessness. An urban catfi sh farm grounded in the historic downtown and extending out into the river is the proposed means of restoring Greenville to a thriving, connected, healthy and sustainable community.

This team project with Clayton Kaul (M.Arch 2013) seeks to maximize the visual connections between the Industrial Canal and Downtown in New Orleans with a minimized footprint. A structural double skin encloses the full aquatic center, hotel, spa and restaurant, constantly creating a dialogue between programs. The public raised landscape continues into the building’s as a green wall, creating a permeable sense of space. coconcncepept t didiagagrarammcoconcncepeptt dididididiagagagagrarararammmm

ACSA Steel Competition Entry
Spring 2012 Jonathan Tate, critic, Tulane
The New Orleans Culinary Arts College considers the quality and quantity of food sources; many areas in the city lack healthy, affordable foods. Here, food moves in from the garden, through the kitchens and out via a wide network of food trucks. NOCAC challenges spans via displacement and structural networks, transferring load into the core structure. Exposed trusses emphasize relationships between core and extrusions. Shifted adjacencies on the facade deny the rigidity of traditional structure. 1/32” model

URBANbuild 7 Fall 2011 Byron Mouton and Tom Holloman, critics, Tulane
A proposal for the design build program URBANbuild, this 1,200 square foot, 3 bedroom / 2 bath scheme is based on maximizing the relationships between living and sleeping. The design gives equal consideration to indoor and outdoor spaces. The Courtyard House responds to the climatic and cultural situations of New Orleans and provides opportunities for comfortable occupation on numerous lot sizes by extending and stretching the amount of outdoor courtyard space.

“Guardians of the Flame” Build
Fall 2011 Seth Welty and Scott Ruff, critics, Tulane
As a part of the City Center at Tulane University, the Guardians of the Flame Museum is a non-profi t design/build project in New Orleans’ Upper Ninth Ward. The space, designed for a Mardi Grad Indian Tribe, seeks to promote local culture, literacy and youth community involvement. Over the course of the semester, 14 undergraduate and graduate students worked on site to excavate, survey, pour concrete, lay footings, frame, install sheathing and detail.

This one-year project uncovers layered transformations of public space within Turkish capital cities as social, political and economic networks morphed under a series of regimes. Visual fi eldwork and analysis raise questions of interrelationships between political authority, national identity and spatial organization over time. Initiating cross cultural dialogue between American and Turkish fl aneurs, the projects ranged from sketches, collages, photographs, 2D and 3D mappings, backgammon boards and juxtaposed photo joiners.

“Re-Wild Re-Wonderful West Virginia”
Fall 2009 Betsy Roettger, critic, UVaUnderstanding the devastation of mountaintop removal coal mining, the studio looked for ways to expose and remediate energy consumption in the US. Kayford Mountain, re-imagined, becomes a productive community link., extending the ridge, forming a new peak and calling across the valleys. The barn houses livestock and harvested crops, and the soil is tilled to fi x nitrogen and acidity. The transect termination is capped by a housing and observation tower - a place to shape the future of West Virginia in a response to a post-mining world.

In pursuit of new modes of representation, this studio explored Grasshopper as a design tool for a new research facility. Initial diagrams interpreted stratigraphy as natural structure and inspired reconstruction of UVa in a responsive manner Mapping the school in relation to connectivity and density, the new facility gathers students with multi-programmatic spaces that bring together a range of disciplines. The logic of parametric modeling developed a subtractive, active and gridded land - creating a fi eld condition within Nameless Field.

In a focused six week exploration of Northeastern Italy, architecture students strengthened techniques for drawing, sketching and understanding urban spatial relationships. Immersion in the small Italian town, combined with eight hours of drawing each day, allowed strong comprehension of place - architecturally and culturally. Developing individual portfolio theses, “Urban Metamorphosis” seeks to expose the physical, historical and spatial layers embedded within the piazza.
