IRIS POWER PDTrac SYSTEM

The Iris Power PDTrac systemconsists of three permanentlyinstalled capacitive couplers, an IrisPower PDTrac instrument, plusdigital communication. The IrisPower PDTrac system is aneconomical means of providingautomated, continuous partialdischarge (PD) measurement formotors, generators, switchgear,and dry type transformers.

The Iris Power PDTrac continuouson-line instrument providesmaintenance professionals with anopportunity to automate PDtesting. The Iris Power PDTracinstrument also allows for thepossibility of integrating importantoperating conditions needed fortrending PD activity, and willtrigger a remote alarm, indicatingthe need for a more detailedanalysis. The instrument uses thesame capacitive sensors that havebeen permanently installed onmotors, generators, and switchgear(3.3kV and higher) over the last 20 years by most utilities and otherindustries around the world.

The Iris Power PDTrac instrumentincludes our unique and rigorouslyresearched methods to overcomethe electrical interference (noise)typical in most plant environments.This ensures reliable andrepeatable measurements with alow probability of false alarms. Thecollected data can be easilyinterpreted by maintenanceprofessionals after participating in a2-day training seminar offered byQualitrol-Iris Power’s experiencedengineering staff. The user’s

assessment of motor and generatorinsulation systems using on-line PDtesting is greatly enhanced byaccess to Iris Power’s extensive PDdatabase of over 140,000 testresults. The collective experienceand results of our clients areregularly summarized in statisticaltables, available to all users. This isa service unique to Qualitrol-Iris Power and its clients andensures objective interpretation of insulation condition.

Facilities that have existing “single-ended” bus coupler installationscan easily install the Iris PowerPDTrac instrument by connecting itto the existing sensor terminationpanel within the plant. This doesnot require an outage and theinstallation effort is limited toproviding power to the monitor,wiring the alarm and/or sensor withnetworking option, and running acommunication link to a localcontrol room computer or anEthernet LAN/WAN.

Machines not previously equippedwith Iris Power capacitive couplersmust have the PD sensors installedduring a suitable outage.

The Iris Power PDTrac instrumentcontinuously collects PD data andarchives the pulse height (2D) andsummary numbers (Qm and NQN),which are used for trending andcomparison with similar machines.Using the Windows™-basedsoftware, the archived PD data canbe downloaded locally over a USB

• The Iris Power PDTrac instrument contains superior noise separationtechnology based on filtering and pulse shape analysis, reliablydistinguishing partial discharges from electrical interference (noise) inorder to prevent false indications (alarms).

• Data collected by the Iris Power PDTrac instrument is compatible withthe existing patented TGA/PDA technology. Users with existingsensor installations can commission the system without a machineoutage. Data is easily confirmed and further analyzed with the Iris Power TGA-B™ or Iris Power PDA-IV™ portable instruments.

• The Iris Power PDTrac instrument performs continuous PDmeasurements with advanced alarm features, allowing minimalintervention by maintenance personnel. In response to an alarm, userscan review the pulse height (2D) data using basic interpretation toconfirm the cause of the alarm. Alarm levels are preset based on theIris Power database of over 140,000 test results.

• Alarm Output is a dedicated relay fitted within the monitor enclosure.The relay has a solid state latching contact that can activate a remoteindicator, which must be reset by the user. The alarm conditions areconfigurable through the operating software. The alarm output maybe connected to a plant operating system.

• The Iris Power PDTrac instrument is equipped with sensor inputmodules to enhance data gathering for trending and analysis.Available inputs include stator winding temperature, voltage, currentor power plus ambient temperature and ambient humidity – all ofwhich impact PD readings.

• USB memory stick port for downloading stored data without a laptopcomputer.

• Qualitrol-Iris Power has extensive experience with continuous on-linePD monitoring. Over 1,500 continuous monitors have been installed.

• Remote modes of communication allow diagnostics, control andconfiguration from a distance.

• Certified for use in hazardous locations.

• Analog Output Module - Iris Power PDTrac instrument has the abilityto output anywhere from 1 to 8 analog signals proportional to thelevel of PD activity (Qm and/or NQN). This is applicable in situationswhere the user is interested in having the real-time PD activityacquired by their DCS or operating system.

• Networking option – this option adds a RS485 and Ethernet port forremote downloading to a controlling computer using Iris PowerPDTracProTM software.

WHAT IS PARTIALDISCHARGE?

Partial discharges (PD) are smallelectrical sparks that occur withinthe high voltage electricalinsulation in stator windings. PDoccurs whenever there are smallair gaps or voids in or on thesurface of the insulation.Normally, well-made statorwindings that are in goodcondition display very little PDactivity. However, over 60 years’experience has shown that as astator winding deteriorates fromwinding vibration, operation athigh temperatures, orcontamination from oil, moistureand other chemicals, the PDactivity will increase by a factorof ten or more. Thus, on-line PDmonitoring detects the main rootcauses of stator winding failure.Since PD monitoring can beperformed during normal motoror generator operation, andgenerally gives two or moreyears of warning indicating a riskof failure, on-line PD monitoringhas become a very powerful toolfor predictive maintenance.
