Dear Members of the St. Patrick’s College Community As we approach the end of Week 4 of Term 4 it is worth noting that today was the final day of classes for our Year 12 students. On Monday the College community has the opportunity to gather and farewell our Year 12 students at the Year 12 Farewell Assembly. This Assembly will be held in the Callan Centre commencing at 8:45am and will conclude with the traditional guard of honour. Last Thursday night the College community gathered for the annual Showcase. My thanks go to all involved with Showcase. It was an outstanding success with over 3000 in attendance. While on the subject of thanks and congratulations, I acknowledge the award winners at the Cultural and Sports Awards Assembly on Tuesday. My thanks go to Mr Samuels and Mr Donatini respectively for their coordination of the cultural and sporting programs during 2013. Finally this week, I have included below a statement regarding the future of the newsagency, Shorncliffe News. Have a great week.

SHORNCLIFFE NEWSAGENCY CLOSURE Owners of the Shorncliffe Newsagency, Niel and Nita Patel, have confirmed that they are moving from their Pier Avenue location at

the end of November this year. Mr Patel said they had an opportunity to establish a new business in the soon to be completed Taigum

Village Shopping Centre near the corner of Rogan and Handford Roads, Taigum.

‘Nita and I are very sorry to be leaving Shorncliffe but this new opportunity was just too good to let pass. It gives us the rare chance to

be in a new suburban retail centre from Day One and we are excited about the challenges ahead, “ Mr Patel said.

Mr Patel said he had been in negotiations with the owner of the existing shop, St. Patrick’s College, and that they had been very

cooperative with his decision to relocate to his new business at Taigum.

The announcement will mean the closure of the existing shop on Pier Avenue and the redevelopment of the site into the College

grounds.

St. Patrick’s College Principal Dr Michael Carroll said the closure of the newsagency was a significant event for both the College and

the local community.

Details of the redevelopment are currently being finalised and once Council has approved them, the College will notify the local

community in advance of any works commencing over the College's summer holiday period.

Who is “they”? And what does “having life to the full” actually mean? I thought I knew the answer to this question….until Tuesday night of this week, when Chris, a Paddies Van regular, showed me otherwise. Let me explain… Tomorrow night, we will celebrate the achievements of many within our community at our annual Celebration of Excellence. The theme for the evening is the above short passage from John’s Gospel. During the evening, we will celebrate the “life” of St Patrick’s, and indeed, its “fullness of life”. And this certainly is appropriate. Our College is full of life, full of enthusiasm and fun. It is a community which comes alive when our students, staff and parents work together toward a common goal. And we will celebrate this tomorrow night, and I’m sure it will be a wonderful and proud night for St Patrick’s. But on Tuesday night of this week, I sat with Chris under the Turbot St bridge for about an hour and a half – I talked a little bit, but I mainly listened. I listened to a man whose life has been filled with more challenges than most of us will ever face, beginning with events he encountered when he was six years old, and that still impact his life today. He has conquered drugs and alcohol, he has studied, worked, and travelled around Australia looking for stability and a fair go. He has been dealt bad hand after bad hand. But on Tuesday night, not once did he complain. He is a man with faith, but he admitted he has questioned his faith in God many times, particularly at his lowest times. He has had no answer to this question of faith, and I didn’t pretend that I had one either. I just listened, as that was all I could do. I felt helpless, and I felt embarrassed that I was going home to my family and nice house, and he was going back to a storage facility where he is sleeping at the moment, and using the swimming pool showers around the corner to stay clean. My conversation with Chris disturbed me, perhaps more than any conversation I have had in my time volunteering on the Paddies Van. But perhaps being disturbed is not such a bad thing – maybe it’s the most important thing!

I can’t help but wonder – when Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”, was he talking about me, or about Chris? I guess and I hope he was talking about both of us. So why is my life more “full” than his? In the same part of John’s gospel, Jesus refers to himself as the “Good Shepherd” – he says he will call his sheep by name, lead them, and even lay down his life for his sheep. We know that Jesus did indeed eventually lay down his life for his sheep. However, this doesn’t mean that Jesus did all the hard work for us, and we’re off the hook! Nor does it mean we need to literally lay down our lives for others. But it does mean we have a responsibility to live our own lives to the full, and to help others do likewise. I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. There is no doubt in my mind that Jesus was referring to Chris when he said these words. But as we know, Jesus now has no hands but ours, no feet but ours, no voice and no ears but ours. So, it’s over to us. How do I help Chris achieve any semblance of a fullness of life? I’m not entirely sure. I know a steakburger alone won’t do it; I know listening to his story for an hour and half won’t do it either, but it’s a start. Somehow, after my conversation with Chris, my life feels less “full” than it did before. I feel less “ok” than I did before. How can I feel ok, when I know Chris isn’t? In other words, I think that my fullness of life is completely interwoven with Chris’ fullness of life. I think this is what Jesus may have been getting at – perhaps – but I’m no expert. More intelligent people than Matt Hawkins have grappled with this concept, including Aboriginal elder, Lilla Watson, when she said:

If you've come here to help me, you're wasting your time. But if you've come because your liberation is bound up

with mine, then let us work together.

Maybe this helps me work out what to do next – not pretend I have the answers for Chris, or for anyone else who may be struggling – but to pledge to work with Chris and others……so that perhaps not only they will have life to the full, but I might too.

Last Friday students in Year 10 enrolled in the Certificate 1 in Skills for Vocational Pathways, completed their white card induction course. The possession of a white card is compulso-ry for next year’s participants in our structured workplace learning program. As well as this, after much negotiating by our work placement officer, Ms Moody, we have been success-ful in obtaining an invitation for our students to attend a School Based Traineeship Information evening in an effort to obtain much sought after school based traineeships in the health sector. This is an excellent opportunity due to the extremely high level of applicants such invitations are minimised to a select number of candidates. For St Patrick’s College to receive this information means that our students are in a great position to obtain traineeships.

The evening is at the Redcliffe Hospital Education Centre. BEING A JUROR FOR A DAY QUT MOOTING SOCIETY CRIME CLUB FINAL

Last Friday I, along with four of my legal studies peers, Joseph Cross, Sean Macko, William Nolan and Hayden Piercy, ven-tured into the Queensland Supreme Court, Banco Court to participate as members of a jury in QUT’s Crime Club final court hearing. During the evening we were tasked with listen-ing objectively to the evidence provided by the Prosecution which was run by members of the Crime Club as well as the evidence provided by Defense Counsel expertly led by mem-bers of the Queensland Department of Prosecutions, with the prestigious Judge Shanahan determining the winner of the moot. It was a great learning experience for us as students, especially as we finish our journey at St Patrick’s and hope to study law at university next year. With a special thanks to Mr Mark Nolan for his support on the evening and to the QUT Mooting Society for inviting us, I would encourage any stu-dent in Year 10 or 11 to get involved in this event next year.

SHOWCASE – I would like to add my congratulations to everyone for such a marvellous evening last Friday. I really enjoyed and appreciated the various individual performances and the House Choirs. Mr. Geoff Samuels did an excellent job leading up to the evening and also in his professional coordination on the night. Many staff and students put in a large amount of time, emotion and energy over many weeks to put on such a spectacular event. The House Choir is placed on our calendar in October to be the culmination of our Inter-House competition. Well done to O’Rourke House winning this year’s event. It certainly was a great celebration of all the great aspects of our House system. Congratulations to our House Deans and their Staff for the time and effort they dedicated to this event and for leading a great program. GRADUATION DINNER The Year 12 Graduation Mass and Dinner will be held on Thursday, 18 November. We are asking present Year 11

parents and students to assist on the evening with the serving of food and drinks. Next year you will be the special guests and be waited upon. If you can assist during the evening please contact Mrs. Sandra Fowlie in the Student Office. HAIR We are at the end of Week 4 being half way through the term I ask that you check your son’s hair and if required, make the necessary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of next week. I remind all students that their hair needs to be combed in a style that is appropriate for school. We have spoken to a number of boys and have sent letters to parents of those boys who require to have their haircut earlier. The “shaggy” look is not part of the Hair and Grooming policy at St Patrick’s College. We are preparing our annual Remembrance Day display and this year we are very privileged to have some original WW1 photos donated by Dr Carroll from his family records for our display. We have decided to put together a display of St Patricks College community involvement in WW1. We are hoping to get information from you about any involvement your family members may have had in WW1 e.g rank, name, unit, town or area where the service occurred, battles your family member was involved in or photos from the time you could scan and email in to me for us to print out and display. If you have family members who served in the Great War, it is possible to get records from Trove about soldiers in WW1 . For instance I have found my grandfather’s departure date, the ship he travelled on and his unit details from Trove. If you would like us to trace a member of your family via Trove so we can add his or her record to our display or if you have paraphernalia we can photograph and display please consider adding these details to our collection. SHOWCASE 2013 Thursday night was a wonderful night of entertainment as over 1000 students took to the stage to battle for the House Choir Shield for 2013. Thanks to all who performed on the night and special thanks to the House Deans, assistant staff and senior students who put so much time, energy and creativity into preparing the performances. It was great to see so many staff and parents who offered to help with the organisation of the program, barbeques and canteen. It was great to have a team of Year 5 parents representing each House who formed our judging panel for the evening! Thanks for a job well done. Special mention should also be made of the Year 12 Technical Production students who did a terrific job planning, rigging and running the lighting, sound and video on the night which was a huge effort with spectacular results. Stage B provided a wonderful “Showcase” for many talented musicians, dancers and actors who provided great entertainment between the House Choir performances. In summary a great night and a fitting conclusion to the House Shield competition.

The above results are a true testament of what has been achieved under their guidance. 2013 has proven to be our most success year for AIC Tennis in aggregate results and our equally (4th in 2010) best aggregate result for AIC Basketball.

We also take this opportunity to thank the students, coaches and parents who actively participated and supported these Trimester 3 sport in 2013. Without their enthusiastic involvement and contribution St Patrick’s College Tennis and Basketball would not be growing in such success as it has in 2013. Our congratulations are also extended to our College’s 2013 AIC Golf Team who achieved an overall 3rd place at this week’s AIC Golf Championships. This too is our highest place gained in Golf by St Patrick’s College. Many thanks and appreciation is extended to Mr Chis Carlill for his organisation and Coordinator of SPC Golf in 2013. On Tuesday 29 October we recognised students who participated in Cross Country, Basketball, Tennis, Track & Field, Hockey and AFL at our Trimester 3 Sports Awards Assembly. It was a terrific morning of celebrating sporting recognition. Congratulations to all the award recipients on their achievements within their respective sports. Thank you to everyone involved in these sports as your contribution also had a positive impact on the success of your sport at St Patrick’s College.

Parents and Students, With the completion of all school sport for this year now is the perfect time to get into the gym and begin a structured program to work towards goals for 2014. A fortnight ago the SPC gym was visited by Damon Kelly from the Queensland Weightlifting Association (QWA). Damon is a Delhi Commonwealth Games gold medal winner for his weight class and has worked with a number of professional sporting teams during his coaching career. Damon in his capacity as a QWA Development Officer has agreed to continue coaching during senior lunch every second Friday (commencing 1 November).

These sessions are open to all athletes and a fantastic way to learn and develop movements that will help increase all sporting performance (speed, strength, power and coordination). A number of squads have commenced training in the gym this term to begin preparations for 2014. It is essential students in these squads attend scheduled training sessions when possible. Alternate training times can be organised of these squad sessions clash. A squad training timetable is included below for future reference; more squads/training times will be added as the year unfolds.

The AIC Tennis Season concluded with St Patrick’s College 2nd in Aggregate and the 3rd IV winning their Premier-ship. Without doubt this was due in large measure to the leadership of Glen de Waard and the Year 12s, our faithful parents who supported their sons at every training session and match, the players who were loyal to training days and gave their best on match days, and the consistency of good results that saw two Saturday whitewash against strong op-position. Thanks one and all.

Preparations for AIC Volleyball 2014 will begin next week with trials occurring Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at Boondall Entertainment Centre. Volleyball is a sport that is largely foreign and many students would have never played before. This shouldn’t affect you giving it a try. No previous experience is required. The SPC Volleyball program boasts several experienced and qualified coaches who will teach you the game and opportunities throughout the year to train and play. Please come along and trial, even if you were “only thinking about playing”. Get involved! In previous years students have caught the train straight after school from Shorncliffe station. I would encourage any new players trialing for the season 2013-2014 to do the same. There will be quite a number of boys doing so. If it is your first time, please see me and I will buddy you up with an experienced student. The train will get students to the Sports Centre for a 3.30pm start. The sessions will finish at 5.00pm. Students will need to arrange their own transport home. These sessions will run until the end of the 2013 school year with details of 2014 training handed out towards the end of term.

Finally, please wear St. Patrick’s College PE uniform or SPC Volleyball jersey to all sessions. A water bottle is also advisable.
