Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, Welcome back to Term 4 and I trust that the holiday break was an enjoyable time. However, it is imperative that all students begin Term 4 positively and return to the routine of school from Day 1. This term is only short however, there are a significant number of important events scattered throughout the term that will require student, staff and parent involvement. It is critical that this involvement is forthcoming in order to ensure a positive and productive term for everyone. However, I must begin this edition of the Calling with the sad news of the passing of Mr John Kennedy. John was Principal of St. Patrick’s College from 1995 till 1999 and was the first lay principal of the College. John’s contributions to St. Patrick’s College were significant and he remained a strong supporter of the College. Kennedy House was named in recognition of John’s contributions to the College and he was very proud of this honour. John’s funeral was held over the holidays and was attended by many former and current members of the St. Patrick’s College Community. However, there were many who were unable to attend because of the holiday period. The College will acknowledge the valuable contributions of John Kennedy in a Memorial Service on Tuesday 19 October. Also, we will be celebrating the Mary MacKillop Liturgy on Thursday October 14. This liturgy will acknowledge the canonisation of Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop. The liturgy will begin at 11am and will be held in the Callan Centre. I take this opportunity to invite all members of the St. Patrick’s College Community, past and present, to attend this special liturgy. In the letter sent home over the holidays I detailed a number of significant events occurring during the course of Term 4. I draw your attention to some of these events that will be taking place over the next couple of weeks. Mimiki Race Day - Saturday 9 October. Bookings via website: mimikifoundation.org.au 2011 Orientation Night - Monday 11 October in the Callan Centre commencing at 6.00pm Spirit Assembly - Tuesday 12 October in the Callan Centre commencing at 9.45am AIC Track & Field Carnival - Wednesday 13 October with all Year 8-12 students attending Mary MacKillop Mass - Thursday 14 October in the Callan Centre from 11.00am Co-curricular Photos - Friday 15 October 2011 Orientation testing - Saturday 16 October Band of Brothers - Sunday 17 October on the back oval from 1.00pm to 6.00pm Student Free Day - Monday 18 October John Kennedy Memorial - Tuesday 19 October Celia Lashlie Lecture - Tuesday 26 October in the Callan Centre commencing at 7.00pm Ashes Luncheon - Saturday 20 November. Tickets available from the Main Office The Band of Brothers Concert has been well advertised already with tickets available form the College Office. This will be an outstanding event featuring great music, fine food and much more. The event is a ticketed event and therefore entry is by ticket only. Tickets are available by contacting the College Office on 36319000. The purpose of the concert is to allow the St. Patrick’s College community to enjoy a fun ‘Community’ day in light of what has been a challenging and difficult year for everyone. The event is not just for the St. Patrick’s College Community, so invite your friends. I encourage all members of the St. Patrick’s College Community to support this special event. Finally this week, I would like to give an update on the building program. You would see that the building is progressing well and starting to take shape. The recent rain has created some delays however, the builders are still confident that the project will be completed by the end of 2010 and therefore be ready for usage in 2011. Over the holiday period, the toilet block was demolished and work has commenced on the three new toilet blocks. This work will cause some disruption to movement around the College, however, it is minimal. At this point in time all work will be completed by the end of 2010 and be operational for the 2011 school year. I hope Term 4 is a successful one for all within the St. Patrick’s College Community. Welcome back to Term 4. I hope everyone had a relaxing break and used the time to spend with family and friends. 2011 5, 6, 7 and 8 ORIENTATION EVENING will be held next Monday evening 11 October. This is the first official function for over 160 families new to St Patrick’s and hence a very important occasion in our College calendar. All current Year 11 students are invited to attend to assist with the orientation of the younger students. Current Year 6 and 7 students are NOT required to attend the evening. Leadership 2011 – The Process of Leadership selection for 2011 has commenced. Staff and students are in the process of nominating and selecting the College leaders this week. The process for the selection of House Leaders will occur over the next few weeks. All Year 11 students will attend a compulsory Leadership Retreat from Monday, 25 October, to Tuesday, 26 October. On Wednesday 27 October the Year 11 students will spend the day with their

House Deans in a formation program that will see them plan for their role as leaders of their respective Houses. AIC Track and Field – Good luck to all our athletes who are competing in the AIC Track and Field events over the next week. All Year 8 to12 students are travelling to QSAC next Wednesday to support our athletes. It is expected that all Year 8 -12 students will attend school in full College uniform next Wednesday and positively support our athletes. Students will be transported to QSAC by bus and will return by 3.00pm. Food is expensive at QSAC so I encourage students to bring their own food and drink. School hats will also be beneficial for the morning sun at the stadium. This is a special events day and any student absent will require to present a Medical Certificate. Year 5 Camp: Year 5 students attended camp this week at Mudjimba. They all had a great time and fully participated in the activities on offer. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the staff who

attended and spent time away from their own families to provide this wonderful experience for the boys. Thanks to Mr Reid, Mr Johns, Mr Kerr, Ms Harden, Mr Clark, Mr Corfield, Mrs Hey and Mr O’Grady. Year 11 Formation Program Term 4: Over the next few weeks all Yr 11 students will participate in a series of talks provided by Drug Arm, SEAT (Spinal Injuries Association) and the Queensland Police Services. The talks will hopefully create an awareness of the impact of Drugs and the risk factors associated with them, underage drinking and the associated violence that can occur and the legal complications that are associated with this type of behaviour.

Photo Day—Please refer to page 15 of the Calling with details on the Co-curricular photos on 15 October.

STUDIES

In welcoming everyone back for the final term of 2010, I would like to begin a process of information sharing regarding the College’s 1 to 1 laptop program which will commence in 2011. A significant amount of money was provided by the Federal Government to schools throughout Australia as a means of ensuring that All students had access to computers as part of their education. As I am sure everyone will agree, such access is an essential part of schooling in the twenty first century. This is supported by key educational documents, in particular work being carried out in the planning and writing of the Australian Curriculum which indicates that the incorporation of IT into all unit design is a non negotiable. Consequently the College has made two key curriculum decisions for 2011 and beyond. The first is the creation of a

position titled “Curriculum Leader-Blended Learning”. It will be the responsibility of this person to work with Heads of Department along with individual teachers to incorporate the use of Information Technology into teaching and learning at St. Patrick’s. This will not be so much a focus on teaching students how to use computers but rather to use technology as a means of developing the higher order thinking skills required for success in modern day schooling. The second initiative is the implementation of a 1 to 1 laptop program. As such, all students in years 7, 8 and 9 will receive, what is known as a ‘netbook’ computer in 2011. It is envisaged that this device would be brought to school each day and used by classes in a wide range of subjects. Many new units will be written to accommodate the inclusion and use of the computer.

A movement in this direction raises many questions, related to transport, security, functionality, maintenance etc. At present, there is a list of frequently asked questions, along with answers, on the College Webpage. Could I ask all parents and boys, especially those from Years 6, 7 and 8 to read and review this document. As well, we are currently compiling a manual with directions for parents and students regarding the day to day care and use of the equipment. This document will include information about the care and responsibilities associated with having the equipment. As soon as it is completed, this document will be added to the College Webpage. I will use this column to provide further information throughout the term.

Mark Ellison Stand Up to Poverty Welcome back everyone to Term 4. I’d like to start by saying a very big thank you to all the students, staff and parents who took part in reading the Stand Up to Poverty pledge at our end of term liturgy last term. Our community was one of more than 1900 (from 74 countries) who took part in this global event, sending a very strong message to world leaders meeting to discuss the progress of the 2000 Millennium Development Goals last weekend. A huge thank you in particular to the staff and students who shared some of their personal experiences of poverty. Sharing story is one of the fundamental components of personal and spiritual formation, and during this liturgy we were incredibly privileged to hear Caden Samuels talking about the extreme poverty he experienced in India last year; Jordan Sheterline talking about the power of forming relationships with the people of East Timor; Paul Corfield talking about AIDs sufferers he met in South Africa; Marthy Watson telling us about the pain of losing her newborn daughter and the millions of parents who suffer the same pain each year; Mrs Hafiza Azami sharing some of her experiences of life as a woman in Afghanistan; and Mathew Makot poignantly describing his life as a child soldier in Sudan. These incredibly moving stories greatly reinforced our determination to end extreme poverty. Thank you to all involved. Face to Faith Last term I wrote about an exciting opportunity for some of our Year 11 students to participate in a videoconference with students from a school in India as part of the Face to Faith program. This videoconference took place

in the final week of Term 3 and exceeded all expectations. To give an idea of the magnitude of the Face to Faith program, our students here in Brisbane spoke live to students in New Delhi, while an IT technician in California made sure the connection and IT component stayed up and running, and a coordinator in London facilitated the discussion between students. While we expected the videoconference to be a good experience, none of us realised just how fantastic an experience it would turn out to be. In the words of the facilitator: I would like to reiterate the point that I made to the students at the end – this was a fantastic VC! All the students who took part were incredibly impressive; everyone who participated spoke eloquently and with great passion about the ideas discussed. It was clear that everyone was engaging with some quite difficult issues with great respect, and best of all, there was almost nothing for me to do (other than a little clarification); the impetus and direction of the VC came entirely from the students themselves. The students were incredible ambassadors for their cultures and schools – and I am sure that you are incredibly proud of them. In less than one hour we all learnt so much on so many different levels. The students involved are extremely keen to be involved in another videoconference and we look forward to being able to share this opportunity with a greater number of students in the near future. 40 Hour Famine Also last term, for the third year in a row over 100 staff and students took part in the 40 hour famine, to raise funds and awareness for people affected by the Global Food Crisis. For the third year in a row we raised more than $2000 which

will go a very long way to helping the poorest of the poor. A big congratulations to Sean Grant in Year 8 who raised more than $450 for the second year in a row. Just as importantly as the money raised, the students involved were able to experience in a small way what life is like without the bare necessities of life. These students are now better placed to take further action to help the poor. A huge thank you and congratulations to you all. Munnar Justice and Peace Grants Finally, we were recently successful in applying for two Munnar Justice and Peace grants from Edmund Rice Education Australia. The first grant will enable us to further develop the Paddies Garden in which our Year 5 students grow vegetables for the Paddies Van, and the second will enhance our reconciliation garden (Wooba) as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan, to further promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. These initiatives will be valuable additions to our community and its role in making the world a better place. St John Fisher Towards the end of last term a number of girls from St John Fisher College have got involved in the Paddies van with a group of girls coming along to a couple of the Saturday night barbeques and another group making some beautiful food packages of sandwiches, muffins, sausage rolls and fruit for us to take in to the patrons in the city on Thursday nights. We greatly appreciate the involvement of St John Fisher and look forward to continuing to work together to help the less fortunate in the local area.

COLLEGE DEAN

Welcome back to another new term. Hopefully everyone had an enjoyable and restful holiday, amongst all the wet weather. I had a great time in ‘sunny’ Melbourne soaking up all the footy finals fever, and then time in Geelong watching the World Cycling Championships. I always enjoy watching champions at work and it was a delight to watch first hand Cadel Evans try to defend his World Champion title. Although he did not win the title again, Cadel showed enormous talent and effort in doing everything he could he give himself every possible opportunity to win. I admire champions who set themselves high goals and work very hard to attempt to achieve their goals. This term we celebrate many

accomplishments of our students. We want our students to be the best they can. I encourage parents to sit with their sons at the start of this last term and set clear goals and actions for them to work towards. It may be to get an A in a particular subject, it may be to get a C in a particular subject, it may be to do well enough to get an Academic medal or to simply do my best. Having goals and working hard towards them will develop champion qualities in our young men. Our new wave of SPC champions start their journey next Monday evening with our 2011 Orientation Evening. All Year 11 students have been asked to attend the evening to help welcome the new families to our community, and in

particular their new ‘Little Brother’. The Year 11 students are asked to be in full College uniform with blazers and ties, and attend from 6.00pm to 8.15pm. Our Celebration of Excellence Evening is on Friday 5 November. Please make this date an important occasion as we invite all families to attend the evening to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our community this year. The evening is not just for the award winners, but instead is designed for all families to be a part of the reflection and celebration of the 2010 year.

Welcome back to all Water Polo players. It was fantastic to see nearly our whole squad turn up for training on the first day back! Training will occur on Monday again next week, however due to many students’ commitments to the AIC Track and Field Carnival next week, the Wednesday 13th October training has been cancelled. Monday trainings will still run as normal:

First Round is against Padua College in week 3. Further details are still TBA. Boys must ensure they attend all meetings called so that information can be relayed. Uniform & Equipment Many of the boys placed an order this week for a Water Polo team t-shirt. These shirts will arrive shortly before our first game and will be able to be purchased for $15 from the uniform shop. Many boys are still training in PE shorts. While this is fine for training, boys need to make sure they have purchased either a pair of Speedos or skins style tight fitting swimwear. SPC Speedos can be purchased for $45 and skins for $70. While it is not compulsory, it is preferred that boys wear the College Swimwear. It is also recommended that boys wear a mouthguard for games.

Ken will also have a hand in writing the swimming program for our swim-mers and providing input on how to get the most out of each swimmer. Our annual start to the season BBQ will also be kicking off this coming Thursday (14/10) over both Junior and Sen-ior lunchtimes. It will be chance for all of us to focus on the big season ahead as well as have a sausage, can of drink and relax with our swimming mates. It would be great to see anyone intending on being involved in Swimming in 2010/2011 to be there. Swimming times for Term 4 starting Tuesday October 19 are as follows: TUESDAY (SANDGATE POOL): 6:15am – 7:30am WEDNESDAY (REDCLIFFE POOL): 6:15am – 7:30am THURSDAY (REDCLIFFE POOL): 3:45pm – 5:00pm There will be buses to take the boys to school after morning training and a bus take the boys to Thursday afternoon training at Redcliffe. ‘GROWING GORGEOUS BOYS INTO GOOD MEN.’

St Patrick’s College invites you to a talk by social commentator CELIA LASHLIE. Celia Lashlie, author of ‘He’ll Be Ok -Growing Gorgeous Young Boys Into Good Men’, will give a talk at St Patrick’s College on 26 October. With 15 years experience working in the prison services of New Zealand, Celia undertook the ‘GOOD MAN PRO-JECT’ with 25 boys schools throughout NZ- a project aimed at creating a working definition of what makes a good man in the 21st century. The result was a significant insight into the minds of teenage boys and what they are feeling in this period of their lives. Celia is an inspirational speaker and provides challenging suggestions and plenty of practical and reassuring ad-vice for parents. You will be left with much food for thought on how to help your sons along the road to becom-ing good men. All parents will find something valuable in this talk regardless of whether you have sons or not.

September Spring Holiday Happenings

These past holidays witnessed the passing of a former College Principal, Mr John James Kennedy. John was Principal of St. Patrick’s College from 1995 to 1999 and was the first lay Principal in nearly 200 years of Christian Brother’s Colleges. John who had battled bravely against cancer of the liver. Tim Webster and Jordan Sheterline represented Kennedy House. May he Rest In Peace. Spring holidays are often the last fling of youth as our Year 12s prepare for their final Secondary Term of Education. A consortium of Anthony Curcuruto, Brandon Marshall, Daniel Row, Lachlan Ryan, Oscar Ryan, Jordan Sullivan and Brodie Zeller discussed the College 2010 outlook that Term 4 was to be the culmination of all our secondary academic efforts and so these holidays were a great relief from the daily grind where all Year 12s were looking forward to the end. But yet, for some, greater challenges lay ahead: Daniel Row spent the first week of the holidays attending a Petty Officer training course at Enoggera Barracks, Brisbane which he passed and now Daniel holds rank of P.O. in Australian Navy Cadets. During the second week he travelled to Perth, courtesy of the Royal Australian Navy, where Daniel sailed on the 180ft tall ship “Lewin” for 7 days. On the last day he was privileged to be the Captain of the ship. Michael Wallace wrote a paper and won the position of Youth Ambassador for Health and Medical Research, Australia. Viewing far and exotic places were Conor McSween and Thymon Venter returning from their exchange in Vancouver, Canada, as were Chris Harris and Kirt Myers from Cincinnati, USA where they had a cultural and enjoyable experience with a view into a different way of life and enjoyed the possibility of lifelong friends; David and Jack Lehfeldt travelled to France to see the Eiffel Tower and England to witness the ‘Changing of the Guard”; Dipankar Simkhada returned to Nepal and marvelled at their majestic mountains; Jeremy & Nick Mackin had a tourist holiday in Thailand; Luke Guy visited Disney Land and Universal Studios in the USA; Justin Medhurst competed in computer games in China; Matthew Hall and family went to Vanuatu on a sea cruise; Alex McDonough visited Fiji; Mitchell Horrigan went skiing in Christchurch and Queenstown, NZ; Sam Nothard thrilled at bungy jumping at Queenstown, NZ; Mr Ray Celegato and family went skiing in NZ; Harry Duggan was on a cruise ship to Emerald Bay, Isle of Pines and Noumea; and Angus Lane farewelled his Danish billet of two months back to Naksov. Closer to home within Australia Brayden Geddes moved to Perth; Dr Michael Carroll, Messrs Dave Gardiner and Rob Morris travelled, separately, to Melbourne for different reasons; William Sked saw Uluru; Alexander and Laurence Graham wondered at their whale watching off Hervey Bay; Mr Ian Brown went to Newcastle to meet his new grandson; Jackson and Cooper Burgess relaxed on the Gold Coast with their cousins; Josh, Matthew and Lachlan Smith saw the musical ‘Wicked’ in Sydney; Stuart Horrocks relaxed on his five day trip aboard the South Passage from Hervey Bay to Mooloolaba; Tom Weis visited Adelaide; Stephen Wallace visited Roma, Carnarvon Gorge and Yeppoon; Luca Kortyka surfed at Byron Bay; Lachlan Payne enjoyed the P & O Liner, Pacific Dawn, cruise up and down the East Coast of Queensland; and James Easey was also on a cruise ship and snorkelled off the Great Barrier Reef; Sporting highlights included Giles Beveridge representing Queensland White as Centre at the National Rugby Union Championships held in Sydney where he assisted his team to second behind NSW; Adam Edgar training with the Queensland Football Squad; Matt Lydement played cricket for the Sandgate Redcliffe senior squad and their Lord Taverner team, helping the latter to defeat the previous Premiers; Patrick Squire joining the multitude at the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne; Elliott Schultz’s motorbike rides in the North Brisbane cup where he won Bronze in the 65cc event and came 5th in the 85cc event; Josh Munks joined his team, Albany Creek, to participate in the Gold Coast Football Tournament where the team came 2nd in their pool; the Burke Boys conducted a swimming clinic with Dad; Ben Lafferty relished the thrills of his Surf Life Saving Training Camp; Tom Newton and Lachlan Munro played in the AFL Grand Final for Zillmere Eagles; and Callum and Hamish Thompson participated in an Indoor Cricket Tournament at Strathpine. Harry Galvin represented Redcliffe Tennis at the State Age Tennis Championships in Rockhampton performing well and then did better in the Bundaberg Championships. Max Monaghan competed successfully in the Junior Masters Tennis Tournament at Coops; Deagon Tennis Championships witnessed some stupendous struggles involving a number of St Patrick’s students including Joseph Cross and Matthew Lynas. Jacob Cross, Jordan Desylva and Richard Harris bowed out at the semi-final stage, Matthew Travers and Alex Kallenbach won their doubles but joined Bede Jennings in falling at the final hurdle. Ben Seagrott won the Cadbury Award for the College Tennis Clinic of whom Glen de Waard, Jake Hollingsworth, Awtel and Fabian Power, Ben Hows, Ben Lowis, Jake Sexton and Daniel Seagrott were regular attendees while Craig James, Isiah Gran, Cameron Gurdler, James Sanders, Matthew Trotter, Ryan O’Dea, Dominic Phillips, Conor Hoelscher and Jayden Ayton passed through the clinic as well. Our prayerful support goes to these for a full recovery. The snow fields of Perisher Blue beckoned for the brave and bold where 55 students showing good behaviour & super skills and eight staff of Messrs Lee Dowling, Luke O’Grady, Justin Moro, Geoff Samuels, Troy Schultz, Kevin Van Der Weide, Mrs Judy Kelly and Ms Kate Spencer enjoyed five days of amazing skiing in perfect snow under blue skies. Minor awards were given to Sam Mego, Jack Nolan, Luke Reynolds and Wade Simpson. Spring weddings are proverbial. Russell McCracken attended his Uncle’s wedding in Caboolture and William Hayes walked Mum up the aisle for her marriage at Montville. Dream World is the popular place to take cousins and rellies. Eoghan & Caelum Leonard entertained their Victorian cousins through it; and their soccer breakup was enjoyed by Sam Allen, Jack Huxtable, Liam McGrann, Lachlan Righetti and Jack Vogler. While some relaxed others learnt to keep working. Joe Beer worked at Health World; Christopher McDonald put in his extra hours at Woolworths, Bracken Ridge; Sam Anderson worked hard at BCF as did Jock Power at Coffee Club and Tom Roberts at Coles. The holidays, for most, experienced rain, rest, and family time. But for some they were boring and these students were glad to be back at College. Enjoy Term Four!
