In July 2008, nine architecture students and three community planners from Dalhousie University ventured to the Shoal Lake Cree Nation reserve in rural Saskatchewan. Over the course of two weeks, we collaborated with the community to develop a program and design for an Outdoor Classroom, ultimately building it. The shelter is now used for community events such as talent shows, and provides a space for Elders and youth to interact through teaching. The building process was a joint effort between students and residents to ensure the community now has the resources to teach others the building techniques used.

DESIGN
This project demonstrates an adapt reuse strategy for the abandoned waterfront forge in the historic UNESCO site of Lunenburg. A Heritage Center is found on the main level, the second floor will provide a relocation of the town library collection, and the top floor will serve as residence and studio space for visiting scholars. The additions and removals to the existing structure are represented by a series of threshold conditions, connecting old and new.

DESIGN
During the final semester of the Bachelor program, we designed a multi-purpose facility in downtown Halifax. The main requirement was a 24-hour bookstore, which became the central atrium space linking the remaining programs: theatre, fitness center, daycare, cafe, gallery, art supply store, language school, parking, media store, and residences. Views through curved floor openings draw the visitors eye upwards throughout the multiple spaces.

DESIGN
The community center study required a design for a rural coastal town, in this case Lower Prospect. The building was expected to accommodate a theatre and recreation area for up to 200 people, including kitchen facilities and meeting rooms. My design derives from the circulation routes I wanted the site ti have, one motion back towards the community, and the other towards the theatre and ocean. The circulation paths are marked within the structure by continuing the outer boardwalk into the space.

The structural bay was a group design/build workshop. We constructed a 1:5 model of a tree fan spanning system and tested it loads until collapse.

NATURALFINISHES
Through use of natural finishes such as clay plaster and milk paints, we designed and undertook an interior renovation of a local community group’s recording space.

Our studies focused on providing acoustical solutions to the space, and recycling an existing wine rack into shelving units for records.
