Jean-Claude Carrière’s

Mahabharata An intimate retelling of the world’s greatest story

One of the greatest storytellers of our time- Jean-Claude Carrière, tells one of the greatest stories of all time- The Mahabharata, at the majestic Paramount Theater. The production is scheduled for October 25 and October 26, 2014.

Accompanied by a musician and a dancer, Jean-Claude holds the audience captive for a magical 90 minutes, as he tells his adaptation of The Mahabharata to a new generation of listeners, as a bard telling a story on stage, reprising the way it might have been performed in ancient India as an oral epic.

Jean-Claude Carrière’s relationship with The Mahabharata is 30 years in the making. Working with long time collaborator Peter Brook, Jean-Claude created a 9-hour theatrical adaptation of The Mahabharata, as well as a 5-hour film version. The theatrical version premiered in 1985 in Paris, and then opened in New York in 1987 at the BAM, both to highly acclaimed and critical success. In working on these adaptations, Jean-Claude spent over a decade in India tracing the Mahabharata’s roots, geography and relevance, and has over the course of the last 30 years developed a deep, unique and personal relationship with this grand epic. It is this relationship that makes the Story Telling Event all the more compelling.

Given the importance of the Story and the legendary status of the Story-Teller, this production will strongly resonate with a wide range of audience of all ages and nationalities, and particularly the South Asian community, Francophiles and patrons of the theater.

The Mahabharata Itihaasa – It Happened Thus

The Mahabharata is arranged around a central dynastic struggle for sovereignty between two groups of cousins, the Kauravas and the Pandavas, culminating in the great battle of Kurukshetra, which marks the beginning of the Hindu age of Kali Yuga - the forth and final age of mankind.

Besides its epic narrative of the Kurukshetra war, the Mahabharata contains a trove of philosophical and devotional material including the gospel of Hinduism, the Bhagavad Gita. Told as a local tale through the length and breadth of India and its neighboring countries (as far as Indonesia), the Mahabharata is the definitive expression of the “Indian” way of life.

An Epic by any other name: More than 2000 years old, the Mahabharata is roughly ten times the size of the Iliad and the Odyssey combined. Its longest version consists of over 100,000 shlokas or over 200,000 individual verse lines (each shloka is a couplet), and long prose passages.
