Mr Stephen Graham With Thanks...

Dear St. Pat’s Community

I have always believed that teaching is a noble profession. It is also a calling. I decided very early in primary school that that was what I wanted to do. Consequently I never had to puzzle over my future direction. It has been a privilege to spend my working life with young people.

During my time here at St. Pat’s I have always kept in mind three mottos.

The first is the Christian Brother’s motto “To Do and To Teach”. I have tried to offer my students a safe environment in which they could feel at ease and have the confidence to learn.

The second is the College motto “Fight the Good Fight”. You might not always win but at least you have fought the good fight.

And finally the Graham clan motto “Never Forget”. I will never forget the wonderful years I have had at St. Patrick’s.

I would like to thank,

The Brothers for their unfailing kindness and compassion,

The CLT for giving me space to do my work but being there when I needed help and guidance,

My House Dean for his thoughtfulness and humour,

Fellow Staff members for their friendship and collegiality,

The Support Staff for their cheerful assistance freely given,

The Parents for their backup and notes of support,

and the Students, for their cooperation, enthusiasm and sense of fun.

Finally my prayer for you is,

“May St. Patrick guard you wherever you go,

And guide you in whatever you do-

And may his loving protection be a blessing to you always.”

Thank you.

Stephen Graham

It’s Story Time!

Story time in our household is great in many ways. I know we’ve stumbled upon a “bestseller” when parallel themes become apparent – those for the kids and those for the adults (the big kids!). The story below struck me last night as I shifted from writing a speech about the Gospel values alive at St. Patrick’s and straight into our household story time. I left story time contemplating the blindness and short-sightedness of greed and how the wise and courageous act of one person can make a difference to others….everyone living happily ever after! The Highway Rat

The Highway Rat was a baddie. The Highway Rat was a beast. He took what he wanted and ate what he took. His life was one long feast….His teeth were sharp and yellow, his manners were rough and rude……And the Highway Rat went riding along the highway and stealing the travellers’ food. A rabbit came hopping along the road, then stopped with her paws in the air, for blocking her way was the Highway Rat who cried out, “Who goes there?” “Give me your pastries and puddings! Give me your chocolate and cake! For I am the Rat of the Highway and whatever I want I take.” “I have no cakes,” the rabbit replied I just have a bunch of clover.” The Highway Rat gave a scornful look but ordered, “Hand it over this clover is bound to be tasteless. This clover is dull as can be, but I am the Rat of the Highway, and this clover belongs to me!”

The Highway rat continues to steal nuts from the squirrel, leaves from the ants, milk from the cat, flies from the spider and once, the hay from his own horse! The story then goes on…..

The creatures who travelled the highway grew thinner and thinner and thinner, while the Highway Rat grew horribly fat from eating up everyone’s dinner. A duck came waddling down the road then stopped with a “How do you do?” “I see you have nothing” the Rat complained. “In that case, I’ll have to eat you! I doubt if you’re terribly juicy, most likely you’re tough as can be, but I am the Rat of the Highway and I fancy a duck for tea!” “Hang on,” quacked the duck, “for I have a sister with goodies you might prefer. I know that she’d love to meet you and I’m certain that you’d like her, for in her cave, her deep dark cave, right at the top of the hill, are biscuits and buns a-plenty and there you may eat your fill.”

The duck guides the rat to her sister’s cave….

At last they came to a lonely cave, and the duck began to quack. She quacked, “Good evening sister – sister – sister-“ And….sister, sister, sister…” a voice from the cave came back. “Do you have cakes and chocolates?” the highway robber cried. And, ”Chocolates! Chocolates! Chocolates…” the voice from the cave replied. “I’m coming to take them!” the Rat Thief yelled. His greedy eyes grew round. And, “Take them, take them, take them!” came back the welcome sound. The Highway Rat leapt off his horse. Into the cave he strode. The duck took hold of the horse’s reins and galloped down the road. Faster and ever faster, following all the bends, the plucky young duck went riding, galloping down the highway, back to her hungry friends.

The duck shared the food out to the highway friends, living happily ever after. And as for the Rat – he got thinner and greyer and spent the rest of his days sweeping floors of a cake shop floor!

We wish to especially remember those students who died while at St. Patrick’s College, as also past students, staff, Brothers, Fr Patrick O’Rourke, founder of our College, who died on 31 May 1961, aged 69, in the Mater Hospital, after some years of ill-health, 44 years a priest. He had been Parish Priest of Sandgate since May 1947. We remember Brothers Francis Daniel Coffey, founding Principal, 10th October, 1973; Patrick Theophane Morrissey, 2nd Principal, who died at 50 of a brain tumor, 11th April, 1977; Kevin Marcian Quane, 3rd Principal, 21st March 1994; Alan Jerome Mooney, 4th Principal, 19 September 1978; Leonard Patrick Warren, 17th

His 11th Birthday was on the 2nd November, 1961, but a brain tumor hemorrhaged nine days later and at the 11th hour on the 11th Day of the 11th Month at 11 Years of age Noel James passed away. Paul Draper died of leukemia on the 12th Day of the 12th Month aged 12 Years in 1962. Michael O’Sullivan was “the brains o f the 9A c lass” but suffered much, with frequent hospital stays, through Years 8 & 9. His heart gave way on Saturday 27th January, 1968, three days short of the academic year and a few months short of his 15th birthday. James McEwen, of happy nature and pleasant personality, enjoyed a snow skiing trip with the College but contracted pneumonia, swine flu, and died after a very brief illness on the 24th August 1973, one week after celebrating his 15th Birthday. Michael Thomas Ryan, an active young man despite his illness, died after a long struggle with leukemia soon after the academic year began on 28th February 1983 just two months short of his 13th Birthday. Head of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education

Homestay Program for Indigenous Students Last week all families would have received an email from Mr Charles Brauer, Acting AP Identity, regarding the Homestay program for Indigenous students from remote communities. I would like to take the opportunity to again highlight this very unique opportunity and encourage you to consider what it would be like for your family to take on one of these students. The students that we receive to the program come from a variety of Indigenous backgrounds and the way they adapt to life in Brisbane and at the College is reliant on the generosity and patience of the families that take them in. The opportunity and experiences they receive, both at school and in the home, can be particularly exciting for them, having not had the opportunity to become involved in such things that are a given for our students. The culture that students bring are more than just the traditional things that come to mind when thinking about Indigenous culture. The negotiation between your culture and the student’s culture is part of the experience of the homestay program and it comes not without difficulty. Whilst we are all alike in many ways, our cultures still teach us to act differently and think differently from one another. The way we act and the way we feel about things is quite different to the way another culture does. All current and past homestay families can attest to the simplest routines of daily life seeming so foreign to new students. Likewise, homestay students can too give examples of the strange habits of their host families. With an open mind, these difference are easily overcome and accepted, often with a great deal of humour. These are the experiences that stay with you. If you are of an open mind, willing to share, willing to learn, then having a Homestay student can be a very rewarding

experience. It is an extra body in the family to feed, to organise, to drop to school, to drop to sport, to wake up in the morning,

but there is the opportunity to build real relationships not just with the student, but with their family and community. If you

would like to find out more about the program, I encourage you to make contact with me or to discuss with current homestay

families. Please call 0487 319 046 or email [email protected]

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

YEAR 12 STUDENTS

For the first time, students’ QCS test results—graded A-E—will be released prior to senior certification in December. This is because the QCAA is committed to releasing results as early as possible and providing senior students with an incentive to ac-cess their learning account before certification. This year students can access their individual result from 9am on Tuesday 18 November via their learning account on the Stu-dent Connect website: www.studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au. Final Year 12 results and OPs and FPs will be available in student learning accounts from 9am on Saturday 20 December. Students’ QCS Test results will be confirmed on the Senior Statement they receive as part of their Senior Education Profile sent to them in December. A student’s individual QCS Test result does not determine their OP. Instead subject and school group results from the QCS Test are used as part of statistical scaling processes undertaken to calculate students’ OPs. Using group data enables the QCAA to make a fair and equitable comparison of the achievements of students in different schools studying different subject combina-tions. Student Connect website Students must know their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password to log in and check their QCS Test grade on the ‘Enrolment and Results’ page of their learning account on the Student Connect website. Students will be able to access their results more quickly if they have previously activated their learning account. Please see Mrs Nott in the Curriculum office if you do not have your LUI number. Year 12 final exams commence next week. A strong performance in these tests is essential for students looking to improve or maintain current levels of achievement. Considering the benefits of a strong OP, good results in all subjects, and completion of all certificate related competencies, the small sacrifice of giving up this last weekend to study is a minor imposition.

SHOWCASE 2014 This week has been especially special with our Cultural Awards Assembly lead by Mr Samuels. I was very proud to see all the boys who have excelled in Culture this year and especially our Musicians. On this note, we saw performances from both the String Ensemble lead by Miss Simmers as well as another appearance of Miguel Turla (Piano) who also entertained the masses at Showcase last week. A big congratulations to our Music Ensemble award winners. You have been recognised this year for your dedication and leadership! Great work! Also, my personal congratulations to our ‘Battle of the Bands’ winner, Pat Keating who takes out the title for the second year in a row.

We are very proud of Pat who has recently been notified of his successful application for a place in the Performance Music and

Songwriting Bachelor of Music program at JMC Academy in Southbank. We’ll look forward to witnessing Pat’s journey as he
