    NEW!

Cassie Jensen was chubby as a child, heavy as a teen and more than 100 pounds overweight as a young woman.

Today, shes simply a star.At Center Fitness at the JCC in West

Bloomfield, Cassie holds something of celebrity status. All the trainers and teachers stop to talk, and strangers love to hear her words of encouragement.

Great job! shell say to everyone, but especially those who may be moving a bit slow or who are just starting their road to good health. Youre going to make it!

Thanks to exercise and changing her eating habits, Cassie, 29, has lost 120 pounds.

I was a candidate for bariatric [weight-loss] surgery, she says. If I can do this, anyone can.

An American Sign Language interpreter with the Detroit Public Schools, Cassie is a native of St. Louis, Michigan. Soon after moving to Metro Detroit, she received a membership, provided by her condo association, to the JCCs fitness center.

At the time, Cassie weighed 265 pounds. The only meal she ate at home was breakfast; everything else came from fast-food restaurants. She slept a lot. She found it difficult to climb anything and sometimes even walk. But it was when she saw her daughter Helene, then 2 years old, start to imitate her cola drinking habits that Cassie decided she had to change.

I was a pop addict, she says. She would typically drink two large bottles (containing almost cup of sugar) in a single day. In one day! she repeats.

Her first step was replacing those

drinks with water into which she added a bit of flavoring.

Next, she began watching the amount of food she ate.

She still enjoys a diverse and delicious menu Nobody wants to eat just chicken and salad for lunch for the rest of their life! she says but she began measuring a single serving rather than simply helping herself to whatever she wanted.

She found substitutes for calorie- laden favorites (Heres a great root-beer float, she says happily: Just use diet root beer and Cool Whip!) and she learned to carefully limit rather than totally eliminate fatty foods.

Then she started working out, and with the combination of exercise and healthy eating, the weight came off really fast.

At Center Fitness, Cassie had a free consultation with trainer Michelle Silverstone. She learned how to use the equipment and began working out twice weekly with a trainer which she recommends because an expert can help target the specific areas where you need improvement.

She also decided to attend exercise classes (Basic Training on Monday

and Wednesday), which was hard. I was so embarrassed because of my weight, she says. I didnt want anyone to look at me.

But then she realized: Im the slowest person in this room, but Im moving a lot faster than someone just sitting on the couch.

She very quickly made friends with staff (Youre coming next week, right? says a teacher passing by) and with others on the fitness floor, and she saw the change not only in her body but in her spirit.

Working out at Center Fitness has really helped with her anxiety, she says. The first step is the hardest. But once you get going, exercise becomes your passion. After a workout, I feel happier.

Cassie continues her four-times-weekly workout, driving from Southfield to West Bloomfield and exercising while Helene stays at the Center Fitness childcare.

Of course it means time, but its totally worth it, Cassie says. Im a single mom. I understand the time thing. But you find time for what you want to do.

    AquaticsJCC WEST BLOOMFIELD

Underneath the Jewish Community Centerin West Bloomfield is a small room filled with red, white and blue pipes that are very thick or small, twist and turn, travel up and down and hold the key to the success of two of the JCCs most popular places.

To arrive, you must first go through locked doors and down a few very narrow steps. Youll hear a lot of whooshing and a loud whirring that makes normal conversation difficult.

Welcome to the room that ensures clean water to the JCCs indoor pool (filled with 202,000 gallons), outdoor pool (220,000 gallons), Rosen childrens pool (16,000 gallons) and two whirlpools (in the mens and womens executive locker rooms). It also houses the JCCs emergency sprinkler system.

The water is constantly rushing through a complex, computerized system to guarantee that it remains clean. The noisy pipes carry water through large containers, including one filled with 6,000 pounds of sand, which is not the same stuff on the beach but is, instead, very fine and shaped in square pieces that filter out tiny items (a broken piece off a bathing cap, for example) that might find their way into water. The sand does its work in a round, white container that resembles a golf ball for King Kong, should he take up the game.

Then theres the chlorine, which comes in tablets that building services and aquatics staff call the hockey pucks, since theyre both virtually the same size and shape. These pellets are dropped into another massive container through which the water passes.

The water is always churning around in the tubes, getting clean and then returning to the pool. There is

never a moment day or night ever when this complicated system is not at work.

Larry Jankowiski, of the JCCs Building Services team, and Ronda Brodsky, Center Splash director, are the experts on what it takes to keep the pools safe and in shape. In addition to actually understanding all the equipment and the chemicals, four times a week they take water samples to the Health Department to make sure that standards are always up to par. (Health Department staff also often stop by on unannounced visits.)

Above ground, too, staff is constantly making certain that the water is clean. Regular rituals include vacuuming with robots or manual equipment, which is done daily (twice a day in the busy summer), and adding handfuls of chlorine. The average person would say, It looks like Ronda is doing pool maintenance, but the real term is broadcasting the chemicals into the water.

One of the greatest mysteries in the world also can be solved with a quick look into the underground maintenance room. Every day, without fail, the aquatics team hears what might be called the Goldilocks porridge refrain regarding the pool water: Its too hot! or Its too cold!

In fact, as a thermometer reveals, the temperature is always the same: a comfortable 82 degrees.

ABOUT NIMROD SHAPIRAWhen he was only 5, Nimrod Shapira had a near-drowning experience when he fell into the swimming pool at a family event.

swimming and is dedicated to educating children and adults about water safety. Every day kids drown and die in the U.S., he says. Teaching kids to be safe and comfortable in the water is our first priority. Helping kids to be the best they can be and seeing them grow as swimmers is the most rewarding job I can ask for. From the DirectorBy Elaine (Hendriks) Smith

Art and PerceptionI went with my husband to the Diego & Frida exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Diego and Frida had a lot to say, and much of it was said here in Detroit while Diego was painting the now famous DIA murals and Frida was making a name for herself.

I am a huge fan of Diego and Frida and their artwork. Why?Because they werent afraid of where they came from, who they were, who they wanted to honor, their beliefs and what they saw as beautiful. I am moved by them and was so excited to see their work.

So why did one picture of them touch me to my core? Its the picture of them kissing on the scaffolding at the DIA.I think its their passion, which you can feel in their art, and their unwillingness to ever say anything negative about each other (even for the year they divorced). They were always devoted to each other and their art. They were never afraid of it. I respect that in them, and I look for it in others.

My husband is a beautiful person.Hes a nurse by profession, but in his heart a visual artist lives. I love walking with him through the DIA because hes fascinated by brush strokes and tiny details that others dont notice. He will get his nose so close to a painting or sketch that I will wonder if it will touch. He will look at a tiny pile of paint for the longest time.

Come find your magic at The Berman Center for the Performing Arts!

My favorite part of that?Watching him.I find that this is strange because I used to spend at least one day a week strolling around the DIA when I was a student at Wayne State University. I find peace and inspiration in all of the art there and love the visiting exhibits, but I find more beauty in watching my husband do the same.

A few months ago, I was talking to someone who is constantly telling me that hes not an artsy person. He repeatedly told me that he saw a pianist who was wonderful, and he wants very much to see her again.I wonder if he knows that when it comes to this pianist, he is an artsy person. And no, I havent told him.

My uncle just got married on a beach on Florida. I watched as family members of all ages and backgrounds took beautiful ocean-side pictures and put them up on Facebook and Instagram. While scrolling through these photos, some of which could have been in a magazine, I wondered if people thought of the joy they had managed to capture while taking the pictures.

In my office at The Berman are three amazing photographs that people always assume I purchased, but actually my daughter took them for a high school class. They are moments frozen in time when she was inspired by their beauty. I wonder if she knows shes sharing that beauty with everyone who walks in my office.Life is surrounded by art.Its infused in everything. What I feel lucky about today? That I see it.

Thank you to all the Friends of The Berman for their support in preserving the arts through their generosity.

My Life with Autism By Malik Molloy

The topic of my speech is how my autism sometimes makes my life difficult. I want to tell you about some of my symptoms that make it hard for me to do many things, but especially to socialize and make friends.

My autism is a result of the fact that my brain is wired differently. All the connections (like cords to different computers) for speech, memory, hearing, balance, taste, smell, are connected in different ways in my brain. This is why I have some symptoms which are a problem for me.

One problem is my hearing. I have supersensitive hearing, hearing all the noises at once in any place I am in. Yet if you are standing in front of me and say something like Did you see the Super Bowl on Sunday? only part of those words enter my brain and I may only hear part of what you said like Did Super Bowl Sunday. The words get all jammed. Its like a bad connection on a cell phone and I have to try to figure out what you just said. This may make you think Im deaf or stupid, but it is just the way my brain works.

My autism also makes it hard for me to speak. I may know what I am trying to say in my head, but my brain cant find the right words quickly enough or even at all. I am always saying I cant explain or Im saying it wrong. I also sometimes say the wrong thing then have to say Im sorry.

I also can look at somebody, and I wont be able to read their facial expression or their body language. I cant tell by looking at someone if they are unhappy, angry, sad, nervous or bored. I dont understand teasing. If someone comes up and playfully gives me a tap on the arm, I may think they are trying to hurt me. If you give me a compliment, I may think it is fake and you are feeling sorry for me. When Im in a group of people who are laughing, I cant tell whether they are laughing at something they said or laughing at me. I dont know how to get other people to talk about something they are interested in. I can only talk about things I know.

I have other symptoms that may make me seem strange or different. I am very sensitive to touch. This means that I cant wear clothes that are rough. It also means that if I get hit or hurt, the pain feels a lot worse. I also have an acute sense of smell, and some smells are so strong they may make me feel sick. My sense of taste is also supersensitive, and this means that I am very picky about the kinds of food I will eat. My sense of balance and coordination is very limited, and this makes it hard for me to write or play sports.

But all of these symptoms dont mean that I am not smart or aware of lots of things like everyone else. I can look at a list of spelling words once, then get 100% on a test. I can go on a computer, and read and search and type just like other people.

The hardest thing is that the symptoms caused by my autism are like a shell around me keeping me from being able to make the friendships I would like to have. The reason I like to play video games on my computer so much is that when I am playing with others, no one knows that I have autism. They cant see or hear me, and I can type in my responses as I play. To the others that I am playing with, I am just like every other person.

Malik Molloy has been participating in the Kids All Together program since he was 8 and is now a freshman at Clawson High School.

Q Where can you can find a collection of mosaics showing some of Jewish historys greatest figures?

A On the lower level of the JCC in West Bloomfield. The mosaics all in black, white and grey include Israeli author S.Y. Agnon, Albert Einstein, Marc Chagall and Saul Bellow and hang on the walls across from the Jewish Ensemble Theatre. The artist was Harry Lui (1914-2005), a native of Berlin who fled to New York to escape the Nazis. A family friend helped Lui find a home in Flint, where he worked as a translator and designer. Lui spent the last years of his life in Southfield.

Q Where will you see a huge collection of folders, papers and boxes that chart an organization that has been part of the JCC for more than 65 years?

A That group would be the Jewish Parents Institute, and its long and fascinating history is chronicled in a collection of everything from papers to cookbooks in the West Bloomfield JCCs Arts, Culture and Education department. Founded in 1947 (when Harry Truman was president!), JPI is a secular organization open to all kinds of families; it includes a Sunday school and holiday celebrations. Today, Marilyn Wolfe serves as head of the JPI.

Fun, curious and fascinating facts about the JCCs in West Bloomfield and Oak Park

Q What is the large statue near the front entrance of the JCC in West Bloomfield?A The statue is called The Last Kaddish, a memorial to victims of the Holocaust, and it was created by Aharon Bezalel (1926-2012).Born in Afghanistan, Bezalel settled in Israel with his family in 1938. As a boy, he studied gold and silver crafting and miniature carving. He also studied sculpture in Jerusalem and established the arts department at the Seligsberg Vocational School, where he taught for 20 years. Bezalel held exhibits in Israel, New York and Paris and was the author of To Leave a Blessing - Memories of a Jewish Boy from Harat, Afghanistan. The Last Kaddish features a collection of tall, haunting figures that are also faceless, because, the artist said, faces may change for each one who views the figures, but the neshoma (soul) remains steadfast. To each of us, the figures in the memorial are or should be our Jewish mishpochah (family), for their soul is our soul, and together we are the survivors, which The Last Kaddish symbolizes. To see a smaller version of the sculpture, come to the JCC lobby, just past the Janice Charach Gallery.

Get rid of all that old junk you know you need to clean up (Trust us: you will make your spouse/partner/mother VERY happy!)

Save the Earth by recycling all this stuff instead of adding to a landfill! Turn your trash into $$$ to benefit the JCC!

    COME CLEAN,

    BE GREEN PROJECT!

For more information, please contact Randy Gavorin at

    248.432.5452 or [email protected].

    Thank you!

Youve heard about the proverbial elephant in the room.

But what about the elephant in the landfill? Or rather, the lack of one.

About eight months ago, thanks to IT Director Randy Gavorin, the JCC initiated the Come Clean, Go Green recycling initiative. The project takes old electronics and metals, grinds them down in shredders and then sells the small pieces to manufacturers. All proceeds are used to support JCC programming.

To date, the JCC has recycled more than 7 tons of material, which is equal to about 7 CARS or ONE ELEPHANT. And boy, have we seen some interesting stuff! Randy reports that the most popular item

making an appearance at least once a week is the microwave. Among the weird and wonderful treasures that have turned up in our recycling bins: A slide projector from the 1950s; a coffee grinder; toaster ovens; web TVs; and plenty of lamps.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to bring items in and help us save the earth!Got something to donate? See flyer at left for a complete list of what we can accept.

Please bring your items to the front desk in the main lobby of the JCC in West Bloomfield.

    Drop-off times are Monday-Thursday, Saturday and Sunday: 8:30 a.m.-9 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m.
