Indian Standard SPECIFICATION FOR CARROM-DRAUGHTS

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Insti- tution on 19 June 1967, after the draft finalized by the Sports Goods Sectional Committee had been approved by the Consumer Products Division Council.

0.2 This standard, dealing with the carrom-draughts, is one of a series of Indian Standards on sports goods and gymnastics equiPment prepared on the recommendations of the Sports Goods Export Promotion Council, New Delhi. given at P 8.

Other specifications published so far in the series are

0.3 This standard contains clauses which call for agreement between the purchaser and the supplier or which permit the purchaser to use his option for selection to suit his requirements. The relevant clauses are 4.1, 6.1 and 8.1.

0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance \vith IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard lays down the material, dimensional and construc- tional requirements of carrom-draughts.

2. MATERIAL

2.1 The draughts shall be manufactured from well-seasoned wood having moisture content not exceeding 14 percent. These shall be free

from centre heart decay, insect attack, sapwood and warping which are likely to affect their utility. The recommended species of timber are:

3. SHAPE, DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT

3.1 Typical shape of the carrom-draught is given in Fig. 1. These shall have the dimensions as shown in the figure.

3.1.1 The diameter of draught shall be from 31’8 to 33.8 mm and the weight 4.40 to 5.40 g.

4. MANUFACTURE

4.1 The carrom-draughts shall be manufactured to shape as shown in Fig. 1 or as agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier. As per the practice existing, these shall have two concentric circles in each face. A minimum of nine carrom-draughts shall be off-white, nine black and the one known as ‘queen’ shall be red. For obtaining off-white colour, if need be, the draughts may be bleached.

5. WORKMANSHIP AND FINISH

5.1 Each carrom-draught shall be finished smooth and shall be circular in shape without any protuding edges or uneven face. Also, the edge shall be round and smooth. In case of coloured carrom-draughts, the colour shall not come off by dry or wet rubbing.

6. PACKING

6.1 The earrom-draughts shall be packed in sets, nine white, nine black and one red. Each set shall contain extra draughts, at least one white and one black. The packing shall be as agreed to between the pur- chaser and the supplier.

7. MARKING

7.1 Each package of a set of carrom-draughts shall carry the manufac- turer’s name, identification or registered trade-mark.

7.1.1 The packages of carrom-draught sets may also be marked with the Standard Mark.

NOTE - The use of tbe Standard Mark is governed by tbe provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys tbe assurance tbat they have been produced to comply with tbe requirements of tbat standard under a well defined system of inspu3ion, testing and quality control wbicb is devised and supervised by BIS and oprxated by tbe producer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BIS for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details bf conditions under wbicb a license for the use of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from tbq Bureau of Indian Standards.

8. SAMPLING

8.1 Sampling and criteria for acceptance for carrom-draughts shall be as agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier. A recommended scheme for the same is given in Appendix A.

9. TEST

9.1 Each carrom-draught shall satisfy the test as given in 9.1.1.

9.1.1 When struck by a striker ( see IS : 4144-1967* ), each carrom- draught shall have smooth movement in a flat position on the surface of a standard carrom-board (see IS : 2719-1964t).

APPENDIX A

RECOMMENDED SAMPLING SCHEME AND CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY FOR CARROM-DRAUGHTS

A-l. LOT

A-l.1 In any consignment all the carrom-draught sets manufactured from the same species of timber shall be grouped together to constitute a lot.

A-1.1.1 Each lot shall be inspected separately to ascertain its con- formity to the requirements of this specification.

A-2. SELECTION OF SAMPLES

A-2.1 The number of draught sets to be selected at random for the sample shall depend upon the size of the lot and shall be in accordance with co1 1 and 2 of Table 1.

A-2.2 The sets in the sample shall be selected at random from the lot and in order to ensure the randomness of selection, random number tables shall be used. In case random number tables are not available, the procedure given in A-2.2.1 for selection may be adopted.

A-2.2.1 Starting from any set in the lot count them as 1, 2, 3 ,...... up to r and so on in one order, where r is the integral part of N/n (N being the lot size and n being the number of sets to be selected). Every rth set thus counted shall be withdrawn to give sample for test.

A-3. NUMBER OF TESTS AND CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY

A-3.1 Each carrom-draught set in the sample shall be inspected for material, dimensions, manufacture, workmanship andefinish and tested in accordance with 9.1.1, Any of the draughts in a set failing to meet any one or more of the requirements of this specification shall render the set as a whole to be classified as defective.

A-3.2 The lot shall be declared as conforming to the requirements of this specification if the number of defective sets as observed in A-3.1 does not exceed the permissible number of defectives given in co1 3 of Table 1.
