12th House - 2010
Starkly exposed, the 12th house sits precariously atop a silent hill. The structure gazes eagerly upward towards heaven whilst bowed stoically towards the earth.
The 12th house is the newest addtion to the housing commune south of the wall in Beijing China.
Emeshed in it’s context 12th house responds to cultural and enviromental forces in its conception and execution.

Ngatea Whatua - 2010
In the beginning ane offered mankind three baskets of knowledge - “Nga Kete-o-te-Wananga”. Within these baskets were the stories of creation. Living things are descended from the Gods, embodied within certain moun-tains, rivers and lakes.
Wairua the soul of the land ties the people to their context through ‘mana’ a spiritual connection. Using water, the essence of essence of life, con-nects the city physically, and spiritual-ly resulting in the following vision.

HyperKindy - 2011
The aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Christchurch has left thousands of homes in unlivable conditions. Due to projected population growths and the destruction of suburban infrastructure large numbers of families will be moving into the overtaxed housing stock within the CBD.
The question was then, how do we accomodate this new influx of people of a wider age demo-graphic.
The suburbs suffer from it’s own particular kind of alienation. Fortunately this is mitigated by the most powerful social hub; the school.
Built upon the idea that suburban families are often connected by their children, this project intends to synergise housing with childcare.
Borrowing successes from an idealised community such as appropriatable green space, streets, and school spaces for sporting and creative persuits, this scheme hopes to emphasise these shared values and common goals to create a ‘hyperlocal community which is cooperative and engaged.

Sunshine - 2012
Sunshine is a place filled with life and ener-gy, but juxtoposed with its cultural richness is a perception of danger and a dividedness in a physical sense and a social sense.
Creating a much needed pedestrian passage across the train tracks creates a link between 3 local schools allowing them to cooperate in an extra corricular urban farming program which creates a closed loop food economy and emmerses the youth in sustainable values.

Redmond Barry Retrofit - 2012
Redesign the envelope of the Redmond Barry Building with consideration to perfor-mance sustainability, life cycle, and construc-tability.
The hero facades utilise a double skill ETFE facade system which allows the facade to respond dynamically to climate through au-tomated openings which control ventilation and solar gain due to angular movements in the panel system. This results in a highly passive building with comfortable spaces within.

Victoria Regional Produce Market [VRPM] - 2012
From the perspective of a New Zealander Melbourne is a city of exploration. The main desires are curiosity and discovery, much like a feature of Victorian landscape, The Grampians.
A large mass, full of cracks, fissure, and openings which invite inves-tigation. Openings which often yield rewards and surprises for it’s explorers.

“For architecture to remain relevant it must engage with the forces that shape society. Architecture must interpret these forces into new modes of spatial experience or ‘affect’ (Moussavi, F, The Function of Ornament, 2006). Through this mechanism architecture is able to retain an authentic connection to contemporary culture.” - Finnian Warnock

The turn of the century has shaken many of the established paradigms of the 20th century. It is 2050 Hong Kong and population has peaked. The functions of the home have been squeezed out by shrinking domestic developments, and exported into the wider city. The means of production and communication are now ubiquitous and accessible. The 21st century will be the century of the com-munal, the collaborative, and the decentralised.
Architecture has responded to the evolution of life with sloth like speed. Servants to capital, the Hong Kong high rise privileges privacy and competition, discarded relics of past values.
A subversion of this typology is needed to en-able change to thrive. Boundaries must be blurred allowing activity to permeate the city. The subter-ranean urban condition is excavated where need-ed and parasitic programs plugged in wherever desired relieving the functional burdens of private space and allowing public life to percolate.
