Biography/History:

E C Foster, a native of Canton, Mississippi, was employed as professor of History

at Jackson State University. He was chairman of the Faculty Senate and served on a

number of university committees. He was Director of Black Studies at Jackson State

University from 1971 through 1973; he was also adjunct professor for the San Francisco

Theological Seminary (Spring 1972). His publications include articles and book reviews

in Freedomways, Close-Up, and Crisis in addition to authoring The New Social Studies

for the Slow Learner (1969) and The Americans: A History, which was accompanied by

a student work book, teacher’s manual, testing component, and audio-visual-kit (1970,

1975).

Dr. Foster is the retired interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Tougaloo

College and Associate Graduate Dean, Jackson State University, where he was

responsible for the leadership and day-to-day operation of the Graduate School. He is

married to Velvelyn Foster, Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Jackson State

University.

He also did research on the “Race Relation Views and Attitudes of Living Afro-

Mississippians Born in the 19th

Century.” His scholarly interests include American urban

and social history, as well as Black Studies generally.

Dr. Foster’s experiences included two years of military service in the United States

Army (1961-1963), history teacher in Natchez, Mississippi (1964-1965); community

organizer in Pittsburgh, PA (1965-1966); and public school teacher in Pittsburgh, PA

(1967-68, January-June, 1969). Hs educational background includes a BS from Jackson

State University (1964); MA and Ph.D. degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University (1967,

1970 respectively); and post-doctoral study in West Africa under sponsorship of the

African-American Institute and the United States Office of Education (Summer, 1970).

Scope and Content:

This collection includes correspondence, financial documentation, programs, and

miscellaneous records of Dr. E C Foster’s many years as an educator, administrator, and

city councilman.
