JEWISH CULTURAL ARTS ART & CULTURE FILMS PERFORMANCES
TOBI KAHN; JEWISH ARTISTSTuesday, November 19, 7:30pmTobi Kahn is a painter and sculptor whose work has been shown in over 50 solo exhibitions and over 60 museum and group shows since he was one of nine artists selected to be included in the 1985 Guggenheim Museum exhibition, “New Horizons in American Art”. Works by Kahn are in major museums, corporate and private collections.
For over 30 years, Kahn has been steadfast in the pursuit of his distinct vision and persistent in his commitment to the redemptive possibilities of art. His lifelong observance of Orthodox Judaism and his commitment to outreach across denominational lines is evident in many of his works.
Mr. Kahn is both an artist and an educator. In addition to his work, he will be speaking about six other contemporary Jewish abstract artists including Mark Rothko, Julian Schnabel, Helen Frankenthaler and others. He is the author of many books about Jewish art and we will have a selection for sale for the holidays, which he will gladly sign.
COMEDY NIGHTSaturday, November 23, 8pmSponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet and Institute for Advanced Rehab at Friedwald House
Our last two festival comedy nights sold out! Don’t be left out — reserve your seats early and get ready to laugh!
Karen BergreenTwo huge benefits came with Karen Bergreen’s decision to leave behind a budding career as a corporate lawyer...one less lawyer and one more fine comedienne. A rising star on the New York comedy scene, Karen is quickly becoming recognized for her quirky persona and sharp intellect throughout the country. In a relatively short time, Karen has earned invitations to perform at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in
Aspen Colorado (twice), The Friars Club in New York City and The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Karen has also performed her stand up on television on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” and New Joke City with Robert Klein.
As an actress, Karen has been seen on a variety of commercials, independent films and NBC’s Law & Order. Off-Broadway, Karen was a regular revolving cast member in the hit show, “The J.A.P. Show.”
Jon FischA prolific monologist with universal appeal, Jon Fisch focuses on the idiosyncrasies of city living. After moving to NYC from his native Boston, he was chosen as one of Comedy Central’s Fresh Faces of Comedy and named one of Back Stage Magazine’s 10 Standout Stand-ups. Jon was a critical favorite at the prestigious Montreal “Just for Laughs” Comedy Festival as part of the “New Faces” showcase and the Club Series show “Dating It”. Following his impressive appearances, Jon was singled out by both the Hollywood Reporter and The Montreal Gazette as a “standout performer”.
Jon’s recent appearances on CBS’ “The Late Show with David Letterman” and NBC’s “Last Comic Standing 4,” (where he was the New York City Capital One Audience Favorite), have gained him wide recognition and a new legion of fans. Jon tours the country performing at theatres, clubs, colleges and corporate events and can be seen regularly in NYC at Gotham Comedy Club and The Comedy Cellar.
Johnny LampertJohnny Lampert is considered one of the premier comedians in the country. He is a regular at New York City’s and Los Angeles’ best comedy clubs including Carolines on Broadway, The Comic Strip and The Improv and has also made numerous television appearances on MTV, A&E, NBC, HBO “Comedy Showcase” a multitude of shows on Comedy Central and most recently on AXS TV’s Gotham Comedy Live! Johnny’s
four wildly successful appearances at Montreal’s “Just for Laughs” Festival led to his being named “Best Act” by The Montreal Gazette as well as the signing of a sitcom deal with Walt Disney Television. Johnny was also honored recently with, not one, but two of his routines being chosen for inclusion in the soon to be released book, “The Best Comedy Routines, Period” (Rugged Land Books, NY).
In the casinos, Johnny has appeared at Atlantic City’s Trump Plaza, Trump Castle, The Sands and The Claridge where he has worked with such stars as Dana Carvey, Michael Bolton, Chicago and Chris Rock. Johnny has also headlined the main room at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Casino.

AKA DOC POMUSSunday, November 10, 7pm RCC Cultural Arts CenterSponsored by Micki & Jim Leader and Leader & Berkon, LLP
Suspicious Minds, Viva Las Vegas, and This Magic Moment, are familiar songs to most of us, but what do you know about the writer behind these classic tunes? Doc Pomus composed over 1000 songs in his lifetime but his non-musician brother is arguably more famous. Doc’s story is one of tragedy, disappointment, success, riches, abuse, and ultimately renewal. Come see the movie to learn his real identity and enjoy some terrific music from the 50’s to the 80’s.

WAGNER’S JEWSThursday, November 21, 7:30pm JCC RocklandSponsored by Rockland ToyotaGuest Speaker: Hilan Warshaw, Writer and Producer
This is the 100th anniversary of the birth of the composer, Richard Wagner. A known anti-Semite, many Jews refuse to listen to Wagner’s music or attend concerts when his compositions are the featured pieces. Did you know that many of the young musicians he surrounded himself with were Jewish? Why did these musicians perform with him and why were they loyal to him? A fascinating, little known part of Wagner’s life will be told through this film written and produced by former Rocklander Hilan Warshaw.
AUTHORSYou do not have to read the books to enjoy these great events!
Books are available for sale!

Dr. Itzhak Brook In the Sands of Sinai
Some of the most compelling stories of life during wartime don’t always come from the soldiers; sometimes they come from those who are on the front lines treating the injured and the sick — army physicians. Join Dr. Itzhak
Brook, a veteran of the IDF and US Navy, who served during the Yom Kippur War in Israel and hear his moving account of his experiences and his perspective of the war. Purchase your lunch at the Fit Café or bring your own dairy lunch. JCC will supply refreshments and dessert.
Wednesday, November 6, 7:30pmCaroline Leavitt Is This Tomorrow
In 1950’s suburbia, what does it mean to be an outsider in a community? How do we keep loved ones safe? In this emotional story, divorced, sensual-without-meaning-to-be, Jewish single mother Ava rents a house with her 12-year-old son, Lewis, and struggles
to fit in and find her place in the neighborhood, especially after tragedy strikes. Award-winning author Caroline Leavitt will be talking about her latest novel and addressing the issues of grief, loss and bullying. Refreshments will be served.
All events will be held at JCC Rockland, unless otherwise noted.
We suggest purchasing tickets in advance, tickets are $2 more at the door.

KAREN LEVITOV; COLLECTING MATISSE AND MODERN MASTERS: The Cone Sisters of BaltimoreThursday, November 7, 1pmDr. Claribel and Miss Etta Cone were two Jewish sisters who began collecting Matisse and Picasso when they were unknown artists at the beginning of the twentieth century. By the 1930s they had amassed a collection of modern art by these artists as well as Cezanne, Renoir, Delacroix, Van Gogh and Gauguin that was one of the largest and best modern art collections in the United States. This talk reveals the sisters’ fascinating lives as they traveled abroad, befriending avant-garde artists and writers.
Karen Levitov is an independent curator. Previously, she was a curator at The Jewish Museum, where she organized exhibitions on the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, the contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley, the Cone Sisters of Baltimore and their collection of Matisse and Picasso, and Dutch Old Master paintings restituted to the heirs of Jacques Goudstikker. She has published many exhibition catalogues and has lectured widely.
BYOB, snacks will be provided.
