To all our guests,You’ve been very

patient with all of our construction and renovations in the last year or so. You’ve put up with changing traffic patterns, closings and openings, and many changes, all without seeing very much of what it’s all about.

Now, you can finally begin to see what our Casino and Hotel are going to look like as various projects near completion.

We’ve put together a series of artist renderings of the changes coming to our property. You can see them on the big screen in the lobby, on the digital screens throughout the Casino, and on our website.

We’ll be updating these images as they become available, but you can already see what the new Casino exterior, Dreamcatcher’s Club, Cashier Cages, and some of the restaurant areas will look like.

If all goes well, the section of the Casino that has been closed will reopen by the end of this year, followed by exciting changes to the Eagle’s Nest and Dalton Town Hall areas.

We look forward to re-opening the deluxe

rooms and Ballroom section of the Hotel later this year, after which we will begin work on the tower section of the Hotel.

Our goal is a truly Rancheria Style® Casino, one that is even more comfortable, convenient, and, of course, fun. It’s taken 25 years, but we’re almost there. Thanks for sticking with us.

Cordially,

Rich HoffmanCEO, Jackson Rancheria

A Message from CEO Rich Hoffman

Celebrating 25 Years of Loyal PlayersSharon Palmer

I worked at Jackson Rancheria in 1985 when it first opened and remember the Miwuk blessing of the building on our first day.

I remember Margaret as a wonderful person to work for and how she always remembered you even after you left her employment.

I enjoyed working with the Tribal members and learning their customs and games. I especially remember Adam Dalton teaching me all the “bad words” in the Miwuk language. He was a teenager then and a lot of fun.

I have a lot of memories from working there and have fun now going to the casino to gamble.

Jimmie QuinoneS Jr.

I remember the early days, when there was a game called Tutti Fruitti, where you had to get all the cherries on the screen that you could. My mom (Mary) and I were hooked on that game. It was so much fun.

So every time mom would feel sad and blue, we would head for her favorite game, Tutti Fruitti. If you could have seen her face when she hit 18 cherries out of 24 and won $221, it was priceless!

I’ve got Dreamcatcher’s Club® card number eight and my mom has number nine and we would not trade them for anything.

By Barbara BraaschSutter Creek, the self-dubbed

“Jewel of the Mother Lode,” never shines brighter than when spring loans it a green hillside backdrop dotted with wildflowers.

With through traffic diverted by the Highway 49 bypass, it is easy to visit and easier to see why Sunset magazine described Main Street as “quite possibly the prettiest you’ve ever seen.”

The lone reminder of what were some of the deepest, and richest mines in the Mother Lode is the operating Sutter Gold Mine at the north edge of town, which includes Leland Stanford’s former Lincoln Mine. The site offers guided tours deep underground and a chance to pan for gold “dust.”

Stop by the Visitor Center (71A Main Street) to pick up events calendars, illustrated walking guides, and shopping, dining, and tour information. A free 30-minute overview of Gold Rush history is offered daily at 10 a.m. by Gabby’s Tours with one-day notice. Lodging

brochures include charming Victorian-style inns, the nicely renovated American Exchange Hotel, and, if you’re bringing a pooch, Hanford House’s separate “doggie suite.”

Plan a couple of hours for browsing downtown. Even repeat visitors will make new discoveries. The handsome balconied buildings that once sold miners supplies and provisions now hold art galleries (Hidden Loft Studio, 21 Eureka Street, is the latest), boutiques, unique shops, coffee houses, restaurants, and wine-tasting rooms as well as a vintage ice cream store, and an active theater with weekend performances.

On Saturdays Chaos Glassworks artist David Hopman demonstrates glass-blowing techniques he uses to produce dazzling vases and dinnerware (121a Hanford Street).

Spring’s scheduled events include the 8th Annual Trash to Treasures Street Fair and Automotive Swapmeet on May 29,

If it’s the first weekend in June it’s time for the annual Italian Picnic and Parade, one of the longest running events in the Mother Lode.

This family-friendly event begins on Friday, June 4 when the booths and carnival open at 5 p.m. Entry to the Italian Picnic Grounds on Highway 49 in Sutter Creek is free, parking is $1.

The weekend features dancing and music, booths, bingo, a beer and wine pavilion, great food and bocce ball. Friday night is kids night with reduced prices on all rides.

And of course the Italians are certain to provide good eating, with everything from a six-course chicken and ravioli dinner on Saturday night to a tri-tip barbecue on Sunday.

The bocce ball courts are open to the public on Friday and Sunday with lessons, contests, and general fun. A professional tournament will be held on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

The annual parade will be held on Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m. on Main Street in Sutter Creek.

For more information visit italiansociety.net.

Hikers, bikers, and drivers will find spring a great time to take the back roads between Sutter Creek and Drytown. Turn off Highway 49 at Amador City Road and veer left onto Stringbean Alley to reach Amador City; continue on Turner Road to go to Drytown.

Sutter CreekContinued from page 10

Holly Richardson is a tenacious individual. It took her a while to get a job here, and longer to get the job she really wanted, but she stuck it out and now happily oversees the Retail Department.

Born in China Lake, CA, her family moved around some until she was nine, then settled in Sutter Creek. Her father was a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer in Santa Rosa when he discovered the Sutter Creek area and requested a transfer.

She graduated from Amador High School and then studied Retail Merchandising at a private, all-girl vocational school in Sacramento.

“Then I took a year off to ski,” she recalls fondly. “I lived and worked at Kirkwood.”

Then it was time to go to work, so Holly returned to Santa Rosa where she started her retail career. She worked for a variety of companies over the years, including Sears, The Fashion, Smith’s Shoes, RB Furniture, and others.

When she returned to Amador county, she says she knew she wanted to work at the Casino. “I knew people

who worked at the Casino, including my brother (Rick Howard). I knew it was a company going somewhere, knew it would grow, and knew it had endless possibilities.”

She applied for various positions for a year. “I just kept applying for anything I felt I was qualified for, kept making a nuisance of myself. I was willing to work any job.”

She had accounting and bookkeeping skills, in addition to her retail experience.

Her luck finally changed when she got a call from Rich Hoffman, who is now CEO but was Director of Marketing at the time. He was looking for an assistant. She applied and got the job.

“Our office was up on the hill where the Little Oak Learning Center is now, in a double wide trailer,” she says. “We had a great view from up there, got to watch all this (the Casino) being built. It was like watching an erector set go up.”

She worked for Rich for about ten months when the Manager and Supervisor of the Gift Shop both left suddenly. This was her dream job. She applied, interviewed and got the position of Retail Manager.

”We had no sooner sealed the deal than they told me I had an appointment that day with a vendor. So I hit the floor running. With both management people gone, there were these six cashiers wondering who is this gal and what’s she going to do. They were a good crew. They knew their jobs, but since there was no one left in management,

no one knew how to do many things.”

Since then she has overseen tremendous growth and change in the Retail Department. “It’s astounding to watch the growth. We’ve grown by leaps and bounds. It’s like we caught a wave and got to ride it. We just grew and grew.”

In addition to Kesler’s Mercantile, she has also operated four other venues here - G Gallery, the Sweet Spot in Dalton Town Hall, the Outpost (a moveable cart), and the Hotel Gift Shop. Right now the department is down to just Kesler’s but hopes to have the Hotel Gift Shop reopened sometime later this year.

When not looking for interesting new items for the Gift Shop, Holly likes to spend time with her family. She has a grown son and a daughter graduating from high school this year and going off to college. And she recently became engaged.

Celebrating 25 Years

15

Karmère Vineyards and Winery is a result of five generations of farming and a love of the land and rural life.

Co-founder Marilyn Hoopes grew up on an Idaho potato farm. At age 26, she moved to Amador County and fell in love with the bucolic Shenandoah Valley and with Todd Pickens who had recently moved from the Bay area to become a “back to the lander”.

They made their home in Jackson, and in 1990 bought their first piece of property in Shenandoah Valley, a 17 acre parcel adjacent to Terre Rouge.

In 1994, they obtained the 89-acre Jameson Ranch, where the winery and tasting facility now exists. The name Karmère (pronounced car-mare) is in honor of Marilyn’s mother Karma Hoopes. Mère is French for mother.

Marilyn, an attorney, and Todd, an optometrist, are the parents of three grown children, Josh, Jared, and Hayley. All of the children are involved in the winery or vineyards. Todd continues to practice optometry and Marilyn works as a part-time

Administrative Law Judge while devoting the majority of her time to the winery and vineyards.

The first Zinfandel vines were planted in l994. Plantings of Zin, Syrah, Barbera, Viognier, Primitive and Nebbiolo have continued.

Karmère’s 67 acres of estate grown vines are grown in the rich Sierra Nevada decomposed granite soils on gentle slopes of 1,300 feet to 1,600 feet elevation. The combination of well managed vines and well drained hillsides restricts vigor producing two to four tons of grapes per acre. The cool summer nights and hot days are ideal for producing robust red wines.

Karmère vineyards are

sustainably farmed, typically using organic methods and Integrated Pest Management, which has minimal impact on the environment.

All the vineyards are named after the women in the family - the daughter, granddaughters and daughters-in-laws. In the case of the granddaughters, the vineyards were planted on the day or week they were born.

Karmère Vineyards and Winery is located at 11970 Shenandoah Road in Plymouth. The tasting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. For more information visit karmere.com or call 209-245-5000.
