Widening & deepening of the Automobile industry

• Number of cars worldwide will grow from 600mn in 2005 to 2.9bn in 2050. • China will have almost as many cars as the entire world has today. • India will have fleet of 400mn cars, 45 times the number today.

IMF estimates.

This presents a number of opportunities in this industry, especially in the area of electronics.

• In 2000 an average automobiles had 1 million lines of codes, 20 ECUs, electronics worth $400 and software constituted 2% of the cost of the car.

• By 2012 an average car is expected to have 100 million lines of codes, 50 ECUs, electronics worth $1100 and software cost at 13% of the cost of the car.
