BOSS EBAND JS-8RecoRding
There are several elementsthat come together tomake a practical practice
tool/phrase trainer for guitarplayers. You need amplifiersimulation, playback andlooping of sound files withtempo control, together withsome form of recording facility.
All of these have been availablein the BOSS BR range ofmultitrackers for some time,
but the company has now takenthat technology and put it alltogether in a dedicated unitcomplete with speakers,describing the resulting eBandJS-8 as, the ultimate jam-alongcompanion for guitarists.
Getting started with theeBand is pretty easy just plugin, tune up using the onboardtuner, select a sound and startplaying. If you want to play
along with something simple,theres the onboard metronomeand the range of provided loopsthat are easily called up. Theseare either straight drum loopsor nicely constructed band-
style backing tracks in a varietyof musical styles and keys thatactually do entice you intoplaying along, especially if amatching guitar tone has beenloaded. If you want a differenttone, it can be easily changedand the level quickly tweakedto sit in with the backing track.The COSM sounds (BOSS/Rolands Composite ObjectSound Modelling technology)work great in any number ofstyles and playing feels reallynatural. The sound from thespeakers is clear and urprisinglyfull at sensible volumes.
On its own, without acomputer, the eBand is a finepractice aid for playing alongto pre-recorded tracks orrecording your own chordsequence to solo over, but theUSB connection greatly
increases versatility. To importsounds from a computer or usethe unit as an audio interface,
you have to install the Song ListEditor utility software andaudio drivers, but these are
loaded onto the included SDcard, are easily transferred tothe computer via USB cable andinstall in seconds.
With a large enough memorycard, you can store thousands of
your favourite songs, call themup and play along at will,making the eBand a fully loadedguitar karaoke jukebox. As anaudio interface, the eBandoffers several routing options,so you can record a guitar (or amicrophone) either dry or withthe full amp and effects sound,while choosing what you hearfrom the speakers. It also allowsre-amping, so you can use theonboard sounds to treat anypreviously recorded signals.
