The auction industry has sur-vived the transition into the age

of computers. In the mid-1990s,the speedy one-upsmanship

of auctions burst into an online format.

Since then, auctions have been morepopular than ever – lacking the auc-tion chant, perhaps, but retaining that

hyper-competitive, nerve-racking na-ture.

Oberfoell Auctioneers is one auctioncompany that has ourished in thenew era. Four years ago, Don Ober-

foell, the owner of Oberfoell Auction-eers in Buhl, created an auctioningwebsite called Do-Bid.com. The family

run, 30-year-old company launched intocyberspace, with a website designed to

bring buyers and sellers together from nearand far. The website is akin to consumer-to-consumer selling sites like eBay, but it

comes with the rules of an auction built in.Now, many who were restricted from auc-

tioning can give it a try – and they can doit from home, sitting at the computer.

“Not everyone has enough assets to sup-

port a live auction,” Oberfoell says. A sellerusing Do-Bid.com, on the other hand, canauction off as little as one signicant asset.

There are no haggling buyers, no travelcosts, and no security risks. The service of-

fers targeted marketing strategies so the

right people know about the right auctions.And since the auctions are online, bidders

can hail from anywhere.

Buyers on Do-Bid.com are allowed to bid

on multiple items at once, increasing po-tential wins, and the website features suchtools as group-extended bidding and Au-

toBid to make the process easier.

The website has proven itself a hit. In thefour years since Oberfoell founded Do-Bid, the sales volume at Oberfoell Auction-eers has increased rapidly, doubling in the

website’s rst year. The company has sincemaintained an annual increase in sales ofat least 25 percent.

Do-Bid.com is so effective that other auc-tioneers have become afliates of Ober -

foell. As afliates, they list their auctions onthe website to take advantage of Do-Bid’sexpansive bidder base. “No auctioneer

wishes that another auctioneer has a badauction,” Oberfoell says. Oberfoell Auc-tioneers also offers their afliates individu-

alized training and marketing strategies,increasing the probability of satisfactoryauctions for buyers and sellers.

The key to Oberfoell’s business strategy, hesays, is marketing. His company uses every-

thing from e-mail to AM radio to postcards,employing a high-impact strategy.

This way, the word about Do-Bid.com getsaround to nancial institutions, businesses,

government agencies, and law rms so thatbidders can nd an enormous and variedarray of items listed for auction. They cannd cars, trucks, business liquidations, es-

tates, antiques, snowmobiles, ATVs, boats,rearms, household items, coins, jewelry,sporting goods, heavy equipment, and

more, with the assets constantly changingevery week.

Minnesota. But Oberfoell wants to makesure sellers get the highest possible returnsfor their items, which means deciding be-

tween live auctions and Do-Bid.com.

If a seller’s lots are attractive to locals,

then an on-site auction could be the bestmethod. Ultimately, however, most of the35 to 40 auctions they hold per month are

online. Selling online tends to increase thecompetition most optimally, ensuring sell-

ers the best possible outcomes.
