Jess Lewis JTC SAYS (IT WAS) ONLY YESTERDAY For copyright reasons, we can’t give you a transcription of what Jess is playing on this recording, but if you want to jam over the backing track we can give you some advice! The basic chord progression for the “A” section goes like this… It’s basically an A minor progression, with a II-V-I leading back to the tonic chord (Am7) each time. Pretty much all of that points to one scale… A Aeolian, or natural minor (A B C D E F G). The only exception is the E7b9 which contains a G# note. You can quite safely ignore this and stick with Aeolian (it’s only for two beats, after all) but if you’re feeling adventurous, you could try a quick lick from E superlocrian (E F G Ab Bb C D). That’s a common scale for playing over altered dominant chords like 7b9, and it’s actually the 7th mode of F melodic minor. Jess plays through that progression four times, and the fourth time has a slightly different ending… That major 7th chord means you’ll need to switch to the A major scale there (A B C# D E F# G#). The “B” section starts at 1:25 and goes like this… WWW.JAMTRACKCENTRAL.COM

(IT WAS) ONLY YESTERDAY

For copyright reasons, we can’t give you a transcription of what Jess is playing on this recording, but if you want to jam over the backing track we can give you some advice!

The basic chord progression for the “A” section goes like this…

It’s basically an A minor progression, with a II-V-I leading back to the tonic chord (Am7) each time.

Jess plays through that progression four times, and the fourth time has a slightly different ending…

That major 7th chord means you’ll need to switch to the A major scale there (A B C# D E F# G#).

The “B” section starts at 1:25 and goes like this…

The best way to deal with this progression is in two-measure chunks. For the chords with the G in the bass, use G Mixolydian (G A B C D E F). These are exactly the same notes as we used for A Aeolian, right? They’re both modes of C major, but we’re calling it G Mixolydian now, because G feels like it’s working as a root note.

Alternatively, do what Jess does in the solo, and use G major pentatonic (G A B D E). All of this scale’s notes are also in the Mixolydian.

For the second half, use Bb Mixolydian (Bb C D Eb F G Ab) but be careful with that E7#9… some notes might work, but others will sound BAD. Either switch to E minor pentatonic (E G A B D) or try the Super-locrian (see above).
