The Vine & The Fruit I wish that my message today was about how successful an urban gardener I am and that I’ve mastered the tending of my lemon and lime trees and that I no longer need to go to Woolies. and can then ultimately share with you my gardening tips. Rather, I’m miles from understanding horticulture but would like to share with you the “dots” I connected while attending this week’s Tuesday morning Mass. Fr. Liam continues to do a fantastic job of challenging students and staff with understanding Gospel readings. While listening to this week’s Gospel passage I was struck with the following verse:

“Every branch in me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” John 15: 2

It dawned on me that our College’s spiritual and retreat program does just this. Our program’s experiences challenges students, and sometimes staff, to discover our and other’s raw or “pruned” selves in the hope of establishing a deeper self-awareness and more fruitful (pardon the pun!) relationships with others. Furthermore, the difficulties and lows we encounter in life do the “pruning” for us. Perhaps, what doesn’t end our time here on earth does truly make us stronger. Our Year 7s undertake their retreat next week and I’ll be watching with this refreshed perspective in mind. Next week I hope to have one of our Year 7s share with you their experience and whether or not they were “pruned”! Your Chance to Serve Others: Our Renewed Service Program Our Paddies Van continues to be a beacon of service to our local community. It needs our continued support through volunteering our time in service of others. If you and your son would like to take up this opportunity please contact me via Mrs Helen Righetti in the Student Office on 3631 9014 or [email protected]. Below is an outline of our Service Program times and locations.

Today is World Food Day, celebrated around the world in honour of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, 1945. This year's theme is: "Family Farming: Feeding the world, caring for the earth." The ongoing problem of hunger in the world stands as a constant challenge to those who have plenty to eat. A shocking fact: One-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year - approximately 1.3 billion tons - is wasted or lost.

Bishops in Rome are currently meeting for the Extraordinary Synod on the Family from 4 – 19 October 2014. This is an original approach that involves and calls on people and entities in the Church and beyond to explore the challenges that face families in our society. Let us continue to pray for the success of this Extraordinary Synod

Orientation Evening – The Callan Centre was full Monday night with families here for the 2014 Orientation Evening. We welcomed 250 new students and families into the St. Patrick’s community. I would like to thank all the current parents who volunteered to help out on the night. The large number of parents helping at the door, at registration, cooking and serving created a wonderful introduction to St. Patrick’s for our new families. I would like to thank the following parents who assisted: Alison Cooney, Louise Olley, John Beasley, David Row, Russell Oakes, Mel Potter, Sue Grey and Patrice Wells. I was also very pleased to see over 170 of our current Year 11 students attend the night and begin their leadership role. Well done, gentlemen. A special thank you goes to the House Deans, Mrs Fowlie, Mrs Emanuelli, Mrs Winsen, Mrs Sked and Mrs Thompson for their tireless effort in making the evening run smoothly and with a very welcoming atmosphere. AIC Track and Field: “SPECIAL EVENT DAY” All students in Years 9 to 12 will travel to QSAC to support our athletes in the final carnival for the year on Wednesday 22 October. The boys will depart following AM Tutor Group and return at approximately 2.50pm. It is important that students apply sunscreen and bring plenty of water for the day. All students must be dressed in full formal uniform. Green and Gold Day Thursday, 30 October - Green and Gold Days are an opportunity for students not to wear their school uniform to school and to show their pride by wearing the College colours of green and gold. The day is not simply a free dress day. Students may wear:

Clothing that is predominately green and/or gold

Plain blue denim shorts or jeans—NO black denim

St. Patrick’s jerseys/ team T-shirts

Sandshoes

Any clothing with the St. Patrick’s logo Students must not wear:

Clothing that is not predominately green and/or gold

Thongs/pluggers/sandals

No black socks, black t-shirts, no black denim Normal hair and grooming guidelines apply. Students who have workshop classes on that day must bring their black leather school shoes for these classes. WHEN DOES FUN FLIP INTO ADDICTION? Gaming has come a long way since Space Invaders.

Unfortunately with that growth has come an addiction to

gaming in some young people. Catherine Gerhardt describes how

to spot the signs and what to do about it.

Gaming addiction is a relatively new phenomenon. Today

millions of homes around the globe are equipped with game

consoles and personal computers.

Gaming gets into our deepest motivational

drivers. As human beings we have a great

need to be social. Games allow us to connect with others and

give us the feeling of control over our own social

environment.

Signs that your child may be developing a gaming addiction

include:

the inability to control the use of games

finding it difficult to stop playing even if they want to

experiencing withdrawal symptoms – physical and

mood related changes such as bad temper, poor focus,

or feeling empty, frustrated or angry

exhibiting defensive behaviour when questioned

about use

making social and recreational sacrifices such as

cutting off real life friends and only having online

friends

secrecy and solitude – playing alone and even in

secret, sneaking it in when they can

lying about use – they tell you they spent one hour

playing when really it was two.

What does this mean for parents?

You can start to help your child by implementing some

simple steps:

Set time limits

Limit content

Keep gaming out of the bedroom

Gaming is a privilege, not a right

Video games are not a babysitter

Search for a therapist

There is some debate as to whether gaming addiction is a

diagnosable disorder, however the behaviour undeniably

exists. The combination of intentional programming by

designers and the predisposition some teens have to

addictive behaviour means this is a real issue that parents,

teachers, and friends should be aware of and may need to

take action towards.

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

Throughout this year a working party of Heads of Curriculum and Curriculum Leaders have met each week with a view to developing a curriculum and pedagogical framework for the College. Over the coming weeks I would like to outline what this actually means and how the development of such a framework impacts on the delivery of curriculum at St. Patrick’s. A school by its very nature will be guided by a variety of framing documents. The most visible document of this type is the Australian Curriculum. Much work has been done in recent years by educators in Australia to produce syllabus documents in big subjects which ensure that what is taught throughout the country is consistent. This continues to be a work in progress. At St. Patrick’s, Heads of Curriculum and Curriculum Leaders have spent the past three years writing new work programs and designing new units based on the Australian Curriculum. In terms of the content we are teaching, we are both up to date and innovative. A strong emphasis has been placed on students developing higher order thinking skills through engagement with tasks that require more complex thought processes including evaluation and creativity. The question our group has been considering is whether this is enough. How do we ensure that classwork is being taught consistently from teacher to teacher? If teachers are covering

the same content are they doing so in the same way? Can common techniques and strategies be identified from class to class? This is the objective of a pedagogical framework. We all know what we are required to teach. The Australian Curriculum sets this out for us. Now we have to ensure that no matter who the student or whoever the teacher, the content is disseminated in the same way. To assist us in doing this, the working party has been examining the work of Robert Marzano. Marzano’s research into the A rt and Sc ienc e o f Teaching has been extensive in recent years. The focus of this research is to create “High Reliability Schools”. Our reading and study of Marzano suggests that his work should be pivotal to the Curriculum Framework we create at St. Patrick’s. On Thursday and Friday the working party will spend two days with Dr Janelle Wills from the Marzano Institute. I will continue on next week providing feedback on both the Professional Development days with Dr Wills, along with more details regarding Marzano and his teachings.

We also wish our AIC Basketball players and Tennis players every success for this Saturday as they enter into Round 6 of their respective Basketball and Tennis season verse St Peter’s Lutheran College. Once again, we would encourage as many St. Patrick’s College students to come along and show their support to both our tennis and basketball players.
